Thank you for nailing the gluten (and dairy) thing. I am a biopsy-diagnosed celiac… I think it’s been 11 years since diagnosis this summer. It kills me when people remove it for no discernible reason. Or worse, when they claim you can lose weight by doing so, etc. Let’s not pretend that gluten free foods aren’t higher in fat and calories, and lower in protein than their gluten counterparts. If you are avoiding processed food (where much of gluten resides) and are moving more, you probably will lose weight, but it has nothing to do with the gluten itself. I would literally die if I continued eating it (very slowly and painfully over years - celiac is not an allergy/anaphylaxis, it’s an autoimmune disorder). So it makes me very sad when people fall into these diet traps. I would love to be able to eat good cakes, donuts and bread again. No one should be depriving themselves of those yummies unless medically necessary! If you feel better not eating it, that’s great. Don’t eat it! I totally support that. If it’s not making you sick, don’t deprive yourself of it. I have to add my friend,y reminder that if you are looking to be tested for celiac, it’s even more important that you DON’T stop eating it until you have been tested/diagnosed. That sounds a little crazy if you are very ill, but it’s important for accurate blood and biopsy results. Gluten is not evil in and of itself. You can have a very healthy, low calorie diet that includes delicious gluten.

One of the saddest things about these videos demonizing "9-5"s is that if these women would put HALF the work into some kind of entrepreneurial pursuit, they would make so much more money. The choices are not "9-5 or MLM." When I moved to my current city a dozen years ago I had no job. I went to Walmart and bought cleaning supplies, ordered $20 business cards on Vistaprint, and started cleaning houses. Within one year, I was booked 6 days a week and I was constantly turning down new customers. And every MINUTE I was working, I was PAID. I have not collected a paycheck from anyone else since then. Cleaning houses doesn't take any special skills, other than just physically being able to do the work. There are hundreds of pursuits that these young, healthy gals could be doing and making tangible money. Hell, a lot of them are gorgeous and could take a real stab at being "influencers" (like you, I hate that word!) or bloggers. Anyway I'm rambling now

i know you're not currently in early-education, hannah, but i couldn't help but think as you were discussing the beachbody "coach" that it would've been so powerful for me to have a teacher like you as a little girl. i had body-positive teachers as a teen/young adult, but by that point i had been fatshamed and food-shamed for so long that my eating disorders were a forgone conclusion. the only teachers that ever discussed food with me as a child were ones who tried to identify with me as fellow fat people, but they assumed that our collective goal was to diet and lose weight. this mentality was (and continues to be) so incredibly damaging, and i am so grateful to you for using your platform to be such a beacon of warmth and hope. incidentally, i really want cheesecake factory...

That beachbody coach at the cheesecake factory is disturbing. I’m a bodybuilder and this behaviour is reminiscent of prepping for a show but way more toxic. and the way she demonizes that stuff is beyond problematic - we don’t even do that, and we recognize the dieting we do is for a specific purpose, for a specific day to showcase the work, and it’s not sustainable year round, and it still doesn’t even require us to have “good vs bad” foods. I’m floored at the toxic diet culture, the way they’re not certified to talk on any of this, and are coaching this stuff out.
@caseyc24972 жыл бұрын
I have to eat that way because of coeliac disease, soy intolerance and GERD. I've had to ask if a dish can be changed to accommodate my needs because otherwise theres little I can eat on a meal out. HOWEVER. it sucks. Its embarrassing, it's always a risk that they'll say they do it but dont, its stressful and its BORING. but I have to because of medical conditions. The idea people would CHOOSE this hellscape is mind boggling. The effect on my mental health and my relationship with food is huge, my ED kicked off hard when I was diagnosed with GERD and had to go on the "bland" diet....its exhausting. It's all you think about. I wish stuff like this was illegal

Food should not be correlated with moral value. "I did good today": e.g. I did not eat "bad" food. You are not a morally compromised person if you eat chocolate cake! Makes me so mad...

Hi hello!! I need to go on a little ramble bc I'm very excited!!!!!!! I normally listen to your videos as I do other things and while I've listened to this episode before, this time I caught the word orthorexia and im!!!!!!! So happy I could cry!!!!!!!!!! I've never heard anyone really talk abt it! And it's not officially in the dsm yet as of when I last checked, so docs usually don't like talking abt it!! Some of them know what it is, and will therefore at least diagnose said patients with Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, but it's sadly so common for them to go "I think something isn't healthy here but idk what" and for ppl w Orthorexia to go undiagnosed!! I feel like modern us food socialization(?) makes it REALLY easy to fall into patterns/behavior that would easily form/cause Orthorexia and that it's hard to identify BC of that! Like it's just seen as normal diet culture bc ppl don't understand how harmful non-medical, restrictive diets are!! So thank you SO MUCH! I literally just woke up and this made my entire day 😭💞💞

It's fascinating how people in MLMs either don’t hear themselves or don’t realize they’re proving Hannah’s point. Unconsciously, they emphasise that you only get paid when you recruit others, which isn’t how a normal job works-where you don’t care if someone else wants to join your company or not (imagine getting angry because people are not applying on LinkedIn for advertised roles in your company). But in MLMs, they get really defensive when people aren’t interested in joining. The whole model revolves around constant recruitment because many of the recruits end up being the only customers, convinced they’re 'investing in themselves' when they’re really just buying the products and pretending they’re making sales.

The whole thing sounds incredibly stressful. Constantly thinking about social media posts, live streams, recruiting, selling, scrambling to make deadlines and quotas. I can’t imagine you can be as mentally present with your children as they’re claiming 😞 Seems like all your time would be spend obsessing over your “business”
@pattipeters98612 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Your body may be in the same room as your child but your attention is not. And children know that. She should have used the car ride to school engaging her child to have a good day and do her best. Instead, the girl probably went to school extra-stressed because she could hear the strain in her mother’s voice but didn’t understand it. And was she still in the car when her mother dropped the “F” bomb? Nice.

Something that just occured to me: these mlms are so often pitched as easy money but like....good customer service is a skill. It isn't "easy" it's a lot of work, even if it's work you enjoy. Re the Beachbody hun: I agree with your attitude about eating, Hannah! One of the reasons to add to your excellent list is that it’s often self-defeating. She’s worried about gluten in mashed potatoes (?), so swapped it out for sweet potato fries. She just seemed to gloss over that - I thought, those fries probably have 600-700 calories! (Sweet potatoes are often twice-fried.) So to check, I looked it up on CF’s published nutrition info. Turns out the mashed potatoes she ditched have 450 calories, and the sweet potato fries clock in at 1010 calories! She should have just eaten a bite of her kids’ cheesecake. Or perhaps looked at the nutrition info on her phone before ordering, because often what we “feel” is healthier is anything but. So yeah, don’t take nutrition/diet/“wellness” advice from this or any other unaccredited MLM volunteer. Loved the quick bit about Beautycounter - yikes! Would love a deep dive about them. Love all your videos!
@JamesQMurphy2 жыл бұрын
Just a nitpick: she was worried about dairy in the mashed potatoes, not gluten. But your point about sweet potato fries being super-high in calories is spot-on.

if you find yourself always exhausted no matter what you try (vitamins, caffeine, etc etc etc) i feel like that's time to maybe get checked for a sleep disorder? you may not be getting deep sleep or hitting the deeper sleep levels, so no matter how long you sleep its not as well resting as it should be. not diagnosing a stranger (i HATE that kind of idea) but i will say that anecdote in the first story reminded me of something like this.
