Here's one for you guys that has been on my list for a while. Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. This was sent in as a Patreon request some time ago and I have finally found time to do it. I don't actually know what time of music this would be classed as. To me it sounds like a mixture between Classic Rock and Disco. Whatever it is, it definitely finds a way to get you grooving. I really don't know how people can hate on music like this. I know that Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music isn't going to be for everyone but the song has such a positive vibe to it that It's hard not to get up and dance to. Please send in some more stuff from Wild Cherry, especially if it sounds like Play That Funky Music!
Here is my reaction to hearing Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music for the first time. I hope you enjoy it!

Definitely not disco. I believe it came out before disco really got going. Disco has a specific steady rhythm and much less syncopation than funk. Those may be the wrong terms, I'm not an expert, just old enough to recognize disco whenever it rears its ugly head. (I'm just kidding. There is some good disco music. No, really there is. Of course, you just have to select it very, very carefully)

@macyjensen3390 The Founding father's of Funk James Brown The Meters Sly & Family Stone Curtis Mayfield P- Funk I would suggest starting with Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (73)🔥 a masterpiece ! Most suggestions are acts that crossed over to a mainstream ( white) audience whom were all influenced by the list I just left which is way more edgy and rough around the edges. No shade on Wild Cherry, it's great but the masters whom are on another level ..

The song was autobiographical, by the way. The band had been booked into a Black venue, was trying to play the kind of rock'n'roll they always had, and the audience kept hollering at them to play funkier. Finally they turned to the manager of the joint and asked him what they should do, and the guy just shrugged and said "Play that funky music, whiteboy..."

As teens we loved it and thought it was so COOL that the singer was white AND the song was, of course, FUNKY!!!!! :) Had to add that things were so less complicated way back when and almost all the music we listened too was innovative, real, and REALLY GOOD!!! We didn't care if it was a one hit wonder as long as it ROCKED! :)

Back then we were blessed to have music of MANY different genres. That’s why we’re the best music critics. I feel bad for young folks today because the music industry limits creativity. Really IMHO it's the opposite. We didn't feel the need to alphabetize, categorize or genre-ize. Just throw it on the turntable and we'll like it or not. There's built-in need for the under 40's to do this it seems.

To explore this genre further, there are so many possibilities, but I strongly recommend that you check out "Jungle Boogie" by Kool & The Gang from the mid-70s. It was a staple at parties and at dance clubs and it's just become this iconic cool dance thing. They had several hits but this is one of my favorites, and I bet you'll love it because it also has an absolutely killer horn section and extra percussion. And it is a black front man in that case.

It’s funk rather than disco. I was a kid in the 70’s and I LOVED funk music then and I still do today. This genre of music is just awesome. So many great artists to choose from. Earth, Wind and Fire Ohio Players Tower of Power Average White Band Kool and the Gang The GAP Band The Commodores That is just scratching the surface. So many great artists and songs. A few song suggestions: Brick House by the Commodores Shining Star by Earth Wind and Fire Jungle Boogie by Kool and the Gang Fire by Ohio Players Keep up the good work, young man and enjoy the ride!
