Suzuki pairs value, versatility, and performance in the liter-sized superbike segment with its 2021 Suzuki GSX-R1000R ($17,749). This up-spec GSX-R benefits from upgraded suspenders, a slick-shifting electronic quickshifter, and a couple of other worthwhile upgrades that make it more competent on and off track.
--
When it comes to outright street-riding comfort, few sportbikes ride as well as Suzuki GSX-Rs. And that trend continues with its 1000R. It’s a very slim motorcycle-especially for an inline-four. The seat is well supported and the reach to the clip-on style controls isn’t too aggressive. We like the position of the rider’s footpegs, which are neither too high, nor too low. It would be nice if this GSX-R had foot control adjustment like its GSX-R600 and 750 duo. One change we bemoan is its 0.4-gallon-smaller 4.2-gallon fuel tank.
Tap the starter button and the GSX-R fires to life with a unique growl. Despite employing a conventional inline-four firing order, the engine offers signature character unlike others in its class. We especially appreciate its meaty intake roar and whiny, high-tech-sounding exhaust note. Suzuki offers an ingenious variable valve timing solution that helps give its four-cylinder the best of both worlds.
Peppy bottom-end bark morphs into thick car-passing midrange oomph. Top-end power is strong too, but not quite as powerful as competitors in its class. Still, it’s got enough giddyap to get the blood pumping. We’d estimate a horsepower figure in the mid-160s at the 190-series Bridgestone Battlax RS11 tire. Fuel-mileage-wise, we measured an average of 36 mpg.
An early leader in sportbike electronics (the ’97 GSX-R750 was the first Japanese sportbike with fuel injection), this GSX-R retains its S-DMS adjustable power mode setup. Ride-by-wire throttle integration affords throttle control adjustment that’s neatly integrated into each power mode. Full-power mode A was our favorite.
Ten-way-adjustable IMU-powered traction control is also present, however its programming feels more rudimentary compared to other contemporary setups from Japan and Europe. The 1000R also adds launch control to its arsenal, but we didn’t test it this time. Wheelie and engine-brake control are absent from its electronics suite, as is cruise control. Heated grips would be a nice upgrade too considering how roadworthy this Gixxer is.
The slick-shifting up-and-down electronic quickshifter, on the other hand, performs splendidly allowing you to row through the six-speed gearbox instantly.
In terms of agility, the 445-pound GSX-R1000R impresses with its maneuverability. It steers more sharply than its predecessor while still offering a high degree of stability. Equally impressive is the lofty level of rear grip that the chassis affords. The upgraded Balance Free suspension components follow the road more accurately than the older hardware on the basic GSX-R. Still, the front end isn’t as magical feeling as Team Green’s offering (employs similar front suspension).
The R model’s stainless steel front brake lines are a much-needed improvement and help mitigate brake fade-a feature that has plagued Suzuki GSX-Rs. We also appreciate the rear brake’s strong, responsive feel. Full-time ABS with cornering functionality mitigates instability during braking.
A bright LED headlamp throws a deep spread of light during night rides. The R’s LED positioning lights are also a nice touch. However, because it employs an IMU, we wish Suzuki added a cornering light function to boost visibility during fast-paced night rides through curvy stretches of road. Keeping tabs on vehicle settings is a 5.5-inch backlit LCD. Despite being only one color, the display is functional and easy to read day and night. However, the display could be larger.
Despite not employing a truly modern electronics package, the GSX-R1000R continues to be one of our favorites due to its versatility and ease of use. We’re big fans of its punchy powertrain and capable chassis that’s as adept on track as it is off of it. Considering its competitive price tag and fine craftsmanship, there’s no doubt Suzuki drives a hard bargain with its GSX-R1000R.

I love this bike. Had the legendary K5 for many years. Leaving the dealership this thing felt like a plush cadillac. I was so use to a really stiff suspension. I drove roughly 2 miles before hitting the freeway. The first time I hammered the throttle it just made me laugh so hard. Kind of a strange reaction. It pulled so hard I just couldn't stop smiling. Been a life long Suzuki fan boy. I wouldn't even think about selling this bike for anything else. I love it

First time I rode a Suzuki its road manners blew me away. I do motorcycle photography as my full time job, so I have hundreds of machine to compare them too. Yet, its always the same. I have friends that ride many more powerful expensive bikes, but after riding the Suzuki you always hear "HOLY SHIT that is COMFORTABLE! It's smooth and has awesome midrange". Yeah its not the lightest, nor the fastest. Regardless, most of them hit the nail on the head. The road isnt a racetrack, and even the most sporty riders spend 5% of their time on a bike actually on a track. Even my friend that rides a Vstar 1100 cruiser told me he possibly would rather take my GSX650F over distance, even compared to his V Twin cruiser. Somebody rode one to the Arctic Circle and back 1200 miles with no issues. Long live Suzuki and their love for sport and daily rideability without the fancy electronic bullshit for horrible riders. *update- Now on a 2015 GSXR-750 and I'm only more reassured of my words. Holy Cow.

Suzuki had the first 16 valve engine's. Twin swirl combustion Chambers that atomized the air fuel mixture well for good torque. Of course the horse power was good back then with multi valve. They were known for having good bottom ends cranks and crank case's. They were made to last too. Suzuki fan here. GS 1000E GS 1150ES, great Bike's. 1150 had great torque and horse power then, always loved the Suzuki Busa, great drag racing motor better than Kawi to me. I actually worked on a drag racing team, I've also owned Kawasaki and Yamaha too, they all had their design Niche's. Brother had Honda's. I've ridden a whole lot of bike's not everyone but a lot.

"Best" is relative & subjective to some degree but purely from a specification perspective, it's a little heavier, less powerful & has inferior electronics compared to the class leader(s). Although it's small margins & none of that bothers me personally, but it's made to go quick & basically it's not the quickest. New one due this year supposedly so should be an improvement.

It’s honestly the best modern Japanese liter bike. Fireblade has a stronger motor but I prefer the suspension on the gsxr
@jonathondavis170
@jonathondavis170 2 жыл бұрын
You can make the GSXR-1000R just as capable with the endless aftermarket. The engine comes so watered-down out of the box - after fireblade-type mods with ecu and exhaust etc., this MECHANICAL VVT Engine will EASILY battle ANY engine out there! Guess that's why they are so competitive in GPs, even though their Factory machine is considerably different! 💪

2022 GSX-R1000 (non double "R") has cruise control. Wish it had those spot lights the RR has. BIke is a Great all rounder! Good for drag races, its perfectly balanced to wheelie, Great on the track, and smooth on the streets. If it could only go off-road! :) j/k Love this bike! Rode one of these from Phoenix to Salt Lake CIty, long trip, and it was surprisingly good for a sport bike (would not have dreamed to do that with the R1). Was looking for a new bike and this Jixer is just amazing!

Those flashers are old school in Europe the bike comes with nice small Led ones .The exhaust is lovley ha ha ha but im sure you can order one with a Yoshi from the factory.I love my 2020 model but the dash could have been colour and cruise contol would also have been nice .I traded my Yam mt10sp in for the gixxer and no regrets the mt was like a tractor compaired to this bike .

2 things make it worth it; that one touch start feature and the way the engine automatically revs up as you start off in 1st gear; PRICELESS! 2 things still that make it a bummer; no cruise control and mono color display 🥺

Wrong! The GSXR 1000 originally debuted in 2001. I know because I bought one brand new when it came out. Pretty sure it was also the first fuel injected 1000 CC sport bike!

Suzuki on GSXR L7+ made the perfect package. Gsxr is made to do everything and i mean everything very well! it has been redisigned, but also keep the good Suzuki heritage (so did the Busa). no it's not perfect, no it's not the ultimate track bike or drag bike, no it hasn't the best electonics, but it's genuine Suzuki and that's why we love it!❤️ anyone who want's 100% of one of the above features, buy's R1, s1000rr, ZX10 or maybe 1000rr. if someone want's to ride on public road, ride on track, go on trip then definately the GSXR is the perfect bike!❤️

This exact model used with hardly any miles are ridiculously low priced for what they are, It's also good that suzuki put a cheap exhaust on the bike because everyone throws there standard exhaust in a box in the shed or at least they should do that, All this bike really needs is a full system aftermarket stacks and a flash plus removal of any mechanical restrictions

Maybe instead of having too much electronics, bikes like this should have two adjustable features: 1. Adjustable handle bars 2. Adjustable foot pegs So that the rider can make handle bar high/low. Not sure why don’t see adjustable handle bars on these bikes.

I like Adam's reviews. They're very complete and informative. Camera angle is so important in making the video part watchable and too often here, the camera is too low. Especially as he works a curvy section 3/4 of the way through this one.
