Moana 2 - Movie REVIEW - Better or As Bad As Frozen 2!?

Maui wanted more of him in Moana 2!! I really loved Maui’s development, and I’d love that he kept his development while they expanded on it. He felt like a loving older brother and a teacher. For Moana, she was great. They expanded on her character, and nothing feels like they backtracked, which was great. She's still very adventurous, and *spoilers*, I believe she’s a demigod now, which is going to be interesting for future sequels. And if you look at how many tattoos Maui got, maybe it could show future advances or advancements Moana could make.

So, my favorite characters in this movie were obviously Maui and Moana. Heihei, Kele was my fourth very good character; he just reminded me of me from time to time, aside from not liking singing. Moana's sister was slightly annoying, but she was a cool little sister. What interests me more is what future stories you could tell with that little sister to see what she goes on to do-if it’s good, evil, or somewhere in the middle, just adding a different layer to their characters.

But what I rate this movie is about an 8.5 out of 10. I personally like this movie more than the first one. However, I do feel that since this movie was a series first, and then a movie, there's a slight bit of condensation. It looks like they’re saving a villain for the next movie or potential sequel if this movie does well, which is slightly disappointing. If that doesn’t come to pass, I might revise my rating, but for now, I’m feeling an 8.5 out of 10. If I were to count all my problems, it might go down to a seven, losing three points, or even a 6.5 out of 10. But currently, I’m not feeling like lowering it; I'm okay with the rating I currently have.

Disney sequels have always been hit or miss; and even though it may be common place now to blame the Disney machine on the popularity of streaming services, remember, the sequel treatment back in the VHS era. Projects like Aladin 2, Atlantis 2, Lion King 2, etc were all made to garner interest in upcoming or potential tv cartoons. And some of the projects that started out as tv shows got the can and were reworked and released as direct to video movies. This can be easily seen in the writing and animation quality. I am glad Moana 2 is shaping out to be a good film on it's own. At least it's not Cars 2 level of bad.

I like the hook kinda looking like a 2. Moana is some huge nostalgia for me. My daughter isn't exactly the bubbly little girl she was but when we watch the film it takes me back to when she sang the songs and wanted to be a princess. 😢

@runisa yeah it makes me sad too. But then I realize I could have never had those memories at all and it makes me happy that I ever lived that time. I hope she likes this new one we havnt seen it yet.

A bunch of NPCs like Raya and the Last Dragon. Traveling to a secluded location with other people like Frozen 2. I already know where this is going

Story and animation was much better in this movie than the first. I liked the expansion. Music is a step below the original but it’s been 8 years and LMM has probably already peaked as far as his talent goes (Encanto his last was his magnum opus) Myself and my kids thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The heartfelt moments I really felt too. People are being way too harsh on this film because of comparisons of the original. Which I remember not a lot of people were really singing its praises at the time either. I give it a solid 7/10

The intro of this review was absolutely nerve wrecking for a full 2:43 . Why? Glad to know it was good; however….Wicked is first on for this Thursday, Moana 2 is second and I’m not sure about gladiator 2. Thanks for the review.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with some claims you make. The characters from the first movie do not evolve, they stay the same they were at the end of the first movie until the end of this sequel. The new ones have a one-scene where they are relevant and serve nothing during the rest of the movie; they don't develop any kind of relationship either, not between each other, not with the main cast. The stakes of the situation is non-existent. In the previous one, the people would die if Moana doesn't succeed, while in this one the stakes of failing is... staying just as happy as they were at the end of the first movie. All is good in the island, they can go around, they just don't have neighbours (which didn't seem to bother them before?). Idk, I don't want to get into too many spoilers, but it felt extremely bland. I liked the songs though.

The stakes were not as high as the first movie but there was still the threat of Slight spoiler: the island dying in isolation.

@Cousgoose what do you mean by "dying"? They've lived for many many generations singing about how good it all has been until the crops were dying in the first movie. Nowhere did they ever mentioned any kind of loneliness, it's a whole island full of people.

@Cousgoose My point is: since when is that a problem? They've always been isolated (based on the chief stones, for many generations) and it has never been an issue. They are a whole island full of people, now they can travel and settle in new island ("a brand new island everywhere we go", based on the song of the ancestors). They can literally multiply and travel, and keep doing so forever. It was the point of the first movie. But suddenly they are lonely if they don't meet the people they never knew existed? It's just a weird no-problem they created for the movie as if it was always there.

Totally disagree. This was much worse than Frozen 2. Frozen 2 was a disappointment compared to the first, but it still had memorable music and at least tried to tell an original and emotional story (to mixed results). Moana 2 felt like it didn’t even try. I do like where the story went at the end, but 2/3 of the movie felt like filler. And half the jokes were just call backs to the first movie-the first sequel is wayyyy too early to lean that hard on nostalgia.
