SHSS wasn't perfect but they seemed to have fun actually being a comedy about superheroes and along with some juvenile humor there were very clever gags too like Cap telling Brubaker over the phone not to worry its just the Civil War (reenactment). TTG does that sometimes too but seems to care more about being "lol randumb" as well as really mean spirited or gross jokes that make you surprised made it into a "kids" show.

The best interpretation of MODOK is still the one from Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, where he’s a powerful and serious threat, but also still pretty funny, mainly because of his voice lol. He reminds a lot of Mojo Jojo honestly, where he takes himself so seriously that it’s just funny.

Yep. The humour there was more-so characters being shocked and baffled by how he looks, rather than making him a pathetic villain. There are times where the limitations of his design are used for a joke, like when Hawkeye shoots his forehead with an electrified arrow that MODOK can't reach because of his stubby arms, causing him to need to retreat. However, it's not overdone and when it happens it's characters taking advantage of his physical shortcomings rather than him being a bumbling idiot that gets himself into trouble.

You know, I always thought M.O.D.O.K had a bit of a humorous bent to him since my introductions to him were the Super Hero Squad Show and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but even then the humor came from the overglazed Christmas ham he brought to the table rather being stand-out funny. In my opinion, a comedy-centered M.O.D.O.K should aim for more of a 80s-90s type villainy like Krang, or Cobra Commander, or Dr. Robotnik for examples, rather than this cutting room Robot Chicken material.

I unironically really want a Howard the Duck cartoon now. He is one of my favorite somewhat obscure Marvel character. Also, it seems to me that DC Comics is altogether better on the animation front than Marvel, or at least they have a large repertoire of hit animated movies that outshines their live movie exploits. It's the opposite with Marvel, while they have hit a home run with their live movies, their animations aren't as noteworthy.

In the 90's Iron Man, they gave him a tragic backstory that drove him into the Mandarin's clutches, but by the time they made the finale (in an S2 that did the kind of improvements you spoke of here), one of the heroes questioned why Modok followed him, to which he merely responded "He makes me laugh", tossing out the prior backstory with a shrug. In UA-1, they made him into a mostly harmless trivia game. The process that made him what he is was terrifying. Yet somehow that gets put aside for 'haha - Big Floating Head Guy' - and they lost me when he did a stream of fart jokes in a row that showed no signs of stopping. Pull the plug or seriously retool.

Personally, the parts of the show I found funniest were when the show made fun of weird, obscure supervillains, heroes, or comic ideas in general. I think that should have been the direction a Marvel comedy show should have went in, adult or otherwise, and strangely, that seems like it would have been the original concept. All the originally planned animated shows were to be devoted to Marvel's most ridiculous characters. I think everyone expected MODOK to be a humorous and self-aware take on the character, but instead, the writers decided to also parody a bunch of adult family sit-coms we already have, and I couldn't really get behind it. Furthermore, there were also moments like MODOK's relationship with his son and the D-List superheroes, that felt almost depressing. I think they were going for the style of the subversive parts of Rick and Morty, but they're not surprising, or infrequent, instead they're treated like sideplots the way they are in Bojack Horseman, and I came away from them not knowing what to think. I think the show was trying to be the wrong thing, and delivered the wrong focus. I think your critique on the voice-acting was very well reasoned, and a great analysis on why the show wasn't as funny as it could have been. but I think the show suffered due to conceptual problems more than execution. But, thanks for bringing up the Harley Quinn show. I want to check it out now.

You know who could be a great team to make an adult comedy in the Marvel Universe about? The Great Lakes Avengers! They are weird and obscure enough to be laughed at, yet their stories can easily be made more sad, for many heartfelt moments in the series. Just imagine those guys always being upstaged by the New Warriors (not the new book team, the nineties one), and, some time into the show, Squirrel Girl is introduced, and she makes the older, more mature GLA bond with younger and more hopeful New Warriors. A ton of laughs, some genuine drama, whacky and semi-obscure characters... I think this could work REALLY well

Oddly enough, Ben Schwartz plays an even younger (?) character as Dewey in the absolutely fantastic Ducktales reboot. I had that sounds-like-a-grown-ass-man problem with all three of the triplets at first, but by the time I was a couple episodes in, I didn't notice it anymore. I think it's because that show's characters are so strongly written to be their own unique thing. For a show targeted more to kids, it has a ton of really, really funny moments.

My first time knowing about Modok was in Marvels Ultimate Alliance where he would drain your power if you got questions wrong, He does have a goofy look but I still remember him being threatening.

I think the issue is that it was released all at once. If it was a weekly released, people would keep up with it. But I binged it in one day, personally I loved it, and then-that was it lol

I’m pretty sure this show was announced before Harley Quinn came out, so it couldn’t have been a response to that. Also, the Hit-Monkey show is still happening, but apparently it might be 2D animated and more action-oriented.

I liked it. Wasn’t a home run but if they made him more dangerous it would’ve been better. Like at the end if he pulled off some huge catastrophe, that killed off some high level yet not as known characters (Leader, Mangog, Dark Beast, StarBran, Hyperion, Gladiator) it would’ve been funnier.

I think a more funny angle for M.O.D.O.K would just be to play him kind of like AoSTH Robotnik honestly, more intimidating and competent than that would fit better but cartoonishly evil and charismatic would really work

Yeah I loved it too. Theres this idea that comic fans feel entitled to a specific thing and if a movie or show doesnt fall in that vision they hate it. I thought it was genuinely funny too like it would fit right in with Adult Swim from 15 years ago.

MODOK SUCKS in the comics he's a C-tier villain at BEST with a ridiculous look that would ONLY EVER be serious in the 70s and an uninteresting origin story it's just whiny man children that complain about this show because "iT hUrT mUh MoDoK!" This show is being criticized way too hard I hate that people are just zeroing in on what it does wrong but it also does plenty right also the thing about modok not sounding Like more evil is a bad criticism considering he’s marketed on the trailer as an average guy who’s also a villain

I really like the plot of the show and hope it is taken more seriously because the concept of knowing you can win but that to do that you need to loose those you love I find really interesting and I would like see what the shows does with that plus I think the comedy will get better and its just trying to find it’s footing

And MODOK isn't just another rip-off of the Monarch from Venture Bros, with a heavy coat of Deadpool/Harley Quinn for good measure. Yeah, Monarch clones are played out. Most of the people I've seen who liked MODOK were fans of stuff like Dan Vs., or Dr. Doofenshmirtz, where the main character's usually an antihero, sometimes an outright villain, so they usually fail, but when they get the rare victory, it's not in the ways they expect. But the fanboy types are right- Everything should be so perfectly catered to their little niche idea of what a good show/movie is that no one else has anything. I quit watching the MCU when it became every character is basically how much can they be like Deadpool without getting rid of what people liked before this trend, because, well... I can't stand Deadpool. I think he's boring as hell, he's like watching watching a self-aware episode of modern family guy. When every character became insert percent Deadpool, the MCU was dead to me. I heard the Black Widow movie isn't very good, and to be fair... It doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. But if it follows MODOK's lead, and stops trying to make everyone insert percent Deadpool, I might be able to find things to enjoy about it. As opposed to just wondering why I'm watching a bunch of actors cosplay the characters while doing live-action Family Guy, like I do with Deadpool, and the modern MCU outside of MODOK.

i think harley quinn works because it was based on real foundations. Harley quinn and ivy were an item in the comics, clayface was an actor in the comics, and harley and joker broke up in the comics. Modok on the other hand, didn't have a foundation to be based on.

They made a huge mess of advertising and marketing for this show, cause i'm sure i wasn't the only one that wasn't even aware of it. Show needed much more visibility and hype. I've never been a comics fan, but I will every few months spend hours on the comic wikis learning about random characters. Dazzler is one I've always found fascinating. My fantasy roleplaying character has light based magic inspired by her powers.
