Rachel Maddow of MSNBC featured a couple of segments about this company on her show a few weeks back. The network purchased some of this dirt and sent samples to soil testing labs through accredited universities throughout the US. The results? Not surprising, when you consider the bog from which this peat is harvested shares a border with a TOXIC WASTE DUMP SITE. The dirt had heavy metals, known carcinogens, off-the-scale levels of viruses and bacteria and even detectable levels of radiation. So, yeah, go ahead, folks. Get good health by consuming dirt from a site worse than Love Canal, NY. OMFG.

What? No oxygen is not the cause of oxidative stress. If you truly knew anything about science you would know that it is caused by new radicals circulating in your body. The causation is certainly multifactorial; and clearly the practice of earth-eating has existed since the first medical texts were written. The descriptions do not allow simple categorization as a psychiatric disease. Finally, geophagia is not confined to a particular cultural environment and is observed in the absence of hunger. 100% agree. I have RA, as well, and as soon as I was diagnosed, people came out of the woodwork to tell me what to do instead of going to a Rheumy and getting on meds. People getting really personal about my choices and how the "chemotherapy drugs" the doctors were going to put me on were going to ruin me. Meanwhile, I literally could not get dressed in anything that required buttoning buttons, pulling up zippers, or lacing shoes. I couldn't turn a doorknob. And, to be perfectly frank, it was hard for me to go to the toilet by myself. I was terrified that my life as an independent human being was over at what should have been the peak of my life. And I'm savvy; I have an advanced degree in biology, I can actually read and understand the research--but these so-called "helpful people" had me in such a state of anxiety. I cannot imagine what it must be like for people who don't have the ability, time, resources, whatever, to read and understand what the literature says to cope with these not-so-helpful people. Anyway, now I'm on the "chemotherapy drugs" and (for what anecdotal evidence is worth) rather than ruining me, I can get dressed, open doors, and go to the loo all by myself again. @@Bringon-dw8dx It's weird, because at a discount drug store you can get 90 multi vitamin tablets for $15 and the generic grocery stores sell the same 90 tablets for just under $4, vitamin C for $3. Reason for the price difference: people feel that more expensive = better. It doesn't even matter if they know that the ratios and amounts are the exact same and according to multiple studies they're equal in every aspect except for the packaging and pricing. So they do their groceries, ignore the vitamins, and then go to a different store to specifically pay ~4 times as much for the same thing so it has a bigger placebo effect, knowing that that is the only difference, and knowing they're encouraging useless placebos that inflates prices, ignoring that that makes life harder for people who have less income and making it socially acceptable that money buys better placebos when the best placebos are for free: friends, having fun, sex, taking a walk(or lie in a bed on wheels and have someone push you down the street for all I care), talking to an understanding professional. All of those things have all kinds of side effects you can actually measure and are great. It's like drinking water when you're thirsty from eating something salty and then thinking it tastes better than ever and having the pleasant side effect of not dying of dehydration or bleeding to death as a result of high blood pressure. It's amazing! Other people are like, when I need comfort I pray to a god. Well, that sound fucking lonely and pathetic to me, offence intended and I'll gladly come kick you when you're down to teach you to rely on more effective placebos that have actual benefits you can fucking confirm to exist that will also make it kind of impossible for me to have any effect when I try to kick you when you're down because you won't give a fuck because you know you can rely on real existing things that will always be there even when you're out of the running. Perhaps some fiddling with the intensity of the lamp or how near it sits to you might help. Keep up the great work ♥ Edit - As for the bog dirt, it just feels pretty insane to me, but the thing that is kind of the most on point was the way that person/rep at the end made fun of those falling for other kind of nonsense. It reminded me of Jim Jefferies' short skeet from his tv show where he confronts conspiracy theorists of different kind and it becomes hilarious when they start scoffing at each other when one or the other exposes a type of nonsense they don't agree with. Highly recommended if you haven't watched it

I have the same autoimmune issue your mom has, and I get so many bullshit "cure" ideas from people all the time. Like, I see a doctor for a reason. This whole, "I read a blog and now I'm an expert!" mentality is really frustrating to deal with. Love your videos as usual and I really hope your mom finds some relief. It can be really rough some days.

The frustrating thing with "see you doctor, don't go behind their back" at least in the US, is that 20% don't have doctors. and 40% haven't seen their doctor in the last 12 months. All because they can't afford it, or there just aren't enough. A lot of the MLM health&wellness prevalence in the US feels like it's because there isn't socialized medicine / ease of medical professional access.

If I were a billionaire with an incredible grudge against MLMs, I'd start a company that explicitly makes generic knock-offs of all this expensive wellness crap and sells them at a loss. Well, the ones that aren't harmful, at least.

One of the new episodes of Leverage has a villan clearly inspired by real life MLM celebrities. The villan is well done showing how exploitative, manipulative, and opertunistic such celebrities are. I was excited to see such a villan in a popular series as I hope it spreads awareness about such evil tomfoolery.

Edit: thank you for the videos!!! I very much enjoy your content, the comment below is just a little added context for the weird arthritis post. Generational curses and referring to the Devil as the enemy is a hallmark of american Christian fundamentalist patterns of speech. Another custom of american Christian fundamentalism? The laying on of hands [basically believing certain members of a congregation have the "gift" of healing and can heal people of anything and everything simply by putting their hands on someone]. Not exactly the same as believing in Dirt but it's a belief reinforced by American Christian Fundamentalist ideology.

Sorry for the long random comment, I just grew up in a very fundie area (Texas) and I am unfortunately *very* familiar with how they talk. Alot of american fundies are deeeeeeeeep into MLM because it reinforces or aligns with a ton of fundie specific doctrine. So. I thought I'd add that bit of context (>_

Most of the materials u supposably getting from Boo/ eating dirt u can get from a balance diet and supplements. I have an allergy to sunlight one top of arthritis. Instead of taking Boo I went to my doctor who told me to take a supplement since I can't get out in the sun as well as try to get more exercise to help my arthritis since moving around helps arthritis

I lost an aunt many years ago to heavy metal poisoning. She had been treated very aggressively for arthritis with medicine containing gold salts. This didn’t cure her debilitating arthritis but it did result in poisoning from the gold. She was deathly ill for about six months before the gold finally killed her and the treatments were really painful and made her bedridden.

Heya Emma!!! I usually don't comment, but things like this make my blood boil... I am disabled due to chronic illness/pain... I not only understand the desperation, but I've been there, MANY times... And one of those times I went to a health foods store, wanting anything they could give me to help... Because my thyroid was suspected, they gave me iodine "cures" for it... I actually didn't have the time to fully research it before my doc got back to me so I didn't end up taking it & it's a damn good thing I didn't... The condition they found was Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, which is an autoimmune condition & patients with this diagnosis are NOT deficient in iodine, so taking it can POISON us!!! Anywho, just to say I've been burned by supposed panaceas in the past & on my most painful days I still feel like I could easily fall prey to anyone who says, "Just take this, it cures everything"... So these types of MLMs target ME & people JUST LIKE ME, like your mum... They take advantage of us... And with every bit of the "advantages" you were reading, alarm bells were going off in my head & things were just making me angrier... "The most powerful electrolyte"?? Electrolytes aren't ranked by power tho?? Like, you need all of them, in different amounts, so one isn't "more powerful" than the next... "Delivers usable oxygen to cells"?? You know what delivers usable oxygen to the cells??? Blood... Do--do they think that your body is currently delivering UNUSABLE oxygen to cells??? Just every bit got me more & more mad... UGH!!! But THANK YOU for making videos like this & your other MLM videos, because people can learn how predatory these companies are & how they literally do NOT care about helping those of us in need... You're amazing, keep doing what you do because it makes such a great difference in our world!!! 🖤🖤🖤 ~Casey

Having had several instances of heavy metal poisoning I can confirm that there are medical substances they use called chelators and what they do is bind with the heavy metals to help the body pass them. I have experienced mercury poisoning and lead poisoning and I would never go with a non proven, non medical chelator for that purpose. If you are having neurological dysfunction that feels unnatural to your usual baseline interactions, please consult a doctor. Heavy metal poisoning is no joke. Also be aware that teflon poisoning is extremely common so if you use teflon coated cook ware and things and notice anything is off, please please see a doctor. It's something you may not even know you have and it is so easy to get it. I got it from using an internal element kettle and the teflon was flaking off in micro particles into the water. Also please don't buy bog dirt to eat. It's really filthy. There is no transparency with these companies and you never know if there is any process to it. A lot of bugs and parasites can live in dirt. A lot of diseases can live in dirt and bogs are famous for their preservation qualities for a reason and those qualities are really bad for human digestive things.

Years ago, I watched an engineer debunk an energy saving device. This device was claimed to massively reduce your electricity bills if you just plug it in. It didn’t really work for home use, but he noted that people who used it would probably be in a frame of mind to look at ways of reducing their electricity usage (switching stuff off etc) so it might appear the devices work. I think this could be the same thing, People will buy this dirt hoping to feel better. Because they want to feel better, they might look at ways they can improve their own health. If they find some, they may think the dirt worked.

Hi Emma! Love your videos, as a science nerd just out of college trying to dodge dodgy jobs, it gives me a chance to laugh. I did want to point something out about your use of the term nutritionists. As someone with a family member with serious, long-term dietary issues whos life was truly changed by a proper (medically trained and certified) professional in the field. Because there are so many fake, unaccredited 'nutritionists' in these MLMS, it gets lost in the shuffle that it is a real medical specialty with real, specific qualifications, and they can provide invaluable specialist care to those who are struggling with serious health concerns (such as EDs and issues with nutrient absorption etc..) It can cause some problems to direct people to GP-type doctors with dietary concerns, as opposed to real, qualified nutritionists as doctors only need 1 credit of nutritional training to graduate med school(At least over here in the US, not sure about the UK). So while an individual doctor will give you advice that is medically sound, your GP may not actually know much about nutrition-specific issues I 100% agree to follow overall medical consensus, and that anyone calling themselves a nutritionist on the internet should be seriously vetted, but I also feel to make a distinction between the medical professionals who do really important work (esp for folks with ED or serious dietary needs) and the fake nutritionists working for MLMs.
