Carey’s perception of depression being the body’s response to taking a break from “being a character” is such a unique take on the condition.

I have been wondering why so many people seem to be depressed and how to solve it. It seem to be so many something must be wrong with society as a whole. This interpretation makes sense, and more people should hear it. But I think there could be many other causes as well
@TheHorseshoePartyUK

@@zakosist Depression is caused by any of, a mix of, or all of: Our own lack of logic, poor decisions, plain bad luck, life just doing it's thing at times we can't stop, and rapid structural changes to society since the industrial revolution & WW2. It's far too lengthy to go into in a comment, or even a comments section. I should probably write a PhD on it and go straight to PhD without even going to University. All I'll do now is leave you with some choice quotes and a relevant video. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" - often cited to Aurelius, but no clear evidence. Possibly Disraeli. "Who is my Master? He who decides what I do or do not like" - Epictetus who was born a slave, then became the most sought out Philosopher and teacher of his time in ancient Greco-Rome "Obsessively hating your enemies is like you drinking poison, and expecting them to die" - often attributed to Buddha, no clear evidence. Maya Angelou, others. "We are more often frightened and pained than we are harmed" - Seneca "Man suffers as much as he believes he does" - Seneca. Not an absolute truth, if you're in a truly nasty situation your suffering is indeed valid. "If you're going through Hell, the best course of action is keep going through" "Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong" - Sir Winston Churchill - a very mixed character, did some terrible things, great things, pithy quotes. Also terrible at maths! "Don’t depend too much on anyone in this world because even your own shadow leaves you when you are in darkness" - Ibn Taymiyyah. A lot of his other views are *distinctly* 1300s. However, that is a great quote indeed! "Be Water" - Bruce Lee's philosophy massively oversimplified "What stands in the way becomes the way." - Aurelius kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3eag62Be7KoipY "Desire is a contract that you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want” - Naval Ravikant "Building castles in the sky, requires you have both feet firmly on the ground" - not sure, maybe one of mine? Can't find it on a search "Making the world a better place, is a marathon, not a sprint" - The Horseshoe Party UK, though I possibly nicked it from somewhere, cannot find it on a search. "At one extreme of the Horseshoe of Morality is being so selfish you get in your own way, harm yourself, other people, and society. The other extreme, is so selfless, you get in your own way, harm yourself, other people, and society, by being an easily dominated and manipulated doormat" - The Horseshoe Party UK "Self-Interest is perfectly normal. Ourselves is all we'll ever really know, and not that well at that. Try not to go out of your way to screw other people over for no good reason or even because your emotions tell you it's ok. Be kind, but not a doormat" - The Horseshoe Party UK "Strive for perfection, do not throw TANTRUMS if you cannot achieve it or receive it, if absolutely necessary and there is no other way, accept the lesser evil" - The Horseshoe Party UK "The saying "where there is a will there is a way", is not accurate, often unhelpful, and can even encourage delusion. However, "without will, the ways will never be found" is more accurate and helpful" - The Horseshoe Party UK

in most cases, depression is the feeling that things you desire will never happen, there's no hope, there's no point to go on. but for many people, what they desire is to be somebody, to have their identity, their worth validated, eventho that identity is just a character they created for themselves.

You’re not afraid of people, you’re afraid of people around you, you’re afraid of rejection. You’re not afraid to love, you’re afraid of not being loved back. "Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you've been trying to play." That sentence alone gave me an entirely different view of my depression. I went through severe depression from my mid-teens through my late 20s. I still have it, but its nowhere near what it was. I never took meds or anything for it. I just kinda... survived it. Though now I'm realizing that I'd been "playing a character" the entire time and the depression was my body's response to hating who I was pretending to be. I'm realizing that the reason I've been able to come out of it and feel better is bc I'm not pretending to be a character for people anymore. I've been able to finally be myself. Thanks for that, Jim.

When I heard that crowd laughing, not being quiet and thoughtful, it made me sad. Sad, that people either are unable to hear AND understand the profound thoughts from Jim Carey because they believe it to be some comedic act, OR because they have to cover their own devastation with laughter over how they all are still in the rat race to prove to themselves their own worth by claiming prizes from the world.

The poignant message there, was not really a sad revelation - I feel that it was a moment of complete recognition, that he was so detached from the thousands, if not millions he was addressing. He then probably realised, he knew something that the audience just didn't get; while using that particular anecdote - albeit sad, I believe it was probably equally comforting. Akin to a mountaineer, reaching the summit and warning those on the way up, that it might not actually be worth the effort.... I like Keanu Reeves far more. He doesn't feel the need to get involved in politics and tell people they're wrong. Not to mention all the kindness he's showed to fellow humans, and his obvious humility. He's got a lot of reasons to be spiteful, with all that he's lost, but he remained a good person through all of it.
@dhenderson1810
@dhenderson1810 6 ай бұрын
@@TheNonEdibleCheese Not saying Keanu isn't all these things. But the media influence who is deemed nice or not in Hollywood. How much you make yourself available for interviews, how many influential friends they have and how their PR is shapes the narrative of how the media want you to think of this person. So if some in the media don't like a celebrity, they will dig up dirt on them and make them look bad, whereas the same from a celebrity they like, they won't report. Some get an armchair ride and some get the bucket poured over them. This then shapes the public's opinion, as many rely on media to know celebrities, so they take a media person's opinion to someone as the truth. Keanu may be a nice guy, or he might just be presented that way. Unless you actually get to know a person, you can't really judge them.

I have always been a huge fan of Jim Carey and raised my now adult children watching his movies over and over. I have a 30 year old son with autism who would reenact scenes from his movies from start to finish and could not stop until he had acted out the entire scene. Many times I was pulled out of movies or dinners to get him out of the mens room where he was kicking his ass and beating himself up. A few years ago, I got rid of my Tv and stopped watching movies and traded it for books, podcasts and meditation. After listening to his book, I decided to watch the Jim and Andy show, and I thought.. I wish that I could tell him how much joy and love and happiness he has brought into my life and the lives of my children over the past 25 years. How many times he has pulled me from the depths of hell with his humor and how I couldn’t have made it through my life with his medicine of laughter. I have so much gratitude for you Jim, and I would love to say, that if you are ever feeling sad or lonely, please think of me, and remember how many lives you have affected and changed and inspired. How many people you have brought joy and laughter to simply by being you. Not everyone gets to be in this scenario and I do my damnedest to make sure that my wife and daughter know how grateful I am to be a part of their lives everyday. No matter how much stuff I have or money I make, absolutely nothing would replace the happiness I feel on a daily basis. I legitimately can say that I've never been happy before in comparison. I love how at the end of it, he says "because then I would be enough" and everybody just laughed ... So sad, I don't think that anybody actually LISTENED to what he was saying. I think he is hugely motivational. My favorite comedian/actor/"celebrity" (whatever you'd call it) because he's not afraid to talk about the shit that's hard, the shit that hurts. He is not afraid to tell anybody that the shit means nothing, it's all bullshit that we tell ourselves to make it seem like the world as we know it is not this fake existence that's ruled by people who are leaching off the rest of us. It's sad. But at least there's somebody who isn't afraid to speak the truth. He is an inspiration and I wish that his voice stretched a little further than it does, more people need to hear this man's words. For sure.

"Because then I would be enough". What a powerful and sad statement that is. So many of us spend part, if not all, of our lives trying to be "enough". Trying to meet someone else's expectations of us. I'm almost 70, more time behind me than in front of me and I've finally decided to to live MY life, not someone else's version of what my life should be. Feels pretty darn good. God bless you.

I don’t think that’s exactly what was the point of this carefully edited video…. There appears to be a total absence of recognition (at least in these edited clips) that we must be fully aware of spiritual GOOD (God) vs. spiritual Bad (Satan). I already said this in another comment - but I think it bears repeating; There’s many, many people who believe & do very bad, very evil things as they “fearlessly follow their true self” For example, Adolf Hitler, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, (I could go on with 1000’s more) Our visions, and/or expectations for ourselves must be measured against a good spiritual standard. Otherwise, we’re just fooling ourselves…

I read of a preacher that was a guest speaker at a conference. He got up to speak some very serious and personal words, and the audience kept laughing. He was puzzled by the reaction, as his message was a very sobering message. When he concluded, he expressed to the man putting on the conference his confusion at such a frivolous reaction to a very solemn message. The gentleman explained to the preacher that there had been an error in the printing of the agenda for the night and the preacher had been put in the spot where a comedian had been scheduled to speak. Therefore, since the audience was expecting a comedian, they had prepared their hearts to be entertained and failed to grasp the sobering message given by the preacher. People have been accustomed to being entertained and amused by Mr. Carry, therefore, as you say, they may have missed his serious message. The word "amuse" means without thought. The book AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH explains how we have many means with which to occupy ourselves and distract us from what truly matters, to keep us from thinking. The main thing these amusements do is keep us from this truth, it is appointed unto man once to die, then after that THE JUDGMENT. We do not want to face the truth that there is GOD and we must all give an account to Him. Jesus Christ came the first time as a humble servant to save sinners. The next time He is coming as a Judge. Folks do not desire to retain the knowledge of God, therefore they suppress the truth in unrighteousness, and that suppression comes mainly through amusement.

I've tried several times to raise funds to support the causes I believe in. I've asked "friends" for their support, been sincere when I told them how much I appreciated their support, have bent over backwards for those I thought of as "friends" and it always ends the same way; with me being in a one sided relationship where the only one putting in an effort is me and/or being made fun of for being naive. After watching this I realize the way I approach things and associate with people has to change. If things continue the way the way they are, I'm going to fall into a deep depression and just give up. After recent events I'm already half way there. That's why I stopped to watch this video, to inspire myself to not give up. Thanks for lifting my spirits.

When Robin Williams passed I was heartbroken. In true cinematic fashion I had grown up with him all my life and connected not only with the characters he played but the person he often represented during the "real" moments. His legacy as a stand up comedian, sit-com giant, dramatic actor and person with a heart was only matched by Jim. The similarities bettween both were often mind blowing for me. The funnest guys to grace the screen in my life, also the most incredible dramatic actors and truly every time the person that shined through those characters was somone who was not afraid of being vulnerable that showed a true love for people and life. There's not a damn thing Jim hasn't done that I haven't stood in awe at the realness of what he brought to it.

Well, how do you want your body to get better and win agains your problems if you don't even give it a fighting chance?". People want a magic bullet....doctor, cure me of my depression. The fact is, it is a multi-faceted approach that includes medication as a tool, but more importantly, diet, exercise, sleep, positivity, goal setting, cognitive activities, and the like. This requires some executive capabilities, to make a plan and accomplish it. Sadly, not everyone has this talent....education is key. With an education we develop the skills necessary to manage our health problems, whether it is depression or diabetes or cancer. It's really easy to say, hey cheer up, or just get medicine. But it's not at all that simple.

7:05 I experienced this when I finally came to terms with myself and there was a two week period when I felt like I was high, there was so much peace within me finally coming out it was incredible. I knew at that moment that I would never be depressed again despite it having a hold over me for 29 years and I was completely right. Like Jim said, sadness still comes and goes but it just is nothing compared to the grips of depression and it does not have anywhere near the hold over me any more. I am a very different man than I was before those two weeks of bliss, even if it took so many years of struggle to get to that point it really feels like that was the start of my life as an enjoyable experience instead of what it once was. I am certainly not as eloquent as Jim so thank you very much for being able to put it into words so well. It always seems to be the case that to come to the realisation that love is all that matters in this world you have to have hit rock bottom and pieced yourself back together, and that the people that make us laugh the most are often the ones that feel the pain the most. Jim will never see this message but I will say it anyway. Jim is one of the very few people that feels genuinely kind, funny, and serious at the same time. I hold him as high as I did Robin Williams. There is not a single movie or interview or whatever I have heard Jim in that I didn't enjoy watching/listening to. He is a gem of a human being

Jim's words made me cry. It is true that fear keeps us small. We are not small. We are everything and everything is us! What you do to someone else, you do to yourself. Close your eyes and feel your spirit and then open them and walk in the moment. Each second you live, live for that moment and no other. Keep those negative thoughts buried and walk without fear!

Haha "walk in the moment" the majority of humans can't walk and chew gum at the same yet here they are absolutely certain that they are absolutely indispensable and if they buy a Jim Carrey T shirt they will live forever

@@edsnotgod more reason to spread the word about the way to happy moments in your life! Life is not about obtaining consistent happiness. It is about the highs and the lows and how you enjoy/learn from them. Like you, I wish a lot of -not only Americans- but all people to realize that we can make a difference by being kind, thoughtful, caring and sensitive to one another rather than focusing on our own self. Thanks for pointing out how sad it is when people walk through life trying to find happiness in so many other things than finding it within us. ❤️

@blue moon I cannot take credit for this statement :). I watch a lot of NDE (near death experiences on yt and I hear this a lot! We ARE all one. We are here to have an experience and to enjoy life but also to be kind to others. If you search for NDE (Near Death experiences) on YT, you will fall down a rabbit hole and when you emerge, you will never see life the same. What can it hurt? It is all about love and kindness. I wish that for you and for everyone reading this message. ❤️

This is so profound and particularly poignant to me. I am 52 and I was diagnosed with cancer this week. I am so scared. My husband and I just celebrated our 26th anniversary and I have an 11 year old daughter that I adopted at birth (because we couldn't have children and we weren't even trying to adopt because we knew we couldn't afford it but we're approached by a friend of a friend and through a lot of prayers and help we made it happen) and she is the best thing that has ever happened to us, we adore her. We just moved from Oregon (we were all born there and my husband and I were raised there) because we wanted our daughter to have her own home in a quiet and safe town (when we left Oregon someone had found syringes and heroin buried in the playground and we decided that was enough) so we took a giant leap out of love and bought our first home in rural South Dakota (we love it and our daughter is thriving with her entire 6th grade glass comprising of 6 kids). And all I have thought this week is we have worked so hard and taken this huge leap and now this. I have been so extremely sad but what Jim has said is so true. Taking that leap out of love for our daughter and leaving the fear behind is the right thing to do. It has paid off. I am going to do the same with this cancer. Thank you Jim

My sister got cancer and beat it back and it’s changed her life for the better and hopefully yours too xxx On last thing maybe I can help you by way showing telling you go to your local Freemasons and ask for anything you need write to them. Here in the UK 🇬🇧 we would help a family going through this . And Yes I am a Freemason and where here for people.

I love Jim Carrey's wisdom and ability to make so much sense and make people question their entire sense of self and existence, while also making them laugh and feel less shitty about themselves while doing so. Because he's essentially using himself as an example for what every other person goes through in life themselves, yet we rarely ever stop to truly address the absurdity of it all and point it out and he's basically saying "It's okay. I get it. We all get it. We can laugh about how ridiculous it all is and accept it and be better" I resonate with so much of what he talks about. I try to live by the same principles of understanding life and trying to exist in this world without losing myself to the pointless pressure that forces us all to wear masks and lose our individualities and hearts in some confusing struggle to find purpose and place and meaning. It's true that he says that thoughts are the true enemy when not channeled properly. A thought only has as much power as you give to it and you can become a slave to feeding them constantly. It is, however, very hard to stick to what you know deep down is the right way to live, unburdened of unnecessary self-imposed stresses and anxieties and stick to the true values of self-acceptance and self-love, and appreciation in its truest form, untainted by external influence or pressure. I do often falter and the influences do leak in every so often, but I also accept that too, because I'm human just like everyone else and nobody is perfect. People are naturally flawed and to falter and make mistakes and learning to build a constantly improving version of yourself on top of all of the mistakes is the only natural way to go through life and have a greater understanding and appreciation for it.
