If there is a game that I loved which I see continuously criticized, it's none other than The Outer Worlds. That's fine as it isn't the perfect game, but I adore its writing, world, and RPG systems so much. Due to the progressing slander of the game, I felt it was only proper to roll back the clock to 2019 and remind people why folks such as myself really dig this game.

Something about the game turned people off, but I'm not sure exactly what it was. I think people were expecting a more "Fallout New Vegas, but it's 'Firefly'" vibe, but we instead got a more linear story in a specific setting with relatively limited maps to explore. I think the companion choices also turned some people off as they aren't all that exciting at first. It's unfair to the game, but that's the danger of hyped expectations vs reality.

My GOTY for 2019. My favorite aspect of this game had to be companion interactions, they would always butt into conversations and give their opinions or you can choose to involve them as dialogue options and it felt like a real conversation. Wish modern RPG's copied this and gave us variety in dialogue depending on who is accompanying you. Only other game that was comparable was Mass Effect 3.

Dragon age origins often did this, where companions would voice opinions about the subject at hands, snark remarks, or quip to the person you're talking to, and that person will respond in kind etc. you could also be an arse and do companion quests WITHOUT the companions which lead to realistic reactions and consequences you could talk your way out of or even completely end that companion's following with you.
@Sytakz

@@bobbyevans8136 Definitely. It's a massively underrrated game, because it's constantly compared to New Vegas or Fallout or whatnot, yet to think that we ended up getting what we did when Obsidian had such a small budget is crazy and very promising for TOW2/Avowed IMO

I never liked it despite wanting to like it. The whole 76 shit definitely made people want a new game to enjoy and I really I think the more recent discontent for this game is due to people becoming less effected by 76's failure. Gameplay is just bad, the writing is pretty meh and the whole game world I just don't care about because everybody in the game is just dumb as fuck. The whole joke about evil corporations gets old within the first opening hours and makes me care less about the people suffering under them because the corporations are dumb and incompetent as well, so why haven't they rebelled against them they only need room temperature IQ to win against the corporations in this game. So I disagree completely with Matty and think people's overall opinion degrading overtime is completely deserved and a good thing. After all if that sequel is going to be worth playing they need to learn from the failures of this game. I personally think this game doesn't deserve a sequel and a new project would be for the best, but whatever glad the people who enjoyed this bad game had fun.

Honestly the lack of interesting gear killed it for me. I was so ready to love it but then hours into the game I could see most of it was copy paste space armor and guns and blunt objects. Instead of just being a broad band of marauders, they could form different types of clans and fans of marauders that you could even interact with. Also, it’s be great if they make the corporates soldiers more unique. Another thing that should be reworked is the inventory system, and they should make better weapons.

Just finished The Outerworlds for the first time tonight about 15 minutes ago. I played it on PC. I couldn't get into the story. The characters were forgettable. The Unreliable computer was probably the most interesting and enjoyable character to me. The environments, buildings, containers, vending machines, weapons, armor, etc. were all so generic it was genuinely boring. Glad I'm done with the game. I won't be going back to it ever. And this is coming from someone who has gone back to the Fallout games multiple times. The Outerworlds just doesn't hold a candle to the Fallout universe. Edit: And it doesn't help that it runs like garbage on PC regardless of settings and PC hardware. My rig: CPU is a 5800X3D, 16GB DDR4 3200mhz 14cl timing RAM, NvME, GPU is the RX 6800 XT.

Oddly, I've just been playing this! I'm really enjoying it a lot more now than I did when it came out, and a big part of that is that I'm on an Xbox Series X now. The reduced load times make a much bigger difference than I ever thought they would, and with a silky smooth framerate at 4K, it's a lot easier to appreciate how colorful and beautiful the game is. There are plenty of things I'd love to see improved for the sequel, especially when it comes to inventory management and combat. That said, it's still one of the best games out there when it comes to player freedom and allowing the game and story to react to your choices, and I can't wait to see what they do with the sequel.

Starting from around 7:30, the frame rate is choppy, like mid 20s fps and there's a bit of a stutter. It kept on like this. This game runs buttery smooth at 60 fps on Series X. Just wondering why this was happening?

I dropped TOW after about a 20 hours when it first came out. Jumped back in recently as I was craving a First Person RPG and I got super immersed and LOVED IT. The DLCs added just enough and the game length was spot on to the point I was never bored but also didn't feel short handed. It's surprisingly good if you give it a chance.

I've been playing through the game again this past week, since I never got around to playing the two DLCs, having not played since it was an EGS exclusive. Obsidian is one of the best game developers ever for this style of game. I absolutely love everything about it. Want so much more of it. Such a fun game. If you like Fallout games, you should love this game.

I decided to play a character with low strength, low dexterity and low intelligence. Low strength and dexterity I chalk up to the physical atrophy of 70 years in cryo and the awakening through Phineas experimental solution. The detrimental effects can partially or nearly fully mitigated by perks, and as I play Spacer's Choice Edition, I have the possible levels to get some perks I would skip over on a standard Edition. The low intel is because I wanted the dumb options, even when I'm not using them. This also frees an additional 3 stat points, giving me 9 stat points to distribute and allowing me to get Perception, Charisma and Temperament to very high. Perception balances out the combat related negatives of intelligence and Charisma andnTemperament are vital for getting the full potential of my companions.

I think the problem with it was it’s comedic opening. To me it was the game saying, “don’t take me seriously” so I didn’t and never formed any connection to it

Actually this was one of the very few games I never finished after picking it up. There was an audio bug on the ps4 that caused really low quality sounds for things like footsteps, reloading, picking up items, etc. It was like something out of the Duke Nukem era. It really hampered my experience and by the time they patched it I just wasn’t bothered to go back.

A separate comment for something that I feel The Outer Worlds deserves more recognition for: when I played this game at launch on my Xbox One X, I never encountered a single bug. NONE. No weird visual bugs, no getting stuck in terrain, no crashes, no save file issues, no AI glitches... Just nothing. (I've read of one known bug relating to downed companions that was discovered and fixed within two months of release, but never experienced it myself.) With Obsidian's track record up until that point, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and replaying the game recently, I've again had no bugs or glitches occur at all. I know a lack of bugs doesn't make a game great, but it completely changed my expectations for the studio and for this genre of RPG in general. If Obsidian can keep up this kind of polish on their upcoming titles, then it's going to be a lot harder to accept the typical rampant fuckery happening in Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

I enjoyed the game quite a bit. Where it fell apart was in the level cap. So just after I started Peril on Gorgon (which I did second, after the Murder DLC), I was at max level cap. Suddenly, exploring and doing stuff had no XP reward, thus I found myself no longer wanting to explore and/or hunt down things to slaughter. My game play kinda switched to, "Lets get this over with since I can't level up any more." Also, I have never felt a desire to return to this game, even though I liked it. Granted, I have other stuff on my plate, but even after playing Skyrim three times, I sometimes want to go back and replay that. And with Borderlands 3, I'm playing two characters in parallel.

I enjoyed it. My only complaint was that the world felt more like small dioramas rather than living, breathing locations of any kind. More like isometric CRPG locations played in first person. I get why it was smaller scale, and in some ways it made things more intimate, more involved and less saddled with filler and dead air... but still, there has to be a balance between too big and too small. Still, no reason to hate on it.

When I played it I thought the there was a lack of weapon variety, the multiple hubs felt restrictive compared to open world games, the enemy’s weren’t interesting and seemed like there was no gore or it was turned down. Felt like if the game was given more time and bigger it would be good.

I really liked this Game I have played it 4 times now: first as a Hans Solo like character, then a second play through on super nova, the famous Obsidian low intelligence run and then my genocide run. I Loved the characters and writing for the most part except for Parvati's side quest (I'm just not in to the match making) and Vicar Max's story was kind of anti climatic but all of them were fun to be around and I love when they chimed into a conversation. And Gun play was very well done for an RPG and the guns were varied with the upgrade system push forward the progression and with the flaw system really added a layer of depth especially on the super nova difficulty. Though I did have fun with the game, there are some areas of improvement: The AI was very basic usually resulting to cover shooting or rush tactics, While they were entertaining their were far to many loading screens, A lot of the choices felt hollow like there weren't any real consequences to them, there was a lot of repeated dialog some it didn't matter which option i chose they would default to a preset response, I also think they were a little to liberal with the skill point system and i think they should have capped you at 30 before forcing to to pick a sub skill to level up and finally the perks were just unimaginative and kind of lame.

It's a decent game. It doesn't do too much wrong. Main issue is that people thought that Obsidian was going to go all out on this first installment. I mean Fallout 1 is good, but it's got nowhere near as much stuffing as the second game in the series, or New Vegas.

To me, The Outer Worlds had really really good story telling. There are many memorable pieces to the story that really flush out the world, & I was really pleased with the attention to detail the story writing has that reminded me so much of all the interconnectability in FNV. I really liked the deep rooted psychosis from the shipping company that was artfully woven.
