One of the smaller details I like about this movie is how that Ripley isn’t the only one that cares about the kid. I feel like in a lot of movies when they add a kid there’s always just one character that has to care for them, usually the main, and none of the other characters care about the kid at all. In this everyone cares for Newt. Hudson saves her from the facehugger, Hicks refuses to let Bishop leave without her, they all have her safety in mind, except Burke of course.

When I was very young I woke up early and came down stairs to watch Saturday morning tv. I was awake so early that the children’s programmes hadn’t started yet so I put in a VHS to watch what I thought was recordings of the ITV Chart Show. As I settled down to eat my cereal and watch Bros and MC Hammer, I was surprised to see a man be ripped apart by a giant bug and milk spew out of his mouth and pour from his body. My mum had been watching Aliens with her boyfriend the night before and left the tape on top of the machine. I would have been about 7 years old. I was so traumatised that I sat frozen in my chair and watched the rest of the film against my own will. It took over a decade before I could eat Weetabix again.

And yes, in the 80s, us children did used to watch all our horror films on VHS because laser disc was for grown ups. Also people back then used to rip into women who continued to look after their children when the men just up and left. It was always the single mum’s fault in the 80s. It’s good to see that things have progressed and kids these days can just download horror whenever they want. It must be more convenient.

I like the extended cut for the mini guns and some other things but honestly she doesn’t need even more motivation. She already has ptsd and makes the connection with Newt. The fact she was willing to overcome her fears and ptsd honestly doesn’t have anything to do with her daughter. It’s more of an internal resolution imo.
@KrazzeeKane3 ай бұрын
@@Davidsworldtravelsit has everything to do with it. It offers a form of personal redemption for Ripley by going back for Newt when she was never able to make it back for her own daughter. It perfectly parallels the Alien Queen as well and her loss when the eggs are lit on fire. I find it to be extremely important as a scene
@Davidsworldtravels3 ай бұрын
@@KrazzeeKane yes I see what you’re saying but her daughter wasn’t killed by aliens. So that part of the redemption doesn’t really sync up. She has nightmares about aliens bursting out of her chest, not missing her daughter’s birthday or whatever. So her real arc is overcoming trauma. Her daughter is just not a character in this at all while Newt is. So at the end it’s mother vs mother not bc she’s an actual mother but bc she wants to protect someone else (Newt) from having the nightmares she does. She finds saving others (even the marines) as a way out of her own fear which is the real theme imo and much more powerful. I actually strongly dislike in films when they have to rely on family as shorthand for emotional connection without it being earned.

Something I'd add to the trivia segment: Counting the special edition, no fewer than four members of the cast of Aliens were voice actors on Starfleet, a British produced English language version of a Japanese sci-fi marionet series that ran on British TV in 1980-81. Mark Rolston who played Drake (The big, gruff blonde marine) played the tubby comic relief character and Newt's dad played the hero. In 1982, Brian May the lead guitarist from Queen, would produce a rock album based on the series alongside his good friend Eddie Van Halen, since May's son was a huge fan of Starfleet. You can find the complete series here on KZbin incidentally and the album had a remaster just last year and is on Spotify.

I watched this movie in French many years ago. I rewatched it last weekend. I was last weekend years old when I learnt the "game over man, GAME OVER!" came from this movie.

Amazing dialog such as "Hey Vasquez, has anyone ever confused..." Amazing imagery such as the alien rising out of the water Amazing witty symbolism joke "Queen takes Bishop"

Newt is such a sweetheart. I hope she gets more screen time in the next Alien movie. 😊

She has spinoff potential for sure.

@@whisperienced The actress would be in her late twenties by the time the third movie comes out. That is why she wasn't in the 3rd movie. Alien 3 is by far the most depressing Alien movie, because everyone Ripley befriended and bonded died.

You guys should do Treasure Planet and Atlantis and the other “forgotten” Disney animated movies from the early-mid 2000s I think that would be neat

@@Commodore22345 More likely that Alien made him more famous that anything else he did in his career, so he likely enjoyed the proxy success.

I was on a Europe trip last summer and in the middle of old Lyon in France, in a building that at some point was apartments and is surrounded by apartments and other regular old urban stuff, is a film and miniatures museum. They have one of/the original puppet for the Alien Queen in there on the third floor (and a whole bunch of other really cool film models and masks) The ship from Event Horizon is there too. It’s like 6ft long.

My favorite scene is Ripley going down the Elevator. The last moment where she stands there to feel the air and closes her eyes to mentally reaffirm herself.
