When it comes to undoing, in your case axle nuts, it’s gratifying to see someone using the correct tool for loosening tight nuts or bolts. Of course I mean the tommy bar instead of the ubiquitous ratchet. Too many times I’ve seen a poor old ratchet being stood upon or hit with a hammer to dislodge a tight one with the inherent risk of damaging the inner workings of the ratchet mechanism. When it’s tight get yer tommy out!

Now that's a phrase I won't forget lol ! But you're absolutely right, I learned tricks like that as a religion, because I was trained as a diesel fitter back in the 80's, and you never use a ratchet for anything, most of the time you'd use a swan neck, specially for wheels, which is a big socket welded to a 1.5" thick length of bar, and then the bar bent 90degrees, the forging process gives a flexibility and they're totally indestructible !

Hi Del , my experience spraying wheels is to fix the wheel vertical on an axle and spin it towards you,in a position that you can reach both sides, doing it this way you don't have to move the spray can about too much , the spinning wheel makes for a nice even coat of paint! l know you have painted wheels before Del sorry if I am stating the obvious!!!

Great work again, I believe the original wheel colours for that year ZX7R was black. Ironically I have white wheels on my 7R, which go well with the scheme but dirt really shows. One thing that may be of use while its apart, its common for the pushrod seals to work loose on these bikes, bit of a design flaw. Often the seal is fine its just they "pop" out of place. Some use a new spacer to restrict it working loose while others a bit of RTV sealant around it, theres lots of online threads regarding the issue, mine failed when riding and coated the rear tyre in oil, luckily I spotted the leak. I have a set of purple wheels off my previous 7R which have just been lying in a shed, paints flaked off but seeing this is tempting to give it a go.

Have a good long look at the Bike before you decide to change the tail, I personally think it(the tail) looks better now that the focus has moved away from the tank. If you change the tail(make it smaller) you 'might' have to alter the bellypan, then maybe the nose next. As I said, Take a good long look at the Bike Before you decide to change the tail, Sort the console out first.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, bang on, right on the money, you are absolutely right my friend.. am really hestitant to attack the tail, as unlike the tank, it's not wrong, it's just, maybe, a little big... and you're right, it will possibly throw out other proportions if I try changing it, so gonna do just as you suggest, get stuck in to the cycle parts and re-furbishment stuff, which won't take too long, and once that's all done, I'll only have the bodywork left to finish... and I think that console needs to be the thing that ties the front to the back, and I've a few ideas for something cool... thanks for your support my friend, much appreciated!

Hey mate...... Now we're cookin'! Those internal threads on the wheel ....... Don't know how you're thinking of blanking those off when you paint the wheel to save paint getting inside. I've always used wooden dowels! Cheap, they pick up the thread, can be shaved to size, come out easy and saves messing about with tape. Just thought I'd throw it in there brother. See you soon!

Like with every design concept, they go through several iterations before they're finally "Complete". It's your bike so it's completely up to you how you want it to look. I myself thought the tank looked odd and now so does the tail but i wouldn't say they were bad. Just different phases of the design.

Should have acid dipped only. blasting alloy wheels gives them a texture of a golf ball. you will need tons of primer to cover this texture. and to much primer can crack down the line. best thing to do. is take them to a powder coaters and as them to powder primer them. then grey scotch this and paint
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Certainly not eh texture of a golf ball mate, more like about 400 grit paper to the touch and a perfect keyed finish for the thick tough black paint I'm planning to use, stick with it mate, it'll look great !

As you talked a bit about the tail unit at the beginning of the video, I would like to say that I love the concept but if I were you (or if it was my bike), I would like to "thinner" the tail maybe cutting the side pannels and creating a concave shape like the tank, but it's just my opinion. As far as it goes I like very much the whole bike and for sure it's the first street fighter style that I like (not a fan of street fighters). As always, great video and very inspiring. @melashkov
@melashkov 6 жыл бұрын
this is was my only question as-well, I guess it is just cheaper, but it is cost 30 quid to do one wheel, so not sure
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
To all those that ask this question, powder coat is expensive, compared to paint, £30 per wheel vs. £6 for a rattle can, but more importantly than a few quid difference, is the durability... I've always powder coat to be too brittle and too hard, if you ever scuff it, or chip it, it can't really be repaired, the whole wheel has to be stripped back to the bare casting, shot blasted again and re-powder coated, and it only takes a careless tyre fitter and you're screwed! ..but this tough paint I'm using is the stuff for crash bars and bumpers, it sets semi-hard, rather than solid, it's durable and tough, almost more like the old stove enameling... I used it on my rat bikes in the past, and it's almost impossible to damage it... it's nothing like regular paint, but don't ask me what's in it ! I just know it works really well for what I need....!

thank you very much for doing this process. locally I get a lot of pushback from tireshops who dont want to put tires on "painted" wheels vs a powdercoated wheel. Why paint vs powder coat? wouldnt the powder coat be even more durable? just curious. thanks for the video.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, spoke at length with my tyre fit guy about this, and his opinion is that he prefers paint on wheels cos it's more flexible... don't confuse hard with durable, cos that's what powder coat is, it's originally an industrial coating for machines and it's easy to chip cos it's very hard, whereas paint is not so hard so not so liable to chip and if you do damage it, it's easy to sand it back and spray it over to make an almost invisible repair .. stick with it, am painting them tomorrow !

Good result. If you dont mind me asking del, how much did that cost you? Looking at getting my 990 rims stripped and powder coated orange :) cheers mate
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi DJ, the local guy did it as a tea money job at £40, but as that was strip only, he quoted me another £60 to powder coat them, and I'm gonna use the satin black tough paint, which has worked for me many times, is really durable and will cost me about £8 worth of paint to do the pair! Of course if you want a lary colour, powder coat is one of the best ways to do that , so I imagine you might pay about a ton for the pair, done and dusted, but don't forget to factor in 5 wheels bearing as well as any cost of taking off, and re-fitting the tyres... it all adds up aye mate?!

(p) I've really enjoyed the fabrication but the spanners and hammers make a refreshing change. Even though I, like others, pointed out the tail being too big, cameras are notorious for distorting the scale and maybe in real life it doesn't look so out of scale. Anyways, good video as always.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi PJF, you're dead right my friend, certain camera angles, especially on semi wide screen makes the tail look 4x it's size... the back of the tail unit is smaller than the tank in every direction, it's as much as 3" narrower, so perhaps it's just the curves that give that impression, but haven't finished with the bodywork yet, just fancied a change to gett he spanners out again!

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
No shouldn't do mate, remember most for he time you fit bearings to wheels that are already painted, I've never chipped paint yet, but am planning to replace these bearings gently, am gonna use a bridge puller to remove them, and a bearing driver to put the new ones in, and I mean the threaded bar kind, rather than hammer them in, it'll be a test of the tough paint, it's never let me down yet, I just didn't wanna risk even one grain of metal grit getting in the new bearings, you know how easy that can be !

Hi TH, I did think for a while about spoke rims for this bike, but then checked out a few German streetfighters with them already, and they do look a bit odd... also that's a 6" wide rear rim, so that would have to be custom made only, as far as I know, there aren't any 6x17 rims out there in the second hand world... and I've already had a pair of custom built alloy spoke rims with Tallon hubs for Penny's Scrambler, and they were not cheap by any means lol - couldn't afford a set for this bike, even if I wanted too ha ha

Goonster - hi mate, what Andrew says is right, powder coating is really best for frames and other industrial equipment, the reason it's often done on wheels at the factory is cost, as the process of powder coating is simple and not expensive, compared to running a full paint shop and of course the cost of materials is remarkably different, but small individual powder coating jobs have just become habit for most people with wheels and small parts, sometimes because they can't paint to any standard, and others cos they just can't be bothered, it's so easy to hand it over to a guy and have it all done a day later, but in real terms, paint is always best on wheels, it's more durable and flexible, it doesn't chip so easily and if in the even you do chop the paint on a wheel, you an just sand it back and spray it over in a localised repair, which you can't do with powder coat.. stay tuned, you'll see, am painting them tomorrow for Saturday's video !

Glad for you it worked out that the wheels were in such desirable shape under the layers of paint. As I prepare mentally to make some cosmetic modifications to my bike this year I can understand why people cut corners- whether it's that they never learned the process, want to go cheap, or don't have the patience to make a proper project of it and feel constrained by time to get it done. That said, there's nothing quite like doing it the right way full-on and the result speaks in your pride and connection with the job well done. It's something you've practiced so what takes you an hour may take some of us 5 or 7 hours as we grope in fear not knowing if we are getting in too deep. It's helpful to know that everyone, even you -had to learn at some point. Thank you for sharing the project and the tips to understanding some of the wisdom in the process. Wishing you and Penny a blessed new year with good health and success in your endeavors.

Hi Ali, how nice to hear from you and what a wonderful message - thank you! I'm still learning every day, from other creators on YT, from friends and, of course, my own mistakes of which there are often many - you know how it is, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and if you don't try it out for yourself, you'll never know if you can do it or not...! Am glad the videos we make can inspire you, thank you again for your wonderful feedback, keep safe and stay in touch brother, all the very best for 2018, D&Px

Nice, I know motorcycles is your thing but can you consider doing a project on scooters too, in the how to department since they have some parts totally different to a motorcycle as the clutch for example thx.

You just did a video on using vinegar to take off rust. What would soaking a bike chain in vinegar do?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff.. i would initially think not to do that, because im not sure how it would effect the rubber 'O' rings, also it would dissolve ALL the lubricant right inside the rollers... it may not do any harm, but its not a thing ive ever done.... i have a chain that wont ever be going back on a bike, ill be using it for some sculpture projects... so ill be putting it in some vinegar this weekend to test this out...! only time will tell ,and ill show the results in two weeks time..!

Thank you my friend, I really appreciate that kind endorsement, but when I see some of the amazing art that people make with metal parts, it leaves me baffled... certainly gonna get involved in a few things though, and maybe I can develop a few skills in that direction as I go along - thanks for your support mate...

Hi Del. I'm thinking that maybe by the time you've built that little console for the speedo that that might bring everything back into line! would seem a shame to mess with that back end! I think that looks really good. but as you said can't please everyone, and at the end of the day this is your bike. so it gotta be something you like. good to see them wheels came out ok LLAP

I think what is making the back end look a bit wrong is that the top of the tank is so flat, if when you put the speedo pod on you can add some curves to it, it will then make the back look right. I would also go for the paint on the wheels, it is easier and cheaper to rectify when you do get chips in them.

Hi Karl, doing exactly that my friend, for exactly that reason... most people always default to powder coat, but it only takes one clumsy tyre fitter and you can never repair the damage!

Had a chain come apart as a teenager due to my own damn neglect and being skint and I got away with it as it just fell off the bike and disappeared, so by my reckoning, that was my one lucky chance, not risking on having another one lol !

Who was it said, "You can please all of the people some of the time, and all of the people some of the tIme, but you can never please all of the people all the time"? I enjoy most of your videos (the FRO videos are not for me, but that's your choice, not mine. My only comment is that it makes you seem like a grumpy sod ), just keep plugging away and there will be something of interest to most.

Hi Steve, haven't done an FRO for a long time, as exactly like you said, I'm not a grumpy and it's not really me, it started out as a tongue in cheek kinda Victor Meldrew thing that took off a bit, it was a great way to occupy the ride to work, but I'm too busy in the garage nowadays anyway... thanks for your support, much appreciated...
