The noise from snow plow will scare a moose. We had never been to Alaska when we moved up driving a 1983 33-foot RV. Border patrol asked up about guns we told them we had a pellet gun and 4 bows, told them right where they were. After the inspection, they told me that they could not find the pellet gun. It seems like with some of the people who do move up here they are leaving within 3 years. We are working on 6 years counting. A lot of people can't grasp how big and rugged Alaska really is. Hey, thanks for the shout out.

They probably created some of those shows just to try to increase the state pop. I can't imagine taking a little boat up from Washington. But I did enjoy taking a ferry down. it's nice to let someone else drive for a while. We went up the AK highway and down the Ferry system and into Canada some going down. I like the taxi style boats where the front is a ramp for loading or unloading. I also know that the water was rough enough while on the ferry where it was hard to walk to the bathroom from the bunk. It's like trying to walk against the wind in Scotland to get to the pub. The water was so calm by I think Petersburg.

Some people just don't think things through. They see things on the television and think hey, I can do that. In reality, no, no you *can't* do that. As you know, most firearms you can easily bring into Canada with the proper documentation. Lying to the border officials and then getting caught, especially with a firearm, yep, you are banned for life from entering the country. Similar to Canadians going into the US with a 'forgotten' joint in their pocket. There should be a bloody documentary dedicated to this dude!! What a story guys. Absolutely HILARIOUS!! You got it, a well researched travel plan and a where to stay rent vs buying is a great way to go about it. I have just started watching your show from Australia recently. I enjoy watching it. I especially enjoy the fireside talks. I have always wanted to go to Alaska for a trip. I am going to Canada next year but because of the money exchange rate will have to skip visiting this time. Hopefully someday I will make it. You have commented that in Alaska people say ‘go out into the bush’ that is a common term used in Australia. People that live in the bush here they call bushies. I enjoy watching the exploits of your dog . I have over 40 years travelled a fair bit to North America. You go crabbing and fishing I used to do a lot of crabbing and fishing. We have a crab here called a Mud Crab. Years ago I had a fairly big gun collection mostly all old military guns and some old hand guns. I do not have any any more as I sold the all years ago. The laws on guns are relatively complicated so no longer worth collecting. There is a you tube channel you may be interested in called Forgotten Weapons. He gives talks on old rare guns. I enjoy watching it.
@AnAlaskaHomestead5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Norman. Australia is on my bucket list of places to visit. Hopefully one day you can make it to Alaska but Canada and Alaska have a lot of similar climates. Bushiest!? I like that term. I heard Australia had a gun buy back years ago and the laws are very strict. American news is hung up on “Assault rifles” but the truth is more homicides are committed with knifes, hammers and hands than they are with “assault weapons”. Hand guns make up the majority of gun homicides and the news never mentions them. Well the best to you in your future travels. Have a great day.

Gravity fed and auto knifes are restricted. If you plan on making a trip through Canada there is a lot of reading involved to ensure you don’t get something confiscated and fined. Hey Richard, we are thinking about doing a video on how to get/ buy property here. It really depends on which area you are looking at. Here in the southeast you can get a couple of acres for $20k-40k on an island or you could spend the same and get some remote land in the interior between 10-40 acres. It really boils down to how close you are to a big city.

Is there any area in particular you recommend looking into as far as living off grid goes.
@AnAlaskaHomestead4 жыл бұрын
We love living in the southeast but Kenai and Matanuska Valley area are both nice places I would look at.

We live in Palmer and love it! Surrounded by beautiful mountains. Some people don’t like the wind but there are places you can find that are out of the wind tunnel in the Valley:)

Hey guys, love your videos and the way you guys present the content! One question that came to mind was insurance. How does insurance cover off grid cabins and do insurance companies pay special attention to off grid cabins?
@AnAlaskaHomestead4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. It is harder to find insurance on off grid places. Also since we live on a remote island, there is no fire department, which seems to be a red flag for insurers. The other big farro is most places don’t like wood stoves being the only source of heat. With all that being said we have found companies that will insure our cabin. It runs about $2000 a year. Not the cheapest but it’s an option, especially if you are financing and meet to have insurance. Thanks for watching.
@worldtraveler78064 жыл бұрын
My Alaska Dream yeah I suppose being on an island doesn’t help. I didn’t even consider the finance part of it but indeed that would force insurance to be taken. I suppose not having insurance would need additional preparedness to cover any incident, perhaps even having a secondary smaller cabin setup (guest cabin) as a fallback plan in case something happens. I’m looking to visit Alaska and find my dream location, I think it’s a great idea to come in both summer and winter months.
@AnAlaskaHomestead4 жыл бұрын
World Traveler I agree, visiting during winter and summer is a great idea.

So I'm new to your channel and plan to visit Alaska sometime in late july, I plan on moving to one of the cities and find a job, even if it means just doing labour general labor but that story is crazy. I would have at the very least started by renting and getting acclimatized to Alaska, this dude sounds full hearty and crazy. Who puts their family through that type of ordeal... the things people do on a whim is crazy.

What is "the lower 49"?
@AnAlaskaHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Lower 48 is the continental United States. If we said lower 49 it was jokingly including Hawaii.

My ex offered to buy me an inflatable kayak if I'd paddle over, walk ashore with an axe and saw, no gun required because the people are all friendly, so she says, and told me to build a treehouse just 10 feet off the ground on Admiralty Island. She said she'd stop by for a visit after I got all the berry vines in the area to fruit for a couple of seasons. And she said salmon bones and heads were the best way to help berry vines thrive and suggested I get a couple hundred pounds and keep them near my treehouse to make mulch. My ex is so smart about that stuff.

His problems started when he bought land site unseen. I live in Texas and am looking at a property near Fairbanks and I don't even intend to purchase before I have seen it. Granted i know it's an off grid lot and intend to put a prefab cabin on it and live majority off grid. I likely wont even move up there until I have a building up there and a residential address
@AnAlaskaHomestead5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a good idea to At least visit Alaska first before moving here and buying sight unseen can be risky.

We are indeed. I go into what are plans are and what others could do if they didn’t have relatives that lived in town. Unfortunately we don’t live for ever so these two scenarios will be what we do when her parents pass. That’s a long way off though. 👍

The southeast doesn’t get very many earthquakes. You’d have to check with Canada to see what’s allowed to be brought through their country.

You're covered medically because you're a military veteran, thanks for your service! Its hard for just anyone to pick up and go because medical coverage is needed. How do people without medical coverage just pick up and go off grid? Walk into a hospital and apply for medicaid??? Im curious

I honestly don’t know, other than pay for their own insurance. I’ll have to ask our old neighbors what the did.
