I honestly want to buy an MSI board just for the fact that they fully disclosed what VRMs they used. Seeing the entire flow-diagram of the Carbon's power delivery on their website really put a smile on my face and I really wanna see other brands follow suit. Even with the lower-end boards, they still clearly state what VRMs they chose, if they're just Dr.MOS or SPS-es, actual current handling capabilities and whether they're doubled or not, so damn specific. MSI has been doing so many things right with AMD following from B450 and they're definitely gonna be my go-to when I plan to upgrade in the future

So, this video was part of what influenced me to go with the B550m Mortar for my build. (Silverstone RL08 mATX case, 3700x, Scuthe Fuma 2 cooler, 32gb of Trident Z B-die memory, currently on a ROG Strix 1080 ti and will decide on a 3080 card later in the year) Have to say, I am very satisfied. Sailing along with XMP enabled, 3600-16-16-36 and PBO enabled. Nice and fast, good thermals, plenty quiet enough and most importantly, rock solid. Thanks for doing these comparisons!

@felentus
@felentus 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the price. All of them seem to be decent. For me it's going to be the Gigabyte, just because it's the cheapest (by 30€) in Germany and it has proper bifurication support (if the manual is correct). I would avoid the Asus and Asrock Phantom board for now, since they use the Intel 2.5G Lan chip and that thing has an unfixable hardware bug that reduces bandwith to around 10Mb/s. While Intel says that the new revision is fixed. You don't know if you get the fixed version with the first few batches of the boards. The MSI one seems fine, but it has a fan, so it depends if you want that. I generally dislike boards with fans. The cheap Asrock board seems nice for "low" budget builds.

there is a engineer at MSI called TOPPC who speak Chinese, he have made a video explain that the memory speed listed on their site was less than what it is, as far as his own claim goes it was because those 5000+ xmp kit was not published by Micron so they can't publish it?? something like that.... he did basically say those 6 layer PCB board can do 5000+ but at the same time they don't bother update their website which worries me. I was considering either buying the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro which is 6 layer PCB and advertise 5000+, or the MSI tomahawk(or carbon or edge), with their website not really up to date it's just so hard for me to even consider.

I'm really thrown for a loop with your evaluations of the ITX boards. From what I can tell, the main pro that the x570 ones have is that both m.2 slots are pcie 4.0, where only one of the two is 4.0 on the b550 boards. Of course, ASRock's x570 itx board has an odd little niche of being the only board with a thunderbolt port, so that one can be justified. And ASUS actually nerfed the VRM - I do agree that that the Asus b550 makes very little sense to buy. But if you compare Gigabyte's x570 itx VS their b550 itx, isn't it just a straight upgrade outside of that one pcie 3.0 m.2 slot? Same VRM configuration with slightly better components (on paper), no chipset fan to worry about, better ethernet, same rear IO, and it's $40 cheaper! MSI doesn't have an x570 itx board to compare their b550 to, but this one is still very good. VRM looks like it is equal-of-better than all x570 itx boards. MSI has confirmed that the m.2 fan can be turned off completely in BIOS, so that's not a huge deal, even it is a bit nonsensical. The rear IO is just like the other itx options, though it does have a SPDIF port and a PS/2 port (lol? nice to have the option I guess). 2.5gb ethernet as well. And again, this is cheaper than any of the x570 itx options. Lots of reasons to go for b550 over x570 if you are after an itx board.

Bruh, i just gotta say, now that i know i can turn off the fan, you have sold this board to me, i was literally up for an entire 24 hours trying to find the perfect itx mother board, msi's itx b550 has that new connector and thats good, becuase now i can use the usb type c port on my case that i plan buying, and the vrms might be good enough for a 3700x, i,ll have to go to b550 itx part of this video rn to see if it can.

Good to see nice mATX boards with x16 slot in the correct location. 'Skipping' the first slot on mATX like Asus and Gigabyte is just stupid and limits access to pcie due to gpu location. On Atx it's fine cause you have extra slots, plus a bigger case to accommodate a nh-d15 or something similar that can be problematic next to a GPU in the top slot.

Since we complained about the MSI's X570 VRMs, they really took that to heart and delivered very good VRMs and VRM heatsinks on their more affordable boards. Also, I really like the mATX Mortars MSI makes. The B550M Mortar seems like the best mATX B550 out there. At least, in terms of power delivery and VRM cooling. In general, MSI seems like a very responsible company and they're taking criticism on board and are improving themselves, instead of trying to downplay it or ignore it.

Buildzoid, I would enjoy seeing a video of your Top 3 B550 mATX boards for a Ryzen 3900X. So far it looks like the Asrock B550M Pro4, the ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus, the MSI B550M Mortar or possibly the Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro (thought you said in first looks that the VRM on this one looks worse than the full ATX B550 Aorus Pro).

I have a msi b450 a pro max and upgraded from a 5600g to a 5800x3D. On a all core stress test the board still stays cool and can even handle the 5900x. If the pcie4 brought a noticable boost compared to pcie3 id go for the b550 tomahawk since it has veeery solid phases and cooling. It just strikes me as a very solid board overall.

@Buildzoid, audio on motherboards doesn't matter. Those of us who care enough to notice use USB interfaces. Clean USB power is way more important

I wonder if the overkill VRMs are cheaper than right-sizing them, having orders and inventory for those stages already, or saving on the R&D being greater than the added cost of the parts.

I have the b550 tomahawk and the lack of usb drives me up a wall. Not to mention every time I upgrade the bios it always stops at 50%. So I wait a couple minutes just in case it still updating then I restart and it completely works. After 6 months I now can not get a display. I have it all setup with msi for RMA and shipping it off today. MSI has the longest RMA . I love Samsungs RMA they pay for 2 day rush shipping both ways.

@Actually Hardcore Overclocking kzbin.info/www/bejne/gae8pHehjK-Uiac In this video he says that those memory OC numbers are for XMP.(12:50 you can hear XMP X is pronounced in Taiwanese) In the next slide he shows that you can manually tune the OC variables to get higher memory speeds.(13:00) btw. He is someone works in MSI, but I don't know what's his position.

Hey Buildzoid, would you recommend the Aorus X570 Elite over one of the $200 B550 boards like the MSI Tomahawk, Asrock Steel Legend or ASUS strix gaming-f? Apparently B550 tomahawk has better vrm temps than the x570 auorus elite.

25:13 MSI puts heatsinks on the "SOC" vrm for Intel Mortars, I know cuz I have that B250M Mortar and I'm pretty sure the B360 has one too. Pretty sure MSI just cheaped out with the B350 and B450 Mortars 38:20 Jokes on you Buildzoid, MSI has a Grenade lineup! XD
