Unfortunately there's no footage of this but in 1976, Tim McCarver of the Phillies his what appeared to be a grand slam but 1st base runner Garry Maddox had gone to tag up in case the ball was caught but McCarver was so excited that he hit a grand slam that he passed Maddox on the base path. This meant McCarver was out so the homerun was nullified, however, the 3 runs were allowed to score and since McCarver had touched 1st base he was credited with a single so he's the only player in history to have hit a grand slam single.

I wish sports announcers would learn the difference between interference and obstruction.

Interference is if the runners block the ball, and obstruction if the fielders block the runners?

Good video but I would like more replays if available. I was pondering what was happening in the last clip still while the next play was happening and missed it.

for 0:37 Dee Gordon (batter looking) claims: "I wanted to see if he [Michael Pineada, the Yankees pitcher] could throw the strike. I didn't think he would, and he did. That's part of it."

Those are literally synonyms.
@ryanaltfillisch71553 жыл бұрын
@@ReidTheRulesGuy They mean different things in regards to baseball rules. Obstruction is when a defender impedes the progress of a runner. Interference is generally when a runner/batter impedes the ability of a defender to make a play on the ball (there are a couple of defensive interferences as well, but most of the time it's by the offense).
@ronwatson40433 жыл бұрын
@@ReidTheRulesGuy Also, obstruction is a delayed dead ball while interference is an immediate dead ball.
@almostfm3 жыл бұрын
@@ronwatson4043 _Usually_ it's a delayed dead ball. In this case, because it happened before the batter-runner reached first, it's a "Type 1" (also called "Type A") obstruction. When that happens, it's an immediate dead ball, the batter-runner is awarded first, and the other runners are awarded whatever base they would have reached, in the umpire's judgement, if the obstruction had not occurred. So basically, none of the stuff that happened after the obstruction counts.

1:16 can someone explain what’s going on?
@peteymcthompson3 жыл бұрын
Morse's hit bounced off the top of the wall and into the outfield. Morse rounded 1st then got hung up between bases and was tagged out coming back to 1st so he went to the dugout. The play was reviewed as a homerun (grand slam even!) but he still had to run the bases. I think he just did the little swing for fun though.
