Having a mom be the issue in Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel is a nice change of pace 😅 Also, as someone with an immigrant, religious Asian mom and immigrant, religious African dad...the parent dynamics in Ms. Marvel and Turning Red for me have been spot on. 🤕😭😅🤣👌🏽

I don’t care about her powers. It’s the one thing from the comics, that has made me not care about the character. They’re really more on par with Plastic Man with what she can do. Same with her origin, which was a direct result of Marvel trying to minimize mutants. As for her family, the mom reminds me of my Pakistani coworker. And while I’m not Muslim, my grandma was just as overbearing. Now for me it’s because I grew up in the hood and she didn’t want me getting shot or caught up in something. And the 90s wasn’t friendly to nerds.

It’s funny about the Disney hating moms thing but I think I’m the full scope, it’s the dynamic of mother/daughter relationships. Something we’ve seen in Fresh Prince, the old and new versions, Turning Red, and even Soul. Mothers want to guide as much as fathers want to protect. Kamala’s mum doesn’t want her to fall to worldliness and keep with the culture and upbringing. I mean, take one look at any social media platform and look at the “role models” girls have. And I’m Soul the mum didn’t want her son to turn out like his absent pop who went to chase a dream and left his family behind. I think Disney captures those difficult generational stressors and concerns quite well. If anything. I’d like the fathers to be less of the push overs. But this show is infectious. I’m loving it so far.

The difference between this mother and say, the mother in Moon Knight, is that Kamala's mother clearly loves and wants to protect her daughter from the bigotry and hate that the world has for Muslims. Now, add the danger of superpowers to the mix? Her being overprotective is completely justified. Marc Spector's mother lost sight at the value of life when she lost her son and seeped into blame and hatred rather than healing. She proactively targeted Marc, leaving him permanently damaged. I get the criticism about Kamala's mom. However, I truly think her worry comes from love.

It feels much fresher than the other series so far. Hopefully the masses watch it so Disney/Marvel will continue pushing ahead more on originality and taking risks, especially with their more niche and less widely known characters. Especially compared to the way the first Avengers movie was shot. That film looks like a high budget TV show. I wouldn't say there is a mean girl in this. If Zoey is supposed to be it, she's the nicest mean girl I've ever seen in a teen comedy. Hell, if anything she's just more detached than actually mean, she didn't even do any of the tropes typical of mean girls, like preventing Kamala from attending her party, and her "insults" could easily come off as compliments. She's basically an insta who is always trying to get people to like and follow her, so can't afford to be mean.
@eckoalbino16237 ай бұрын
I'm late to this, at around 2 years, but I think Kamala having an overactive imagination is somewhat similar in the comics because she's an avid fan fiction author even when she's become a superhero. So, her depiction in the show as a less popular KZbinr is her way of coping with that. My take on the MCU version of her is that she has some ADHD traits which is her daydreaming to the point where she's unable to focus on her studies, driving lesson, and people who talk to her as well as her hyperactive personality

@MM-hf6om2 жыл бұрын
Both you and the guy are wrong. Marvel was since early 2000s a series being being bought by collectors between the 18 - 40 + demo. These were people that had prints saved at their local shop. When torrents hit mainstream was when we saw the first decline since the 90s . In an attempt to bring in the younger demos marvel decided to advertise to the 10- 18 crowd only they eyed the minority markets. Problem is they don't buy comics. The new generation does not buy books like that. So they alienated the older collectors for minority, lbgtq collectors that don't actually collect. Now superman which sold 100 k per month in early 00s struggles to sell 30 k. If you were selling 18 k a month your book was on the chopping block. Now it's a success. This is because marvel doesn't have a plan. The plan was only " make more minority heroes " but because they had no actual way to do this tastefully they shoe horned them in with atrocious writing and forced woke politics. But marvel never has a problem with female lead properties. Don't know where the hell that came from

@@MM-hf6om You ever think that minorities don't collect books because they didn't see themselves or their lives issues being talked about in comics. So Marvel tried to fix that. But as you said if it doesn't run on batteries the kids today don't like it. That being said as a white suburban child my favorite comic was Spawn. A black man with a black family and a tragic story.

@@antarchy1 I don't count spawn. Spawn was done properly . It was made with a vision. These new minority comics are not. They are made with a quota . A checklist. And I am a former collector who is a minority . I dont need to be patronized by bad writing with a forced agenda . Thats all these new age comics are . There are exceptions . Blue marvel works well. Miles morales too. But most are downright tone deaf and atrociously written . John Kent superman is an example of this as well as america chavez

@@MM-hf6om Yeah. I'm ignorant of most modern comics. especially Marvel books. I still buy some image books now and again. But my point was if more books like Spawn had been made then more minorities would have become collectors. i had a few black friends growing up that told me comics were white boy stuff. They weren't wrong. Nothing written really appealed to them. I did introduce one of them to Al Simmons. He became a life long comics fan.

Stupid generalization. I'm a minority and we all grew up on detective comics and X men comics in my neighborhood. And kids who didn't read comics back then did once TMNT came out.

At 13:20 what Korey said about no one dressed as Falcon at AvengersCon was so true. 🤣 Heck, Rocket Raccoon & that drumming Ant from Antman 2 got more cosplay love than Falcon.

It has a female homecoming/spider verse vibe and animation style to it
