One under-mentioned thing about cases that fit the Missing 411 criteria - None of the people who are found alive after (mostly kids, from my readings), ever remember details of what happened afterward. The kid is never like, "I went for a walk, but then I couldn't find my way back, so I just kept walking and looking for everyone. I was walking for days, and I was so hungry and scared and cold, and I cried so hard." It's always "Oh, the animals brought me to this place and fed me for a few minutes, then you guys came and found me" or "We were hiding from the ape men and then we fell asleep inside of a log and when we woke up, the little people were looking at us from the bushes and it was really funny" or "I don't know how I got up here. All I remember is walking right here before I saw you". I get that kids can't always process traumatic events, but by the same token not every child is going to react to a situation the same way, so to me it is a bit strange that none of them have ever been able to provide any kind of cogent narrative timeline.

I think sometimes it’s a matter of not being able to comprehend what happened and not being able to explain it. Like one story Mr. Ballen told a guy went camping with his kids (2 & 4) and his brother and he got shot in the head while sleeping and when the brother went to see why the one daughter was crying and not being comforted both the two and for year old kept saying “wet, wet” when they saw their uncle. They were sitting in a pool of their fathers blood. They didn’t have the words or comprehension skills to really be able to say what happened. I think that a lot of kids may just not really understand what is or was happening so they can’t tell us or it’s a lot scarier and creepier than it needs to be because their magic brains fill in the gaps they can’t figure out Edited to say I do also think strange things happen in the woods that don’t have a comprehensible answer so that’s true too as well but imo kids just see the world through story books and sometimes to be able to handle what they’ve been through they make things into fairytales (coming from someone who as a child used maladaptive daydreaming and fantasy books as an escape from childhood trauma and made my life a movie plot line in my head to deal with what I was going through)

not all, I remember reading one about a little girl who remembered the entire time (I think it was 4 days) and said that something like she accidentaly got lost and while roaming the forest she found another girl so she called that other girl and after playing that other girl helped her survive the night, find what to eat and find the way out, she says that it was an imaginary friend but it didnt make sense how an imaginary friend knew survival tricks as what to eat and were to sleep as well as the way out, it was certainly possible that it was an imaginary friend created to cope with the fear of being alone and that the decisions she took were by luck the right ones, by luck she chose the right type of berries to eat and not some that were poisonous, by luck she chose the best places to sleep in which neither cold or predators wouldnt find her, and by luck she found a way out which wasnt easy since she got out by going through the forest a long way and not by going back to the relatively near place she initially where she initially entered, but she was in the forest for like 5 days I think and she was like 4 years old I think

Stay on the trail. There is a situation where deep holes(could be mine shaft, abandoned well, or just a big hole) get filled in with branches and leaves over the years. They look like solid ground, but may give way if you step on them and then down you go, swallowed up by the earth. Tree wells are another similar hazard that happen in winter.

No, he has done a great job cherry picking information about cases that are easily explained so he can con people like you out of money to buy his books and movies. The guy is a complete joke in the search and rescue field. He has had seasoned search and rescue professionals get up and leave his talks because he is so ill informed on the subject. All of these cases can be explained by people making mistakes, animal attacks, and other people doing harm on the one missing. It isn’t Bigfoot or UFOs, it is just the fact that the wilderness is a very dangerous place, even for the most experienced outdoorsman, and it also a great place to hide a body.

Seemed like a guy making wild assumptions about what happened. 2nd documentary “The Hunted” was actually a decent film cause you had actual search and rescue teams and law enforcement giving their experiences about these things. Supposedly David and John here are going to collaborate about certain cases. David made a video about that and came off like a total douche bag. Like he was the morally superior between himself and Mr Ballen. Think David is a bit jealous because Ballen does such a better job at telling stories. Barbara's case is baffling. How can someone just disappear in plain sight? Even if a wild animal grabbed her, she would've let out a scream or yelled out. If not, she decided to disappear on her own, and start a new life someplace else. Who knows really.

We have these disappearances in our culture too. I am from the North-east of India and we have the same phenomenon where people just go missing in the forest and are never seen again or are seen miles and miles away and nit remember anything. They traversed huge, rugged, impossible to climb or go through places with ease and no injuries but a few scratches and are always hungry. I've known, I believe all grown-ups in my state know this. In our language, the entities that carry(we say they're carried) these people are called," Khaw Mu," which I believe is some kind of a spirit of the jungle/forest. It feeds those people with berries, larvae, sometimes tree barks, brings them to rivers to drink, carry them through huge/high rock faces, cliffs etc. which they would never be able to go through even with ropes, gears. There is an almost exact similarity between what we experienced in our culture and what these people in the US went through. I believe its the same kind of entities or spirits that does this. Crazy to think that we have similar experiences though far apart in distance, culture and places.

So far I have heard three stories from Mr. Ballen where children somehow travel many miles alone ending up in complete solitude claiming that they saw animals near them. This reminds me of my cousin who disappeared at the age of five for three days in a mountain. Everyone searched for him and a man miles away who didn’t know my cousin was missing, found him surrounded by plants with sharp spikes which no child could have been able to get into on his own. People rumored that it was a witch that had taken my cousin and placed him in the center of these plants. I recently asked my cousin (now an adult) what happened and he says he doesn’t remember.

There IS an explanation for the shoeless man walking away and not reacting. When people suffer from hypothermia, they become completely lost and bewildered. They are 'out of it' and don't react to people talking or yelling at them. You have to literally grab them and pull them back with you to get them to stop walking. This is crucial because they're spiraling down into loss of body functions with the lowering of their core temperature. I saw many survival videos and they always pointed out the 'signs' of hypothermia and one of them is just the person walking and walking and not responding to people 'like they are in a daze'. I figure he walked away and off a cliff somewhere and his remains were eaten by predators.
@jj_hoolio
@jj_hoolio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and taking shoes off while suffering from hypothermia is called paradoxical disrobing. However, the searcher said the campfire had still been warm when they found it. Seems strange to have been by a fire long enough for it to just barely burn out, then leave the campsite literally minutes before a searcher finds it. Very strange timing.

When I was out training for wilderness firefighting, a guy stumbled out of the woods when we were going down a trail. He said he'd been lost in the woods for 3 days, seemed really happy to find us, he tagged along with us as we were heading back at the time. We offered him some water & a MRE. I'll never forget how relieved he sounded when he saw us and came over. This was way out in the woods near Mount Hood, Oregon.

Walked into the woods and was never seen again. They found her tracks which randomally just stopped like she flew away. The whole night she was telling people "I can fly" you can look up her case her name is maureen Leianuhea aka anu kelly missing from cougar washington. As a veteran in the U.S. Army, who camped many of time when I was younger, it always stuns me when people go camping, hiking or hunting alone, or hike/hunt around dusk. Going out in the wilderness in suboptimal circumstances is setting yourself up for failure (injury or death). I haven't hiked in awhile but if I do, I will have a whistle, a fixed blade camp knife (like an Esee Izula or Mora), a full sized Swiss Army Knife with a saw, knife, a fully charged phone, a map, a compass, trail markers, Bic lighter, firestick, food, water, emergency blanket, and will be dressed appropriately. I would also never hike by myself, not only because I am female, but because its just foolish to risk your life like that.

Every story you’ve told about hunting, hiking, camping etc has taught me to never be an avid hunter, hiker, camper and god forbid if you know the land incredibly well, be going there for years, you’re definitely going to disappear. It seems the people who never hunt, hike or camp seem to be found safe with nothing wrong but if you’re an “avid” any of these, you’re done.

The third story reminds me of a missing persons case which took place in the city. A woman - normal, had a job, house, fiancé etc. - disappeared while heading to the bank. Her car was found in the parking lot, but no sign of her. Her fiancé was being interrogated, her family was suspicious, etc... A *month* later she was found living among the homeless, looking homeless herself. She didn't know who she was, and doctors found evidence of head trauma from around the time she'd disappeared. They'd found some of her blood or DNA on a large rock or broken wall in the bank parking lot she'd disappeared from. They figured she must have been assaulted, hit in the head and that was how she lost all sense of who she was and ended up being homeless. I wonder if that last guy could have endured something similar. And I wonder how many homeless people started out as just regular people who got hit in the head and forgot who they were...

The last story of the shoeless man could be a case of a sudden episode of schizophrenia, sometimes adults that are prompt to this mental condition aren't even aware and all of the sudden can get confused, hear voices, etc, and easily get lost. Actually many homeless are people lost from their families that could have a mental condition. I know a story of a young man in Tijuana that went out for a run, he was perfectly normal, and he disappeared. Six months later, he was recognized as looking like a homeless al dirty in the street, he even had dreadlocks in his hair, the family took them to a mental hospital and he got fully recovered.

Its wild how easily you can get turned around. I went hunting with my dad and young son one morning, we had marked the trail to the blind and knew the area well, and even though it was still dark we parked pretty close to where we were hunting, and it was pretty much a straight shot. It was maybe 1000m walk to the blind. The trail we had marked was through the woods, but it wasn't super dense or brushy. Easy woods. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to get to the blind because it was my son's first hunting trip. All of a sudden the marks we had set up were just gone and we were like in a completely foreign area and the brush was suddenly so thick we could hardly walk through. We stopped right there and went back to try to find the last marker, because they were so close together we couldn't have been more than 10 feet from it. Nothing. It was like everything around us was brand freaking new. We ended up in a huge clearing I had never seen trying to make our way back in the dark to our marked trail. My dad was saying how this doesn't make any sense because it looked like a clearing he'd seen pretty far from where we were when he was scouting the place, but it felt like we had only been walking for maybe 800m at that point. After what felt like 15 minutes, but was actually close to an hour, we were in yet another clearing with the sun coming up. We just sat down and I remembered I had dropped a pin on the blind on my Google maps. Duh. I opened it up and we were SO FAR from the blind it was ridiculous. We had actually managed to somehow circle all the way around it and were like a mile away. My main focus had been keeping eyes on my son (having heard enough missing 411 stories) I was physically holding on to his jacket collar, while my dad led us through the briar and impossibly thick trees. At one point, because I had the map on my phone, I went a little bit ahead (maybe 10 feet) with my son and when a turned around my dad was just gone. The sun was up at this point. What the HELL. I called out for him and he was like 30 feet away in the wrong direction. We found the blind and sat there for a while but I'm sure whatever noise we made scared any deer away, so we started back for the truck after about an hour and a half. On the walk back, because the sun was up, kept an eye out for the missing markers so we could replace them so we wouldn't get lost again the next day. My dad figured some teens or something probably moved them as a joke. THEY WERE ALL THERE. Plain as day. We couldn't even find the super dense area we stumbled upon. Just the same easy peasy forest we expected.
