it should be stated the melee largely taken by the "terminators" are s9 ap2 d2 concussion gauntlets not the swords - they will mulch light vehicles especially with the +1 to wound from judgement tokens making them wound heavy tanks on 4's in melee. They also have a strat for ap based on token count in melee, so ap4 on the 2 token units. Hearthguard getting ontop of your backline will destroy it entirely, so make sure to actually screen for your basalisks or they'll cease to be after 20+ attacks hitting on 2's wounding on 3's d2 ap4. Basilisks don't get saves against ap4. They also have a sustained hits 2 strat for those 30+ volkite shots and 10d6+10xblast grenade shots on the hearthguard. 10d6+10xblast+sustained2 is a stupid amount of dice to have hitting on 2's. Especially when paired with their Kahls - which give them lethal hits. 30 volkite with sustained 2 hitting on 2's is a silly amount of devestating wounds out of completely nowhere. and they have the CP to do all this because the moment they kill one of their pre-marked pinata's they get 3~cp come their next command phase. Basically just... be way more scared of the hearthguard than anything else on the table. Their warriors only matter for objective play, their bikes only matter for objective play, their beserks turn to mush the moment you think about shooting them but the hearthguard? you gotta screen deepstrike properly, you gotta focus fire them the absolute moment you can and you should build a wall of infantrymen corpses so they cant charge your vehicles.

For an army that can wound a Baneblade with its weakest guns on a 5 roll, the biggest clanger I’ve experienced from them is their ability to kill you in your own turn. Reactive reprisal costs them 2CP, but since they are awash with CP’s it’s not really that big a spend for them. The only way I’ve found to help with this is by using Kurov’s Aquila enhancement to bump its cost to 3 each time they do it. Failing that, if you shoot anything, make sure you’re using the right tool that is going to if not finish that unit, then cripple it to the point where the votann don’t want to burn 3 CP on return fire from the survivors. Also: I learned that thunderkyn really don’t like suppression fire, or anything that makes them -1 to hit. Update: I brought a shadowsword to a game and brought it on in reinforcements. Made the mistake of firing it straight away and failed to hit the target. He reactive reprisaled me and took my 24 wound toughness 13 super heavy down to 5 wounds in my own turn.

I like this series, I’m a new player and I know how I’d like to use the emperors finest in general, but I don’t know how I SHOULD in any given situation I’ve only played against tyranids and the big knights so far, and I want to start playing games at local stores soon, so it’s nice to have a rough idea of what I’m likely to be up against

Also a Votann player here and I've got a few things to add. Thunderkin overwatch on 5+ rather than 6. Significant improvement and something to be prepared for if you're charging them. Hearthguard run fists mainly rather than the sword gauntlet. They're excellent. A lot of players are running the missile launcher on the Sagitaurs now. It gives you two weapons and one has two profiles (essentially frag and krak). The bigger of the two launchers has the same stat line as the HyLas cannon but is a steady Damage 3 and it doesn't have sustained. So an excellent compromise and far more consistent.

Whoever had the bright idea to bring space dwarves back but not give them beards has no business working for GW. If it was my company and I caught the design team in a fairly late stage of development with the re-release of squats and none of the models have beards so they actually look like f’ken dwarves I would have fired them all on the spot.

Cadia Stands stops things effecting that unit. judgement tokens do nothing to the unit they target, they buff things that attack it. It does nothing to judgement tokens.
