One thing we did on our FSAE cars back when we used the CBR600RR was to mount the clutch lever on the back of the shifter (closer to the driver). Then to upshift, you pull the clutch lever back (which doesn't engage the clutch, but does moves the shifter back), and to downshift you push the clutch lever forward, which engages the clutch and then shifts down. Just a thought.

Yes the sump arrangement is critical to have correct. Many times one may have failed for reasons yet not crystal clear? But it is a fact you'll benefit from a guaranteed installation, and not have to suffer another catastrophe.. potentially! Even in motorcycles, I myself experienced broken engines due to oil starvation. So you bought a sweet setup from somebody. All hail the algorithm. 😂 LoL .

I thought you would have gone with a Honda Rebel engine. Inline 2 cylinder for plenty of thumping noise and legendary Honda reliability. As for the oil starvation problem, you could make a secondary tall oil cylinder that would get the oil from the pan, push it through a long tube to the top of the oil cylinder and put the pick-up at the bottom of the cylinder. That way you won't have any problem with sloshing in the corners.

At the time I never gave it much thought but I ride a Honda ST1300 and after watching your video, it seemed to me that the engine from an ST1300 would be a good candidate for your car. It's a V4 so is lower revving than your preference and honestly makes less power than the engine you chose but I believe it has better low-end torque. Since this engine has been in production for motorcycles since 2003 I expect that they would be plentiful and probably quite affordable.

Using something like a K1200 engine in the speeder? Long stroke high torque but they can spin pretty high. Oh, wait. Just remembered you had a tiny displacement limit. I guess I'll definitely be watching this space.

I had an original S600 and 4000rpm was pretty much what you needed to get off the line. Changing gear at 9000 was fun but how cool is going to 12-13k with the modern engine. Nice. - Great project.

I never got to participate in the engine selection list but I was thinking about the ST-1300 engine. I know it's a complex engine but I still like it.

FYI - if you want to keep hydraulic operation for your clutch, you can fit a Magura retrofit kit. You'd need to switch to a Magura master cylinder, but it is an option.

Great series of videos! Have you considered modifying the the mounting angle of the throttle bodies? That is, space the ITBs outward and angled down towards the crankcase with tubular adapters. This would have the possible benefits of: longer runner length, more room for a larger airbox, and eliminate the hole in the bonnet. I believe the added runner length coupled with a bigger airbox would help engine response off the bottom. Thank you.

You should try and fit a quick shift sensor into your new transmission linkage for fast clutchless upshifts.

Another great engine would be an old Yamaha XJ600. It's an old 600ccm engine that has a good low end torque and a middle high rev limiter. The useabel rev range is from around 1000rpm to 11000rpm. But stock it only has 44.1299kw. It is one of the most reliable engines that i know. Sadly i only now saw that you were looking for a new engine

my friends and I build a shifter kart with a $400 ebay 6th gen vfr800 because it was cheaper than any other engine trans combo we could find at the time.

CBR600RR = 14500 IIRC - ran one with my ECU in an FSAE car - awesome fun though only revving it to 12 because with their manifold and fueling design the power dropped off steeply above like 9k despite AFR and fueling remaining constant - poor atomisation of the fuel from port injectors FTL. And it's true to the model name of your car, too. But less torque and more work and less power - you made the right choice :-)

You were not the first to say you got a BMW because you couldn't afford a Honda: I drove several 90's K1100's before finally being able to afford a 90's Goldwing, the bike that made me want to be a biker... I have always thought though that BMW makes a bike for every occasion to ride a bike, but Honda does that too for every budget. It's just that the Goldwing is the exception to that rule.

I have to be honest: I have an idea of BMW boxer swaping some shitbox for few years now. I know that this is stupid idea. I know that BMW bike engines aren't really good, but I love boxers and idea of small boxer twin makes me happy.

You could probably get a complete drysump setup on one of the Nascar parts liquidator websites from something like a Quarter Midget for less than $1000 including pump, tank hoses and etc else..
