I came here after finding out about Slave Zero X. I'm really happy the new designs are in line with what the artist originally wanted for this series. That design by committee shit drove me insane, executives are the bane of creativity.

Hearing Guyver was one of the inspirations for Slave Zero warms my heart. I knew about the Macross and Eva inspiration, but Guyver? my first Anime, wicked boss!! (well the first anime that was not a localized, and heavily censored version, but purely as it was meant to be watched).
@NebLleb Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think that design-wise, Slave Zero was also inspired by Robotech, specifically The Masters arc (aka. Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross). The enemies Ch'an fights are very inspired by the Southern Cross Army's armour suits with a built in shield and a rifle.
@XenoJehuty84 Жыл бұрын

Cool video. I was actually the first person to start routing the game and finding all the mantling tricks (well in the modern day, that is; there was someone a decade back attempting some runs but they never went anywhere beyond that it seems), but it was pmctrilogy who took my findings and actually put it into a complete run (I am a bit embarrassed by my run for this game that I managed to do years back). Prior to Slave Zero, some of the developers who worked on it had done a hybrid third/first person shooter title called Eradicator (released in 1996), which was apparently supposed to be some kid-oriented game earlier in its development before becoming a very over the top and gritty scifi-esque shooter in keeping with mid-late 90s action cheese.

Quick Heads up. There's very little available information to go on when talking about this game's development. So it is difficult to say what is more or less correct. However, another video review does state that the SEGA Dreamcast deal is what forced the 9 Month Delay, and a code freeze for the Port's sake. The game was initially only intended for PC, and was forced to delay so they could release a the same time, and due to code freeze, couldn't fix all of its bugs. In that era of 3D Games, that's a potential death sentence. Especially when you run out of marketing budget before the actual launch. Slave Zero has some of the best level design of its era. Imagine how unfathomably hard it is to sell the effect that you're a giant robot inside an even more massive city that still needs to remain usable for things such as cars, and pedestrians that are rendered!!! All of this rendered on 2nd and 3rd generation 3D Graphics Accelerators. The effect falls apart in only a few key areas, but honestly, it's largely really well presented. The mad lad level designers and artists did a masterful job with this game. Honestly, had it gotten a chance at a sequel, I feel like it would have insane franchise potential.

If you like the original designs for Slave Zero maybe you should check out Rengoku and its sequel for psp. They're barely known games but I played 2 and it's amazing, never found anything else like it. The whole design of the game goes perfectly well with the dungeon crawler levels. It has the feel of some obscure ps2 japanese games but the gameplay is really fluid once you learn how it works

Slave Zero is a game far ahead of it's time If it was released today I'm sure it would be far better received since it's anime influence would be far more accepted but hopefully if X succeeds maybe A remake of the original will soon follow.

I distinctly remember renting a Dreamcast and Slave Zero from Blockbuster for a good report card gift, and it was a very frustrating experience, but damn if I didn’t love the atmosphere of it. I eventually played it on PC some time later, but got stumped at the final boss and gave up. Someday, I really should finish the PC version, and hopefully that rerelease is (mostly) bug free and my laptop can run it.🙃 And, while that sequel is taking a lot of liberties, hopefully it still turns out to be fun all the same. 🤞
