Outstanding detail. You are very conservative in your weathering. Some modelers are so heavy handed. Thanks for another great episode.
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks. I am a cautious 'weatherer'! lol I have seen too many locos, buildings and scenery ruined by over done weathering by so called 'professionals'. I am learning as I, just trying to tone things down and give some subtle weathering, streaking and general grime. I work from photos for the fuel tanks etc, so I try to replicate these. For example the vertical fuel storage covered in this video (and in much more detail in my Depot Update 2 video) is rusted and weathered, I worked from similar fuel tanks to get this looking real. Thanks again. Dave

Hi Dave, what a cracking video with plenty of variety interspersed with a few short running shots. At the risk of repeating myself may I say that your attention to detail is second to none. I would love to give you a 10 out of 10, but that would leave me nowhere to go when you post an even better video which I`m sure you will, so I`ll give you 9 out of 10 this time. I always eagerly await each new video. Cheers Greg
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg, as always your comments are eagerly awaited and very much appreciated. You've watch me for so long now I am grateful for your continued support and interest in my work. I just love adding detail! Even if you cant see it without really looking for it...I like, where possible to include it. You'll see that when I do the interiors of these building! I am working on that right now and hopefully I will be able to show you progress in my next update. I am really pleased with my efforts on the TMD so far. I am chuffed to have made such a convincing job with the fueling areas, adding weathering as well. The TMD office will hopefully turn out well and leave viewers wanting to peer into these windows to see what is inside! I may not be the quickest builder, of layouts, so I will leave that to others. You cant hurry a self announced perfectionist (something which is out of reach of most of us for most of the time) lol. Cheers. Dave

Hi John, I do have patience, sometimes! lol It comes from being a bit of a perfectionist I am afraid. I cant rush it. I see so many layouts getting rushed...they wont last the test of time as they will fall to bits. By taking my time and building it right I hope my layout can still look as god as it does today for years to come. I like to do channel shout outs in my updates. It helps spread the interest. Some people are on here for their own gain. I like to try help out newer channels. Cheers. Dave

Dave; Great work again. If you don't mind, here are a few tips from a project manager who builds industrial projects. 1. Your steps over the enclosure wall should have handrails for the steps. This is required by health and safety regulations. 2. The top rail of the step railing and the platform railing should be safety yellow in color. 3. The front edge of the steps should be safety yellow in color. Creating a chipping effect in the yellow paint to show the "metal" underneath would be very prototype. 4. There may, or may not be lighting on the horizontal tank platform. Either way would be prototype. If the intention is the tanks would be checked at night, then there should be lighting. 5. If you really want to get prototype on the tanks, you should include some kind of tank instrumentation or an external gauging system to indicate volume of fuel in the tank. You can Google for photos of what this looks like. 6. There may be a requirement for some kind of fire monitor at the tanks in case of fire. This isn't an absolute and can vary depending on volume of fuel stored. Regards; Ron

Hi thanks. Good info and very handy. Health and Safety in the 1980's didnt really figure like it does today, so I can get away with it a bit more lol. Dont tell the H&S folks! I will have yard lighting, which will be near the tanks. The tank instrumentation is a good idea. I have a pump room going near it, so if I dont put in an external gauging equipment I could position in beside or inside the pump room. Thanks for that. Cheers. Dave

Looking really good Dave. You've put together the Knightwing kit expertly, I have one of the same to do so your is a good target for me to aim for! Especially like the paint effects on the gantry. The hard-standing is looking really nice as well - good to see the extra care taken to get it to lay flat! The depot office is stunning - once it's done it's going to look incredible. I'm a big fan of the Lens decoders. Also they have a lifetime guarantee - even if you use them to hardwire them into DC locos!
@cedarcam5 жыл бұрын
Good work on the depot. I like how the office is coming along. Painting it drab inside is just how they were. I think one shade used was a colour called mushroom grey. Warm white LEDs will give it that yellowish glow. I have been looking for knightwing hand point levers and there seems to be a lack of their products at the shows I have been to recently. I hope they are still in business. They have a lot of things like that not made by anyone else.
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah I have an off white/grey colour for the walls mixed and its already been applied to the main internal walls. A nice depressing 1980's office feel with warm white LED to give a yellow dull glow. Hand point levers?...for railwaymen switching the points, say in a depot by hand? Try dart castings. I have bags of them to fit to my tmd point work. Cheers. Dave

Sounds perfect Dave. Just as I remember. Yes that's what I am looking for, for staff to work the points in the distillery. I am going to Derby show tomorrow so will have a look there for some of the Dart castings. Thanks.

Great beginning to the new depot, I used balsa wood for the concrete floor and footpaths but it does bow slightly after being painted. I'm sure when it's finished it'll look great, but to match the standard of your stations roof is going some...that's a really impressive piece of modelling.
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. The station roof is really a major focal point for the layout, as is the signal box and tunnels. I try to have a focal point at various points on the layout, the building site, caravan park, S&T Facility etc. The real focal point on the TMD will be the scratch built office and the large shed which be constructed. I hope to have the Depot as a real 'show stopper' part of the layout. Cheers. Dave

You said that you're adding a step to the front of the depot office building, will you also be adding disabled access ramps in the name of "inclusivity", given that you are modelling more modern than 70s? Great modelling, keep up the good work.
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Holly Ruston hi. It will be a single shallow step. Being that it is a 70’s built office there was sadly not much consideration for people with limited mobility, especially at a depot for railway employees. However I will take that point on board for structures in the town section (yet to be designed!). Thanks for that thought. Dave

Are you thinking of adding a plant room to the roof for HVAC, etc.?
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Plans for the roof are ongoing, but based on the photos I am working from there is no structures on the roof. I have a room within the building (which I am designing interiors for now) that can be the plant room)
@alecralph66675 жыл бұрын
@@DeanPark That's fine, but I thought I would ask. In my dim and distant past as a Civil/Structural Engineer plant rooms on similar structures ware not uncommon. The building is developing very well indeed and I look forward to seeing the final article.

I wonder what brand of diesel oil was used by BR in the 80s. Was there a long contract with BP for example? Or maybe each depot just ordered from the cheapest supplier on a monthly basis? I imagine that a BP tank wagon coupled to a Shell and then a Mobil would be unrealistic in one delivery?

@petercole55965 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, Have you thought about building a wagon repairs factory on your layout? In my home town we had coal mines and factories dotted about most had access to main rail network because of this there was a demand for engine and wagon repairs. The town had two factories that speacialized in wagons repairs one of the works was Wagon Repairs LTD ( Chatsworth Works) based at Old Whittington I decided that it would be something different for my layout found a few photos and built part of the works in it's later years the works closed in December 1982 . My works model often ends up been a talking point only a thought.
@DeanPark5 жыл бұрын
Hi, its a good idea. However its all down to space. I will have factories etc on my layout, maybe I could have an off scene wagon repair shop, with just the factory/repair shop buildings modelled. Who's knows! lol. Cheers. Dave

Hi Dave. Have you ever tried the Soundtraxx Econami sound decoder for a 47 or other loco?
