I’ve just bought a v85 new with a stock (small) windscreen. Have to pick it up coming weeks. During my testride I’ve noticed lot’s of buffeting. I’m 1.88cm. Will this be mostly gone with the setup you have, travel screen with the additional winddeflector. What is the brand of the deflector ? Thanks for your great review, very informative. Ciao
@Kristisltu Жыл бұрын
Yes and no :) you are a bit smaller than me and should be ok with travel + additional clip on. If you have someone with a Givi screen - i would give that one a try better or go all in and get a Secdem screen. Its the same size as travel+addon but its more aerodynamic so gives less wind noise

Thank you for this very detailed review of your Moto Guzzi. I was surprised at your comment about the oil consumption that you're experiencing. I used to own an 850T and drove it "like an Italian on espresso". It was probably the most comfortable bike I ever owned and it sounded so good with Dunstall pipes. I wish I had never sold it to pay some bills. This is how I ended up subscribing. I still miss my 850T. However, I can confirm that my beautiful Guzzi did not consume oil. I don't know if this is now the new norm, but this seems excessive even for an air cooled engine. This makes me want to hold off now, because of the already small oil sump you mentioned. I would really like to know if all V85's are like this. My 850T kept plenty of oil in between changes. Changing the filter in the sump was a bit of a chore though.
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
850Ts are beautiful. Im actually hunting for one right now :) as for oil consumption, its normal if you heavily load the engine and do highway trips (2up riding with A TON of items on paniers). During normal riding i have not noticed any excessive consumption at all. One thing to note, if you would search for a used one, somehow 2019 and early 2020 models seems to be more prone to it. There were some part code changes in the engine mid 2020. But its still a thory as too few people have stated it at this point

Thank you for an excellent review. I love Moto Guzzi-I used to own a V11 Sport Ballabio in the United States-and nothing feels like a Guzzi. Those air-cooled transverse V-twins have a unique character that is enchanting and addictive. I got a chance to test the V85 last year and it was awesome, although I ended up with an Africa Twin. But I’m really thrilled to add a new 2021 V7 with the 850 engine when it becomes available.

.3L oil consumption every 300km, that's near excessive. especialy with only 1.8L of capacity. it has a low maintenance drive shaft but very high maintenance engine... So initially I liked the simplicity of air cooling, I was thinking that less components like no radiator, hoses and coolant means less problems. Also shaft drive means not having to lubricate the chain. But I apparently I was wrong, I will still have worries like oil level which is actually more important. Better stick with water cooling. And regarding the design, the more I look the more I think electronic display does not match this bike, it seems they did the easy solution "let's put a TFT and finish it because I am tired of designing". As Moto Guzzi with attention to detail I would expect more elaborate artistic instruments design even if it is electronic.

Guzzis have insane brake in periods and most of the owners say their bikes free up at around 20 000km mark. As per oil usage, this is likely an engine specific, as all of Guzzis eat quite a bit, but only in high RPM range ;)

In my country this bike, with the so called EVOCATIVE GRAPHICS is exactly the same price as the V-Strom XT. The new 1050 version with the cruise control. 12 500 euro. I'm not sure if the Suzuki is not the better option, being liquid cooled and being more popular model. Typically there are more aftermarket options for bikes that sell in greater numbers. And maybe the best deal is actually the 2020 V-Strom without XT styling. They do not go off-road anyway, so the XT is kind of gimmicky I believe. Being the "older" model it sells for 9800 euro here.
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын

How often do you have to top up the engine oil? How many kilometers before the engine oil level drops from maximum to minimum? I assume the bike has a check engine oil glass window. How many millilitres of oil is needed to refill back from min. to max. ?
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
Cant tell about mm. I would need to measure that first, but yes, theres a glass. If ure doing highway touring, i would top of with every full tank. But if u do t cruise at highway speeds and fully loaded - it berely consumes any. Done 2000km of city and country road drives and it did not consume anything at all. But on highway (120-130km/h 2up and loaded to the max) i was adding around 200-300ml with every tank. Its characteristic to Guzzi's but its also characteristic of low milage guzzi's. Should get a bit better in another 10k km :)

@@Kristisltu would be difficult to ride from Asia to Europe with such frequent refills. Any leak from the engine or the drive shaft, or any electric/electronic gremlins? How long does the battery last?
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
@@chong-kenglimdr8922 I suspect your average speed would be much lower, so there shouldnt be as many. As i've said, for country roads with speeds bellow 100 km/h - i have never refilled even a ml. No leaks and no other issues that i have encountered.

Good video. I have an FZ6 like the one in your garage :-) and I am looking for a touring bike for 2 up and the Guzzi is one of the contenders. I feel that in performance terms the V85 doesn't compare to the FZ6 as it is definitely not as exciting. But since I will use for long distance travel how does it compare to the FZ6 in terms of comfort?
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
It doesnt :) on fz6 i want to die after 100km, but on v85 im good to go for a full tank :) im 191cm and fz6 is a bit small for me for anything other than short city drive, while v85 super comfortable. For 2up they are absolutely incomparable. V85 is a much bigger bike

Get something smaller. Even though it is a fairly light bike, 500lbs can be intimidating for a beginner. Also, It is an expensive bike to trash around, You're better off with a 600cc dirt bike from the Japanese market for a year or so. Then move on to something special and exciting like the V85TT. One good thing about MG, their bikes are very forgiving and easy to ride. However, a beginner will always benefit from a cheap slow bike and some dirt roads. Cheers.

@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
@@stanokstanok9511 not really :) went on a long trip 2up and with fully loaded cases + additional stuff straped on the top through isotta holders. But bike performed quite good. Ofcourse, in a single lane road in such configuration overtaking someone requires some calculation in higher speeds, but lack of horsepower is compensated by torque and it just pulls as a tractor whatever u throw at it. In the city its most comfortable as all the power and torque is available at low rpms and gives a false impression that its faster than a sport bike :) Its not a sports tourer and high speeds fully loaded is not its area. By the way, when fully loaded and 2up it doesnt feel too planted at 145+ km/h. So keep that in mind ;)

@@bicikla_amuzo My V9 bobber consumes NO oil. Air cooled engines take some time to get broken in because of the loose tolerances. Sometimes 10,000km is the point where everything is settled in. The addition of synthetic oil in modern engines contributes to the longer break-in period. I just bought a new V85TT and Im planning to break in the engine the "Italian" way.

Hej Kris, thanks for your review of the v85TT. As an owner of such a bike I can relate to your findings. There are only two thing I find e little strange: That you only have one position on your heated grips, my bike has three, low medium und high, and the high oil consumption. Maybe you should consult your dealer. Greatings from Switzerland, Thanks again, very enjoyable. Mike
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
Under normal conditions it doesnt use oil. But go for an extended period of highway driving with speeds 120 km/h and up - it will consume oil. This is more evident as the temps increse :) its a normal feature for guzzi's yet the consumption varies a bit based on the oil brand used, but in general - they will drink oil if u push them. As per grips, u really have 3 positions? Are your's original grips or aftermarket? And what is your bike's delivery date? Maybe you have a newer firmware installed....
@MikeB-iq9sx3 жыл бұрын
@@Kristisltu Today I had a brief chat with my dealer about my rear brake cylinder and asked him if he was aware of high oil consumption. His answer was that it depends on the individual engine and driven speed; up to 0.7 l / 1000 km could be possible, anything higher is critical. I have driven 2500 km since the last service - no oil refill required. He recommended that I have a bottle of 10w60 with me for long trips. My bike is a summer 2020 version and has three positions for heated grips as mentioned earlier. It's the original Moto Guzzi heater
@Kristisltu3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeB-iq9sx given the fact that the bike only takes 1.8ltr, that 0.7ltr per 1000km consumption is not a comfortable number :) on my trip i probably had that mark.
