Making the best walmart mountain bike better! I upgraded the Mongoose Ledge X1 full suspension mtb from walmart using $200 in parts in a previous video. Today, I unveil stage 2 of Project Ledge X1 where I add nice wheels, a dropper post and loads of Funn mountain bike parts to create the best full suspension mountain bike build I've completed to date.

I don't know how old you are, but they used to be considered a premium brand. Making cheap bikes for big box stores ruined their credibility a lot. They still have high end bikes. I have a Diamondback Haanjo gravel bike and it is great.

This why I love this channel. Taking “low end bikes” and within a reasonable budget make them trail worthy bikes that 90% of the populace can get with. Some of these other MTB that I like have “entry level” bikes that seems out of most people’s price range.

You now have a very sharp-looking bike and you chose a great color combination. This would be about 1200-1500 in a local bike store be it Trek, Giant, GT, or Specialized. You can now see what potential the bike really has with this build. Yesterday, both the Ardor & Ledge were back in stock.

If it would only be $1200 - $1500 in a bike shop, then this build is a fail since he's already got $1800+ into it. Pretty sure a bike shop would have to get much more. The Ardor and Ledge were both in stock yesterday, but both also went OUT of stock yesterday too.

@TheChillBison
@TheChillBison 3 жыл бұрын
It's all about what you value. 3-4k is mid-level for good MTBs with name-brand components, and really a third to half that could be suspension, and 10% the groupset. But you get better performance, usually more longevity, probably warranties, and easier setup. And I've tried to price out a custom build of a bike at that price point, and it comes out usually at least 1k more. I'd say it's at about the 6k mark you really get diminishing returns unless you're pro-level.

This is for the XR Pro but the same principle applies here. It's most likely 90mm rear travel just like the XR Pro. As measured, the XR Pro with a 38mm stroke shock has an approximate rear travel: 3.5" or 90mm. I did this by removing the spring on my coil shock and compressing the shock all the way while keeping the bottom bracket to floor height the same as when both wheels touched the ground. Afterwards, I measured the distance of the bottom of the rear wheel to the ground and it's about 3.5". Hope this helps.

So, over $1200 worth of upgrades on a sub $400 bike. Aside from the satisfaction of building it yourself (I get that there is a ton of enjoyment from someone who is into that), would you say that the final result is worth the $1600 price tag? Are there other bikes you would rather recommend 'off the shelf' or from a lbs?

Kev is just giving a idea of expectations on this bike. IN REALITY, you can source a similar build for a grand total of 1000 bucks with bike included. Sourcing components from bike shops IS NOT RECOMMENDED. We CANNOT source high quality BIKE TIRES FOR CHEAP, but thats the only thing. Bikes direct has a HAL 5.5 for a similar price, THAT IS SUPERIOR. Problem is that you cannot buy it for 1000 bucks.

I just wouldn't trust that frame at the end if the day. Its so much smarter to buy a cheap $600 bike store bike to build up. These typically come with the same frames as the high end builds but with cheap components.

Yeah, for $1921 you could get a used frame that has bearings (not bushings or whatever is in a $200 frame) and more rear end rigidity and put the same components on it and have a much longer lasting bike. First things that fail on that bike will likely be the rear pivots and that linkage is completely floppy and usable but not durable. You could do much better for the same money. I like where you say how you could "fool" someone in to thinking its a nicer bike than it was. No kidding... it was a $200 pile of crap and now its a $1921 full suspension bike. Here's my story so far. I bought my Ledge X1. It was VERY clunky out of the box day 1. Literally they should just sell the frame+wheels+seat+handle bar. Brakes, both shocks, pedals, and more are almost useless. I wouldn't even consider the bike "Walmart" quality in it's factory condition. A few days into owning it, I seized up my rear shock. It started by making loud noises, and now it won't compress under my body weight no matter how hard I bounce on it. My front shocks are in very poor condition. Sometimes they compress, then don't decompress until I get completely off the bike lol. I started ordering various parts from your Stage 1 and Stage 2 videos (using your links). Some parts I just picked out on my own though (random hydro brakes). But I bought the pedals with orange studs, stage 2 rear shock, etc, - just no dropper yet. The bike is SOOOooo nice now. I absolutely love it. It feels so good riding it, it's like a completely different bike now. Thanks again for the videos!!!

such an amazing bike, great build, btw a lot of the links are unavailable, you might need to update them for people to purchase those stuff. and for me personally, I would do a mix of stage 1 and 2 to keep the budget down yet upgrading the bike drastically.

Wife caved and let me order the bike since I just broke the forks on my bike yesterday, but don’t think I’ll be able to swing any upgrades for quite some time though. Love watching your builds along the way of a bike I am actually able to own. Keep the videos flowin brother.

Can you include where you are for total costs in future vids. It's one thing to call something a budget bike or build but after throwing $2000 at something that stigma starts to fade. Also it would allow others to compare total price points between bikes. Still it's nice to see someone doing this.

I like the work, but at $1700 before tax for the bike and the upgrades in the description, I think most riders would benefit from buying higher end intro trail bikes for about $2000 for a nice bike or a even nicer bike that’s slightly used. I love watching the videos though

As I’ve always said if someone has the money for a $2000 bike they would be best served buying a complete bike at that price. What I do with my bikes is base my plans on a ride as I upgrade philosophy. Most of my project bikes are spread out over 6+ months. Usually at a cost of less than $100/month invested. It works for me. I’ve never made claims that it would work best for anyone else.

@@KevCentral This bike seems good enough to simply buy and add a good X-Fusion air fork and call it a day(or himilano drift 32)... then just replace/upgrade anything that may break over time. Get the tapered version of the suntour or nearest tapered model, and I would go for a better rear shock, but other than that it's solid.

So next time you need to fish a cable through a frame get a small diameter string but longer than the run and put it into the tube, on the other end where the cable is supposed to come out place your vacuum hose. The vacuum will suck out the string and then you can tape your cable to the string already through the frame and pull it out the other side. I do this all the time in my job.

not really sure what you are referring to as a cheapie (perhaps you mean Walmart bike) and the X1 is simply a great foundation (frame) in which to build a really good mtb, which he did. just curious though, why you wouldn't own it?

Although I'm thoroughly enjoying your bike build videos I can't help but wonder how good the frame actually is. I'm not sure how hard you plan on throwing this bike down hills but with enough pressure and leverage on the front steerer tube I'd be worried about it snapping. I don't know anything about Mongoose's aluminum but I don't think for $400 you're getting anything extremely durable.

Strange how you can buy a 6061 motorized bike frame with the gas tank built into the frame and all the brake & cable mounts for only $155. Yet they want $1,000 and more for a 6061 HT MTN bike frame. The motorized bike frame is more complicated to build, has to be gas tank leak tested and has to be stronger to withstand high speeds & vibrations, yet is only a fraction of the cost.
@khandam7709
@khandam7709 3 жыл бұрын
do you even know what the difference is between aluminum alloys? I guarantee it is 6061 aluminum which costs about $2 a pound. aluminum is a cheap material. Cutting, hydroforming it, welding, heat treating and painting it, is what makes the frame expensive, not the cost of raw goods.
