Your comments on this MRE are dead-on accurate. This is a surprisingly good meal. The recipe has since changed again--the rice is no longer part of meal; it's replaced by apple sauce. The mints were replaced with simple cookies. (The meal I tried was dated july 2018.) But the big surprise is how good the Asian beef & vegetables are and how good the pb&j is on that bread. And yes, chunky does help with this quite a bit.

I had this before since I was given MRE by my local government due to Hurricane Maria. It's ok, but I actually had to heat it up on a skillet to be able to eat that rice. Also, if I would get the chance to do it again, I'd make sure the ricr gets WELL HEATED rather than the meat.

I've never seen anyone drink cocoa cold. Don't like hot drinks? It mixes a lot better when hot. I like to add the coffee whitener and sometimes the coffee. Asian Style Beef Strips with Vegetables is just like the old Pork Chow Mein entree, except it's beef and no chow mein noodles, one of my all time favorites.
@gschultz95 жыл бұрын
The cocoa is indeed meant for use either hot or cold. But you're pretty perceptive--I actually don't really like any hot drinks. Have never gotten into coffee or tea. About the only hot drink I'll have is hot cocoa (ironically enough!). But for MRE cocoa, my preference is cold (it's like chocolate milk).

I forget. I love the spiced apples. As an experiment, I mixed about 3/4 of the pudding mix with the apples, mixed very well, let stand for a couple minutes, and then enjoyed an apple custard dessert. Maybe this as been done before but I thought you may want to try this sometime. This review was great...as usual. God bless.

By "expired", are you referring to three years after the date code? If so it should be fine if stored properly. If it's older than that it really could go either way. Stored well it should last many years, but you do have to be careful as it gets older.

@gschultz94 жыл бұрын
An MRE is designed to be shelf stable for 3-5 years. But that's the minimum standard. And that 3-5 years is really for peak taste and nutritional value. They can remain edible for longer, but the nutritional value (and taste quality) can deteriorate. They aren't MEANT to last for 10, 15, 20+ years, but they certainly can if stored well. It's not something you can depend or count on, but certainly possible.

@@voltag3man It's not for a day unless its a 24 hour MRE which are typically emergency MREs. These are meant to be consumed 2-3 times a day. A full day's worth of meals would consist of three MREs" Personally I don't think I could eat 3 MREs even if I was an active soldier but it would be close. I would be able to survive off of one or less a day obviously but I wouldn't have much energy compared to a man who has had 2-3 full MREs

I wonder what the mark up these resellers put on? I bet it is at least 100%, and for what you get, they are pretty poor value for money, I bet the US military pay under a couple of dollars per meal
@gschultz97 жыл бұрын
It's always a tough thing to get a specific price on genuine U.S. MREs--since it says right on the bag that they're not supposed to be re-sold commercially. That being said, this is really the only "legal" way to buy them--from a military commissary or PX. It isn't so much a "mark up" because there's no initial selling price (beyond what the government paid for them, which as you said would be a LOT cheaper than $8.00+). It's really what the market will bear. As long as there's demand for MREs, and as long as the supply will be limited by the fact that they're really not supposed to be sold commercially, people can charge pretty much whatever they want until nobody is willing to pay that price!

LaChoy canned Beef Chow Mein is sooo much better. I really enjoyed the bread, peanut butter and the jelly (mine was apple). The raspberry drink was great as was the cocoa.
