@@DARIDURI-d3k Tina Turner is in a totally different class of music. Tina was the queen of Rock & Roll and she has died. Patti LaBelle is still alive, not retired and doing well and yes I'm giving her flowers while she's here. Can't do that for Tina. Now, you move along and stop trying to put two legendary ladies in one class.

One was a singing group and the other is a sangin' group. This was why patti and the girls weren't invited to event in the 60"s. They were the reigning queens of snatching edges and handing out seats in those days. Hell, James Brown had them close the curtains on them before patti hit her high note ..smh

as her old bandmate, Cindy Birdsong said about her "there was NOBODY like Patti on the rock ' roll circuit...because nobody had her range or stage presence. She may not have had all the confidence in herself, like Diana or Aretha had, when they were very young, but you would never have known it...and neither one of them could hold a candle to Pat, standing flat footed and just singing with no micorphone in their hand" (which is what her close friends called Patti)..you dont have to believe the quote if you dont want to...but its in Patti LaBelle's book. And I read her book, twice.

People talking about her "screaming" gets me hot!!! Yes, she has a big, full powerful voice-- so naturally it's loud. But no different than an opera singer-- they rarely use microphones and "cut" the band. Nothing different than what she does-- but she's not a one trick pony. Patti has an absolutely amazing voice, with so much agility! Her softer notes are simply beautiful-- and her control to switch to it and right out if she feels like it is insane.

Murray The "K" was a great host. This was the clip they showed of Patti LaBelle & Her Bluebelles. Some of the other performers were: Herman's Hermits "Mrs Brown...." Chuck Jackson "l Don't Want To Cry" Johnny Rivers "Seventh Son" The Ronettes "Be My Baby" and Martha & The Vandellas.

@@theheff66 not so sure that it was June 28th, 1965. That was the date of the PBS special but it was not all live (don’t know if any of it was live). Most of the clips were from previous shows so this could have been from an earlier Murray the K Christmas or Easter show held at the Fox. Doesn’t really matter as they were unbelievable in person. I went to almost every one of his shows and the Bluebelles were in several of them. They sound good in this video but they killed this song every time they appeared live. In the middle lower altoSoprano and Soprano flanking Cindy Birdsong bleeding the harmony. Motown kept her(Mary Wilson) microphone volume lower than the lead. They always sounded like screeching harpies painfully straining only sang with missRoss -live- on stage all tv appearances were pretaped ad-hoc lead with the Andantes' background also taped. Ross sang over her own voice the girls swayed sashayed and lipsynced. She was shrewdly transplanted to the Supremes we never heard her voice. But on a talkshow she did sing stop in the name of love, live. Became a ucla and motown secretary for suzanne de passe after 197something. Patti never discussed this with miss Ross. Though Cindy began as Florence Ballard best friend on the road shows. Sarah Dash is soaring like cissyHouston here

No voices in either 1988-millennium group here unfortunately can approach these vocals... these are pillars upholding a voice 🏢 building. I love who can I run to though.

Berry Gordy was trying to steal their soprano, hoping it was Birdsong who kinda favored Ballard, but he didnt know Dash was the 1st (or 2nd) soprano.

If he got his hands on Sarah there would be no labelle. The group would have totally fell apart forcing patti to go solo earlier or maybe even ending her carear?

@@nesq4104LaBelle would’ve worked with Nona and Cindy. The backgrounds would’ve just been very Nona heavy. I love Nona’s tone and you have to remember that Nona was the pen of LaBelle…

@@PhillySoulable Nona was the one of the group, agreed, but Sarah was the glue. Patti and Nona were known for butting heads occasionally. Sarah has that calm, loving persona. I don't know Cindy much so I can't speak on her. But Cindy was not filling Sarah's shoes with those notes. Some of the best Labelle live moments is when Sarah comes in with that powerful soprano. I'm not sure if Cindy could do that. I know Cindy can hit a few notes like Patti though. I think LaBelle would have never happened if Cindy stayed or Sarah left. Maybe a whole different vocal group would have emerged or it would have just ended for all. Who knows.

@@PhillySoulable I guess to add on to my point is that Cindy wouldn't have stayed, clearly she abandoned ship without telling her group members, that made Patti upset for decades. So no I don't think she has the persona to allow a LaBelle to form/thrive because she already shown that she was not willing to stick it out with them.

I love cindy so much but her vocals wasn't that powerful with both Group in this video Cindy voice is lower than the other she had a high pitch range but couldn't belt it out like patti or Flo and she knew that it made her feel insecure to where she didn't want to sing lead but her vocals where perfect even though she couldn't belt it out

Interesting analysis. It is too bad that Cindy didn't have more confidence in terms of her singing, because she could have easily taken over the lead spot in The Supremes when Diana Ross left in 1970. Cindy was no Jean Terrell for sure, but for the kinds of songs The Supremes were doing in the 70s, Cindy would have been fine singing lead. Her voice was close enough in range to Diana's to not be a major departure from what fans of the group were used to. I watched Cindy's solo show from the 80s, and my one caveat is that she would have needed to relax her pronunciations a bit to sound a little less proper. But singing behind a singer as stellar as Patti LaBelle and then joining The Supremes with a bunch of hoopla and scrutiny she didn't ask for, I can see why Cindy didn't have the confidence to assert herself.

@@hylndrfan well I still disagree. After listening to interviews, the loss of Cindy changed the group dynamic plus the change of music into rock and roll etc so the remaining members stated they likely would have broken up. It was Vicki wikman that encouraged them to revamp the whole style after Cindy. But I would have loved to see what Labelle would have been like with Cindy
