I turned down an interview with an mlm and in the reply email I was scolded for not being open minded enough and how I’m missing out on such a great opportunity because I’m not open to all the greatness they offer. It was such an incredibly condescending email it only made me feel even more justified in turning them down. I just hate how they almost weaponize open mindedness. If you don’t like them it’s just because you aren’t open enough (according to them that is).

Just to let y'all know (in case ya didn't): China, the country where Tencent/TikTok is based from, has pretty harsh laws in place to prevent multilevel marketing schemes. Like, even in the most basic format, MLMs can violate Chinese laws. So if anything, THAT is probably why TikTok banned those kinds of scams and schemes from their platform altogether. Not to protect the youth, but to adhere to Chinese laws. (You'll see a lot of China-based companies doing seemingly weird things or instating weird rules; companies in China really do have to bow down to the Chinese government if they don't wanna get ripped to shreds by the CCP.)

I find the biggest red flag for any product is when they say "don't say the name of the company". My first experience with an MLM was someone trying to recruit for Beachbody. I thought it was her own "business" as that is the marketing tool. After talking I found out that was not true. (Also selling shakes was an even bigger red flag). I refused to sign up till she gave me the name of the company she worked for. I researched it that night and found out it was basically a scam. I just find this practice so shady and predatory when they give advice like "don't say the company name"..

I'm extremely cynical and live by the philosophy of "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is." If that means walking away from a good deal, so be it. I would rather lose out on one good deal then get taken in by ten cons/tricks/barely legal mechanization. Not to mention my personal morals wouldn't allow me to intentionally screw someone over. How quickly would MLMs die if we could get a law saying a company legally cannot require an employee to purchase their own products in any capacity, nor require that a prospective employee be a customer before they can be hired? Also put a restriction on hiring incentives so that you cannot gain additional cash or whatever from your referral's performance or continued employment (or at least put a cap on that, as I can understand a company wanting new hires to last at least a year). Pipe dream I know, but still, I imagine they'd die very quickly if we could somehow make such into law in a way that would survive the supreme court (cause you know they'd take it all the way).

Had a buddy invite me to some talk at his house about a telephone company and I said it sounded like a pyramid scheme - he insisted it wasn't. The guy who spoke had a title slide on his easeled presentation, but the VERY NEXT SLIDE was LITERALLY a pyramid. I found out that the company had been sued by several countries, including the speaker himself. I told another buddy of ours who was there and was yelled at for not letting him make his own decision. That same guy is now doing everything he can to ruin his ex-wife, who he had living in a barely livable trailer while he built his off-grid compound. Really horrible shit.

I've got a cousin who has been involved in so many MLM's that I've lost count. The last one she did was a few years ago. I still don't know which one it was because she wouldn't show or say the name of it in her post. I saw the pic with all the containers turned with the label away from the camera and the block of text with the post that was just vaguely going on about how incredible these products were (of course there were plenty of emoji's sprinkled around)... knew right away that I wanted no part in it.
