I went to David's gym, NCFA, for four months in 2021 and it had the most solid group of people! It was such a skilled and cool community and I learned so many BJJ techniques, learned to box, and met a few potential future UFC fighters. I knew David was well-respected in the UFC but I never realized his voluntary bow-out of a promising career to focus on the gym. I can say it was a sound decision because he created something very special with his gym in Santa Rosa. Salute to the man.

He really did. Raul Rosas Jr spent a lot of time there during the time I trained there. NCFA is a hidden gem

I was there in 2009-2010 and the environment was pretty intense, and yet still respectful. Dave was a chill funny guy and was pretty hands on as an instructor, which was cool. He was bigger than I thought from watching him on TV, and had almost a Tito Ortiz sized noggin lol. Joe Soto was there at the time too.

I didn't know anything about David before this video, but I can say that I'm glad he had a positive outcome to his career. Unfortunately we all know that's usually not how it plays out in this sport.

His legacy is his gym as you said and he has helped countless young minds develop into well disciplined young adults. The number of kids he helped guide and find happiness is what he should be remembered for. I can’t wait for more of these. I personally can tell you, Dave Terrell is one of the best human beings in the world. I remember when he started NCFA! I remember going to his first academy. His brother is amazing as well as well as his father.

I used to train with Dave Terrell at Gracie Academy in Pleasant Hill, California. Dave was frustrating to roll with because he was so freaking good. One time to get Dave ready for a tournament, Cesar had Dave take on everyone in the class. As soon as he finished with one, Cesar would send in another with no rest break. Dave tapped out one after another like a machine. I'm sorry that injuries got the better of him, he was a great guy.

Amazing. Ive been a fan of MMA for 20 years and I remember the feeling of that David Terrell KO of Matt Lindland. Everyone knew we had just witnessed the next level of this game. As time when on and people kept asking "where the F is David Terrell" I think we all felt let down as to what could have been. The details this video was able to bring were amazing. I knew so little about how this had all gone down and you filled in all the pieces. Great job guys seriously keep this content coming.

I remember him, i remember the hype. He is just a fighter who looked so so good on paper, but in practice he never went anywhere after the loss to Tanner. He is still immortal for the work he did do..he's here on youtube, that means he is remembered forever.

The hype had backing he was badass in training and tournaments but choked in the UFC. He partied too much too the yayo and such

The scott Smith fight had a very controversial ending. Basically the ref went in to separate them so scott stopped fighting but david didn't and he got a choke locked on and the ref didn't do anything about it and changed his mind about stopping the action.

This was very well put together…those early 2000’s with UFC on SpikeTV were so good. So many fighters that just ended up fading away from the sport after having a promising future. I’m glad David is still coaching and getting the next group of MMA fighters ready! On a side note: anytime I hear someone mention Evan Tanners name I instantly get depressed. He was one of my favorite fighters from that era, self taught, wasn’t the best, but you better believe he was going to give everything he had to win. R.I.P. Evan Tanner

I’m not one to comment much, but I have to pay my respects to OGs like this as I sit here renovating my gym. Starting out in 2001 and now having my own Academy because of guys like this who paid their dues and pave the road for dudes like me. I’m no world champion or former UFC champion but a dude in the middle of nowhere who put in work and got his black belt…Thanks to guys like David Terrell! Respect!

Such a well documented video. I trained with the Scrap Pack in the early 2000s and we all looked up to David as a leader and skilled grappler and fighter. It was hard to see him loose to Taner but things happened for a reason. Glad he found peace and passion for teaching BJJ and other MMA disciplines in his community of Santa Rosa. Please make more videos like this.

I remember being a huge fan of his. He was one of the first jiu Jitsu guys that had pretty good hands too. But after the Evan tanner fight, RIP, I never saw him fight again. Always wondered what happened to him. So this was such a nice video to see

Thank you for this video. I was lucky enough to kinda be part of the MMA seen in the mid 2000's and watching this video and seeing the fighters and the brands and all that was a trip down memory lane. What a great era for a new sport!! RIP Evan!

The only thing I could change would be changing to thumbnail of the video instead of the "DECENT" to something different like "The 'ASCENTION' of the legend you did not know" but I do know that you are trying to bring eyes to the video and his story. Well isn't this great timing! I watched the Evan Tanner documentary: Once I was a Champion and this is a nice companion piece. I also can't help, but find parallel in my own life. I may not have made it to the same heights as a David Terrell, but I have dabbled in MMA and still enjoy it as a fan. I have also done other ventures such as being a vocalist in a band and a standup comedian with the dream of reaching fame. This did not happen, but I became a father in 2015 and it helped me to realize that is what mattered the most. I still perform standup locally on occasion and teach my son grappling and striking with pads, so i still have elements of my previous life in my life now, which is great. What I take fro this is that you're destiny may not turn out the way you initially expect it to, but if you can find meaningful purpose in your life then you have achieved your destiny.

Absolutely amazing video. I grew up in Dave's original facility and it was such a good environment to learn in. I remember when he was preparing for the title fight with Evan Tanner and after the fight happened we didn't see him around as much. As a kid I never understood the reality of the situation but Dave was and still is a legend to me. I still tell people who are getting into MMA about the scrap pack and Dave Terrell and they always love learning about it. Thank you for making this video and shining light on a true legend in the MMA world

This was a great video. I got into the UFC after David had already left so I never got to see him fight. He looked like an amazing BJJ practitioner and it sounds like he is a great teacher. It’s nice that he has found peace and happiness outside of the sport. Nothing is more important than family and being able to mentor all those young kids is inspirational.

For those of us were around when it was just NHB and so many of the characters who made names for themselves at that time ended up with tragic lives, this video has been a breath of fresh air. I remember Cesar's and Ralph's killers--they were incredible fighters no one wanted to draw in a tournament. So happy to see that David has made his story a true champion's story.
