I really read this as unrequited love, this man is so confused as to how everything around him is accompanied but the one person he loves won’t accept him/doesn’t return his feelings. I don’t get a sense of ‘pressure’ at all, I really feel moved when I read this, I sense a hurt emotion, it feels really heart wrenching and bare

Am I the only one that thought this poem was about Shelly longing after a girl who doesn’t love him back?
@milliee33207 жыл бұрын
Interesting point about the two verses. You can also see that the two stanzas are used to further enforce the speakers dominant idea of nothing being single. The stanza is coupled with another just like how the speaker feels he should be coupled with the target of his feelings.

exam is tomorrow, but in the first stanza when (he)says 'law divine', he is stating that not being together in said relationship would be going against God's will. Aside from this, the same line that this is written on features a trochee on 'all', emphasising nature as well as the couple having to abide by said law. This ties into the ironic point that Shelley was an atheist, possibly being satirical as mentioned in the video, but also maybe showing his desperation and willingness to see past his views to further his argument. Just some thoughts :) xx Good luck everyone !

Hi! I have a question about masculine and feminine rhyme in the poem, with "river" "ever" and "Ocean" "emotion"... teachers at my school say that "Ocean/emotion" is masculine rhyme and "river/ever" is feminine rhyme. Is this correct or is this video correct? Your reasoning seems clear to me but my teacher begs to differ! Thank you for the poetry analysis videos by the way, they really help me!
@mrbruff8 жыл бұрын
+Lauren :) this would disagree en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminine_rhyme as it says that what your teacher says is masculine is actually feminine
@lauren34098 жыл бұрын
Thank you!
@ejtaylor8518 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I was always taught that feminine rhymes were ones that end with an unstressed syllable, which is partly backed up by the Wiki definition: "in which the final syllable or syllables are unstressed". Don't the majority of the rhymes end with an unstressed syllable in this poem? 'RIV-er', 'EV-er', 'O-cean', 'eMO-tion'. Lines alternate between iambic (with an odd syllable count so the last one is unstressed), or trochaic (with even syllable counts so again the final syllable is unstressed). The only exceptions that I can see, which ARE masculine, are 'di-VINE' and 'THINE' in the first stanza, and a couple more in the second stanza: 'EARTH' 'WORTH', 'SEA', 'ME'. A website (study.com/academy/lesson/feminine-rhyme-definition-examples.html) says: "With feminine rhyme, the syllable that's doing the rhyming is the second-to-last syllable, and the ends of the rhyming words must have the same sound. Words like 'label' and 'table' have a feminine rhyme. The first syllables are louder, and they rhyme with each other, while the second syllables are softer and make the same sound." 'River' and 'ever' are a bit weird, because they don't have the first syllable as a perfect rhyme... RIV ... EV ... but I don't think they can be classed as masculine because they don't quite fit a feminine rhyme? Most definitions of masculine rhyme say that "the final, stressed syllable in the word is the one that rhymes." The poem's metre forces you to say 'RIV-uh, 'for-EV-uh', not 'ri-VER, 'FOR-uh-VER', which would be masculine... (and makes you sound like Len Goodman...) This person's blog (madameanglaise.wordpress.com/2016/03/14/an-analysis-of-loves-philosophy-by-percy-bysshe-shelley-for-aqa-english-literature-gcse/) agrees with me: "The rhyme scheme is neat, if not exactly perfect, with “river” and “ever” forming an imperfect echo. Some of the rhymes are feminine (where the word has two or syllables and the last is unstressed, like RIVer and EVer, Ocean and eMOtion, SINgle) In fact, in the first stanza, only diVINE and THINE are masculine rhymes, finishing with a stressed syllable. The rhyme scheme gets progressively more masculine with EARTH - SEA - WORTH - ME towards the end." However, there are other websites that support Lauren's teacher (www.bl.uk/learning/langlit/poetryperformance/shelley/poem2/shelley2.html): "linebreaks sometimes fall on light, feminine endings such as ‘river’ / ‘single’, and sometimes on stressed, masculine endings - ‘ocean’ / ‘earth’". What is one to think? :p

Could we say that the persona is so desperate he is beginning to fantasise about the potential experience he may have with this woman if she does give consent. Due to the use of the verbs 'mix' and 'mingle somewhat reflecting the declaration of foreplay, which will later lead to sexual intercourse through the use of the verbs 'clasps' and 'kiss'

That's not what 'dramatic' means in this case. 'Dramatic monologue' is one noun. Sort of like how 'dramatic irony' isn't when something is ironic, but really dramatically so.
