If you have enough flatware and dishes to avoid having to wash them immediately after every meal, then using a dishwasher can actually be a more efficient way to clean your dishes compared to the amount of water, electricity for the water heater, and time it takes to wash them by hand. Dishwashers use, on average, about four gallons of water and selectively run the heating element only during the beginning of the primary wash stage if the water isn't hot enough. It's actually a surprisingly efficient appliance if used properly. Electric clothes dryers, though, are definitely massive power sinks that we can only get away with because power in the US is ludicrously inexpensive.

Dishwashers do reuse water, at least within a cycle. (If you run it twice, of course that's two batches of water.) That's why they're actually more efficient than hand-washing dishes. I'm more concerned about the fact that she needed about $5 of aluminum foil to put that pan in the dishwasher to avoid spending less than 50¢ in gas to use the oven.
