Listen to the missionaries instead, not these stories. Most people in this channel have left the church, and once people leave their covenants, then they don't have the spirit anymore with them. They just have the spirit of contention. They start attacking the church. It is very sad....By the way, I don't think this bishop left the church. No courage, just selfishness. He put NO thought, to who would be hurt in this process, such as his congregation, family friends. In fact if you listen to the speech he only talks of HIMSELF! Does he thank others NO. The guy talks in nonsense. For example he starts by quoting Mormon verse and how he would never go against that verse and then in the end does what he said he never would do. And if he is actually leaving the Church, and doesn't believe in the Church why is he quoting Mormon verse?

Improving is good, but allowing Christ to work in us is what he wants, not us trying to improve ourselves. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). I don’t disagree with you that we are saved by grace after all we can do. Period. I get it. All I’m saying is that we will be judged for things we have done. So if you are a murderer, Jesus doesn’t have to love you for that. He will forgive whom he chooses to forgive. All will be saved by grace but not all will dwell with him for eternity. Why would they. This was not a surprise to leadership. He had already asked to be released and I'm sure he told them why. It was actually smart to just let this play out. It would have been worse to try and silence him and his story would have come out anyway.

In my former ward in Portland Oregon, a bishop left the church in 2009 who I had been a counselor too. I Had become the bishop of that congregation in 2003 and served in that capacity until 2009. My successor left the church in 2011, and I left in 2012. We all left for our own reasons, but all were valid ones. None of us had been unfaithful, or wanted to live a sinful life. Independently of each other, we each simply realized it was not true. Since then, the church's influence has greatly diminished in Portland Oregon. I have no regrets.

He did not resign from church membership here, he asked to be released and resigned from the calling of Bishop. Those are two different things. Best wishes. I understand some of this. I am active in the church, but came home early from my mission 25 years ago, dealing with mental illness, anxiety and depression. It was right for me at that time.

Brother Nick Jones, doing what he did, knowing how many people might feel hurt along the way, took more courage than one might ever know nor comprehend! Sooooo much courage! Only a coward chooses to stay silent and support things that are just not right and only the brave speak out against it and pulls away. And to do it publicly requires more truth to one self and to one's pairs than most man would ever have the courage to do! To quote scripture one believes in, while refusing to support what is unrighteous, what brings away from self dignity and from God, is right. And in choosing the right, he honored himself, his family and his Heavenly Father! A man/a person like that, I respect and support!!!

He resigned from the bishopric and the church because he caught a known pedophile, contacted the law offices as per the training they were given and was told to ignore it. So he did the right thing and called the cops. The church would’ve exed him anyway.

I would wait. They wont care because the church sets them up in advance with reasons why people leave that arent the churches fault like sin, mental health, lack of faith, talking bad about a church leader, not enough study, etc. This wont affect them. And he was vauge. If he comes out and says, they asked me to cover up someone confessing sexual sin and I could not do it, then it may be impactful.

I don’t care if someone chooses to leave the church. I am a follower of Christ and no one else. I don’t care if a stake president leaves. My testimony isn’t in him. The savior won’t love him any less because of his choice to leave. He died for all of us. I have siblings that have left, this guy to me is no more than a man. He has faults just like the rest of us. People leave the church every week. What is so different about this! You guys that get so excited over bishops quitting think this is such a big deal. It’s not. He will be fine and continue to live his life with his family.

Wow, the tears are real and not the fake and forced tears at general conference. I wish that he shared what was asked of him. It seems like something to with justice and youth. I can only assume he was asked to cover up something. Yes a lot of questions.. but why does he want a person who would do a better job. Honesty i respect him, and would respect him more to not resign but fight back as that better person. Too many good people resign falling short of being great fighters back against the system.

I want to stress, I do believe he is brave. But standing up to the point of being excommunicated is braver, and others have done it. Simply getting replaced by another sheep doesn't make the herd better. A sheep becoming the shepherd is what the herd needs. I think it unwise to burn bridges. Keep your friends, treasure them and acknowledge to yourself that there are differences but, hey, that's the world. I stopped attending the church in January 2002. I did nothing to offend any of my Mormon friends but found, sadly, that after all those decades of faithful church membership, I only really had one friend in the church. He has been with me all these years. I am fairly smart and, for reasons entirely related to himself, my stake president decided that I, a former bishop, was a danger to church members. He held a church court (now renamed to be more politically correct but still the same). I had to appear in front of the stake presidency plus high council, with the stake clerk taking minutes. One high counsellor was appointed to defend me (no prior contact) another to oppose. Naturally the process was resolved as per the stake president's wishes and I was excommunicated. As the meeting closed, I stood up and said that I did not accept this decision and that it would be reversed. I had already contacted Australia's Privacy Commission. Since the USA has weaker privacy laws than Australia, I can object to any document with personal details being sent to the USA. The next morning the Stake President was contacted by the Privacy Commission and informed that he was unable to send the excommunication documents to the USA, a necessary final step for former bishops. Two weeks he called me into his office, told me that he had changed his mind, and tore up the excommunication in front of me. I have always been a member in good standing from that moment on and naturally, have never done anything to offend or challenge any church member. This has stood me well because there is now a much less narrow-minded leadership in the church here. The leadership team is focused on doing good work, not because it is a commandment but because it is in their nature. My ex wife is mentally ill and I have followed how much more sustained and focused their care is on her, a difficult person at the best of times. A few months ago I discovered that I had grade 5 prostate cancer (the most agressive) and that it had been lurking in my body for 4+ years. The lack of earlier discovery was due to doctor negligence in my annual checkups. As an immigrant who lives alone, I need all the help and support I can get. One thing I did was ask, via my only friend, if the church would pray for me. This they did and the next Fast Sunday I went there and thanked them publicly in the Fast and Testimony Meeting. It was the first time I had spoken in church for 22 years. I was suicidal at the time and had been for months following my diagnosis, so there were copious tears. It was purging to be able to share my grief with a community I had loved so deeply and still do love.

I watched most of the full interview. I took from that he had left the church. Listening to this it sounds as if he was just stepping down from the bishopric. Praying this man finds his way to the God of the Bible. I grew up in the Mormon cult and experienced most of what he shared in the full interview. Praying he comes to the understanding that it truly isn’t religion but a relationship with the living God.

My husband was a Bishop for nearly 8 years. It's important to accept that no humans are perfect. No church leaders are perfect. We serve and try the best to support, forgive, strengthen each other along the way and to bear each other burdens in the Ward. We continue to believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints despite all its warts.

Good for him. It does take a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe when you are in this type of position. It is important for him to speak his truth so there isn’t speculation and gossip about what great sin he may have committed. When I was a Mormon, our 2nd counsellor left the church and there was so much speculation and gossip about what HE did - like he had committed some great sin and had been ex-communicated when in fact it was a faith crisis due to the unexpected death of the 2nd of his 3 children.

Me too I left the JWs at age 16 still a minor but no longer living at home I had some horrible dealings with some of those people which helped to drive me out.

What a courageous thing to do!! I wish I had would've heard that message when I was young and had the same courage. People not indoctrinated don't realize how difficult it is to leave, and to do it from the pulpit takes massive bravery. Thank you for following your conscience. You're a great example for us. I was a young mom in the 80s when l joined and baptized in the Mormon church. Paid tithes. I was very active. When the bishop told my husband we were bad bc we needed to pay more money to the church. What? We barely made ends meet was was very proud we paid 100 percent if our tithes. Then l discovered the garments. Then l discovered tge profit was ranked in order of 12 men....much more. After 20 months my family walked away. Completely. Too much weird crap. I was conned and things held back prior to me joining.

And that scripture is why we must acknowledge that the brethren are fallable. They suppose they have all the power and do not need to include us in their decisions. Even the curtesy of transparency. Investing our tithing in the market, heavily on weapons manufacturing that end ups destroying and destabilizing lives and peace around the world is not what christ's church is supposed to be engaged in.

This was so unbelievably brave and just amazing to watch, but I am legitimately surprised no one tried to escort him off the stand… that has been done. A kid coming out as gay over the pulpit was escorted off and scolded for it. And this dude literally resigned as bishop AND the church over the pulpit! I wish that my resignation from the church was met with so much love and compassion. To this day, I’m still loosing friends.

Typically, the bishop is the person that shuts off the mic. So when the person that is responsible for shutting off the mic is speaking then the stake high councilor would have to intervene.

if you want to resign as a Bishop, just ask the Stake President directly, they will find a new Bishop. Do not make it so complicated. God still loves you even if you are not a Bishop anymore.

A general comment. It just occurred to me that there are similarities between LDS and scientology that should be explored. Salient is the fact that there is a lot of VERY weird secret stuff that is only revealed after you are highly invested . And, perversely, this weirdness further locks you in…. As opposed to repelling you, as it would if you were exposed to it in the beginning

I think this is hilarious. I have actually been learning about Scientology. We are nothing like they are. You need to look at them more. I was pretty surprised by their behavior and was really greatful that we can still stay connected to our families if some one decides to leave. We don’t go around threatening your lively hood. We don’t put away our leaders wife for years and wonder where she is. Oh man, they are nothing like us

Thanks for your thoughts I understand there are many important differences between LDS and Scientology The particular comparison i was makings is the fact that both have certain elements that strike me as bizarre… in the Case of lds i am referring to things like the secret temple ceremonies, and the baptizing of dead people I agree that lds does not formally shun people…. Although, if you are labelled as an apostate, you become a second class citizen who then becomes a person that is merely tolerated … the constant moral judgement is inescapable and at a minimum rather unpleasant

I can’t imagine how hard that job must be. At least pastors, priests, and other bishops from other institutions have some type of ecclesiastical degree. Your dentist down the street can be called to be Bishop… I just can’t imagine how hard on a person mentally this is..

When I went to meetings there were men in the first class that just shit on daycares and families that needed to utilize them. Because you can support a family on one income easily these days, right? 🙄

Thank you for your service Bishop from the bottom of my heart. It is truly inspiration to be called to that position. I wish that you can discover the infinite Love of Christs Atonement. Although the church is not perfect Christs Atonement is and that makes all the difference. Yes God loves us as we are amd not for what we do but he wants is ro have the best life in eternity. His whole plan is to exalt us. Being faithful is a wrestle and there are times where you feel judged by others but we have the Book of Mormon and we have living Prophets who point us to Christ. The covenant we make will pick us up Everytime we fail. I know that. The covenant that we have with Christ is personal and will help you through anything. The Son of man hath decended below them all and he knows exactly what you are going through. Use this as an opportunity to draw closer to him. I wish you Gods choicest blessings. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is true and it has been restored to the earth.
