Hicks was barely important anyway, and the only purpose Newt served was to make Ripley’s character motivation be based on motherhood, which was just something James Cameron came up with, because all his female characters have to be stand-ins for the women in his life. JUST because she survived the first film? it's a super depressing movie, yeah, and i think that works for it, especially with the ending in mind. it's tragically poetic and sadly cynical, but it works for me from this perspective.

Same. I love this movie, and I have never understood the hate it receives. It’s incredibly atmospheric. The creature FX were done by Chris Cunningham, who went on to direct some iconic music videos by Bjork and Aphex Twin. And the ending, as you said, is pure poetry. The whole Hicks and Newt thing… I also never understood the whole uproar over that either. Hicks was cool in Aliens, but he served no purpose to the greater story. Newt’s only purpose was to drive home the motherly aspect of Ripley, which was just shoehorned into her character by James Cameron (because he can only write women in a motherly or spousal way). Ripley was allowed to be a human woman in this, not just a “mother.”

@@Alfje17it’s Aliens: Defiance, where a colonial marine is sent in with a bunch of androids for a salvage mission. Once Weyland-Yutani confirm it’s xenomorphs there, they retask the androids and want them to bring a sample back to Earth. The marine, Zula Hendricks (who now has become a mainstay in the comic lore), and an android called Davis go AWOL to prevent the company from bringing back the live xenomorph samples. I don’t think they outright say that that’s why they send the androids, to avoid impregnation, but I think it’s implied. The comic is really good, great art - a good modern Alien comic that at the time linked to a lot of the lore so it’s a decent jumping on point, but I don’t know how much of it still counts now that Marvel have the comic rights. It also features Amanda Ripley in a few little cameo roles throughout the comic!

I got some additional trivia, I was recently working on set with stunt coordinator and performer Nick Gillard, who told of earning the record on this film for longest fire burn without air at around 2m30. It wasn’t a record he was going for either, he was supposed to do half and his coworker was to take over, he wasn’t on set and Fincher was pressuring them to get the shot so he said screw it and did the whole thing. He was bloody cooked mate! What a legend.

@@Paul_1971 I also really love the nihilism of it. I think it was a risky thing to do. But many critics don't seem to acknowledge that Weaver signed up for that script. In interviews, when she was talking about how raw, dark and terrifying the movie was, it was that script she was talking about. Like it or not, it was a bold. And it took all the crap that was being perpetrated by Fox and made something kinda profound with it. I hope Fincher has come around a bit more to the film over the years.

Even though James Cameron didn’t come back for this one, they still wanted to try and capture some of his aesthetic. Unfortunately, without the eyes of the man himself, they just couldn’t crack the aura that Aliens had. So they scrapped all the concept art and shots where they tried to recreate the trademark Cameron blue. This resulted in the working title of the film being Blue Harvest. Coincidentally, this was also the working title of Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.

I like alien 3, neither of these versions are my favourite tho, I might be wrong but I think there's a third version, if there isnt then I feel like there is a much better cut still to be made by just blending these two together and just using the best parts of both versions Regardless alien 3 is one of the most important movies in the franchise because it is the movie that establishes one of the most interesting and groundbreaking pieces of lore surrounding the alien, the fact that they take on physical traits of their host, people like to write off this movie as if it's all garbage and then glaze stories which feature T-Rex xenomorphs or predaliens or gorilla aliens as if they don't owe everything to a movie often cited as a low point for the franchise This movie also perfectly recaptures the dark, miserable lovecraftian (cruel and unforgiving universe) tone that the first movie had which was lost (even if it was deliberately) in James cameron's aliens by not only opening with the deaths of two fan favourite characters from the previous movie but then going so far as to show us in excruciating detail the autopsy of a child followed by the rest of the movie, the death of a dog, an attempted SA, Ripley turned host, etc. I think a lot of the hate this movie gets isnt actually about the quality of the movie, it's hate directed at the fact that the movie is unpleasant but that was never an accident, it was a choice
@thatgamingkiwi16305 ай бұрын
It'd be awesome if the community could mash together the best elements of both and make their own cut of the film. There'd probably be ferocious arguments over whether to use the dog or the ox though.
@sighberspook20215 ай бұрын
@@thatgamingkiwi1630 I'd use the dog if 8t were up to me, personally I've never understood why people say the ox is better, it doesn't make as much sense as the dog, the alien in alien 3 is smaller and faster, which are traits it could reasonably gain from a dog, if it came out of an ox then surely it would be larger than a regular alien and would have horns I assume people prefer the ox because no one wants to see a dog die but I think that's just part of the movies dark tone

Alien 3 was thee best monster movie of the 90s. Religious prisoners against the alien, and how those themes translated into redemption and a literal sacrifice in the face of the true unstoppable monster of nihilism, set against one of the series's best, all time classic soundtracks. Dance, Glover, Postlethwait and Dutton were all brilliant in their limited roles. The film's biggest sin is not continuing the story of Newt and Hicks and it's still largely overlooked and underrated as a result. Fincher caved to studio pressures in disowning this but the truth is that he made one phenomenal ride from an impossible production. And that iconic shot of the alien-Ripley face off is testament to its underlying but enduring brilliance. It's hard sci-fi at its finest. If we can't get a Blomkamp sequel to Aliens, then Alien 3 is a grand way to round off the trilogy.

19:04 There are 2 different scripts that William Gibson did: the less action-packed one, which the comic & audio drama are based on. And the more action packed one that was more like James Cameron's "Aliens". Where there was more gun and more marines. Hicks leads a squad of marines to take out a queen and one point in the script. It was the better script; it would have been better than the Alien 3 we got.
@RandomShinigami75 ай бұрын
So, I like Alien 3. Yes it has issues, yes it's nowhere near as good as Alien or Aliens. And of course I'm saddened that Fincher hated working on it so much. But the end result, the Assembly cut especially, I do genuinely like. I think it's the sense of dread throughout the whole movie. It's a good continuation of the horror of the first one and the high adrenaline terror of the second. And I'd argue it has the best soundtrack. Adagio is a particular favourite. I get why Fincher hates it, I understand that, but if even half the things we've heard about its production is true then the fact we got something watchable is actually a testament to his directing. The LV-426 Reddit page often has people posting about them liking the movie, and I hope he does some day see that there are people who like his work here.

I love both Aliens and Alien 3 However, Alien 3 gets too much unjustified and undeserved hate,people don't hate Alien 3 for what it is, they hate it for what it is not People wanted another Action + Sci-Fi film,they wanted another happy ending They wanted the adventures of Ripley,Newt,Hicks, and Bishop However,the movie went in a direction they didn't want it to go,which is to go back to its roots I'll admit that Aliens is a masterpiece of a movie,however people who hate Alien 3 because of how dark it is completely miss the point of the film,it's supposed to be dark,depressing,isolated,hopeless, despair,sad,scary,atmospheric People also miss the symbolism,poetic, redemption message, and the overall message of the movie People forget that this film was supposed to be the closing movie. (Before Fox decided they wanted more cash and decided to release the biggest mistake of a film Alien Resurrection) this movie was not only about the end of our beloved protagonist Ripley, but the end of the Alien franchise, before they started to milk the franchise for Cash
