W124 fuel tank removed and cleaned - yet again

Time to make a Baja filter to use at each fill-up 😄 All the rubber exhaust hangers these days are shyt. OEM back in the day wasn't much better. If you have a mail-order industrial supplier in AUS you can use . . (we use McMaster-Carr in the States) you can order a small piece (foot-square flat sheet stock) of Textile-reinforced rubber about 12-13mm (1/2") thick and make permanent exhaust hangers. Make two shallow saddle-shaped slots for the car and muffler's tangs (Drimmel, drill bit, punch-cutter etc will work). In the US, 1/2" wide hose clamps are common, and will fit around the edge of the rubber disc. It probably isn't needed, but I have a few Mercs with stainless band clamps around the rubber discs I made many years ago that are still perfect. I live 3 miles down a rough dirt road . . . You'll want to use a reinforced rubber material with a 60-70 shore hardness rating. Natural or Nitrile, 'Merican, not Chinesium. Good for life. I make them round rather than oval to best hold the outer stainless band, and I can use a hole saw in a drill-press to cut them from the sheet. Cheers

NFI, i am suspicious it came from 1 time filling up 98 octane at the oldest fuel retailing site in my area (60 years old) probably came from their crappy, rusting underground tanks. The car never worked properly from that day forward.

Oh… that doesn’t look good… Some cleaning and it’ll be back on track. Just today I finished reinstalling the fuel tank in my 24v after battling with some new hoses and clamps. After priming the pumps multiple times before startup I realised fuel was dripping from the return line onto the exhaust 😳 (all those hoses are new). Re-positioned the original. 15mm clamp a bit lower and leak is gone. Can’t believe a fuel hose can pass over the exhaust. It’s a recipe for disaster and exactly what I was afraid of.

Did you remove the main supply to lin to fuel pump before taking out the tank ? if so, how ? fitting is almost impossible to get to....

Converting it to an EV would be an homage to the 1990 W201 electric 190Es tested for 5 years on the Island of Gruber. You'd just be doing what Mercedes has already done.

haha, I cleaned entire underside of the car with a toothbrush and caustic soda during the restoration process. Every thing was done by me (except paint job) I don’t recommend the caustic cleaning without proper safety equipment, i got quite a few chemical burns at the time.

it certainly is - this is from excessive moisture in the tank. Either from the fuel or the ventilation system not working properly

i never buy E10, as far as im aware its not even sold here. If they are, its illegal as it’s supposed to be clearly marked.
