2 - 1+1/2" diameter pieces of wooden doweling, and to grooves at each Pivot Point that make the bed slide forward when you close it up and you can slide it back when you set it down. I drew a quick sketch and posted it to my Instagram the only place I could think of to post it so you could get a kind of an idea of what I mean.

One advantage of this is there's no gap between the mattress and the wall, you can slide it right up to the wall.

Another way of doing it might be a long piano hinge between the back of the frame and the wall, but that might present issues with the bed up depending on how much room there is.

I was thinking that you can pull it lift it up a little bit pull it forward to the outer edge and then pivot it up and it would fit flat against the wall then when you tip it down and slide it back it slides all the way back against the wall so it would miss the counter.

Your making a mountain out of a molehill. ( KISS ) Make a box for the mattress, 2-Sides, and Bottom and (optional) Top. The front door will be the mattress bottom and make it so the door is flush with the sides when upright. Add a heavy duty piano hinge to the bottom part of the door. Gate Lock to the top to lock it upright. In the cabinets add 2 or 3 2x4 that pull out as legs when you use the bed and hide away when not in use. When upright its the bed + bottom 3/4(55" ? +3/4" ceiling down and 8"+3/4" From wall), when down its the bed with.. The door made to clear the cabinets. And if the door is smaller end the top part of the bed shows, install a 2" or 3" cloth or Curtain to hide it. Hope that help.
@SevenWanderstheWorld6 жыл бұрын
your "construction" outline is exactly what I have planned. that is the easy part. the hard part is that in the scenario you describe the mattress can't go all the way down because it binds on the sofa under it. I can only get it to fit on 2 of 3 edges (it hits the ceiling, hits the counter or hits the sofa below it) I can't get it to fit all 3 (I used scrap wood for mockups)

You will be able to use this. Picture how things might look if you cut away one corner of the hinge and the bed frame. I mean so that it will have one rounded corner. The location would be the one corner which is causing problems right now. You could cut the metal away with a grinder, or any sheet metal shop or machine shop or mechanic some where could do that for you. You could round off one corner of the bed frame to match. Next you will need to attach the wood to the hinge with nuts and bolts and a lock washer. The nut woukd fit between the hinge part.
@SevenWanderstheWorld6 жыл бұрын
rounding the corners would help a lot!

Hi Seven here are my two cents. I think if you use a double hinge on each side it will work. So you would have a pivot at the wall and one on the side of the mattress. It would be a piece of wood, maybe 1" by 2" by the length you need to give you room for you mattress to clear and clear the counter. Pivot points are at the ends of the 1 by 2. Kind of like a lever. Good luck!!!! Love you vids.

Tough day. But you'll figure it out. I would try a hinge on the wall. A hinge at the mattress thickness. And line up the bed platform with the counter top. The bed would share a bit of the countertop when lowered. Could act as a bedside table, maybe. Personally I would use a simple pullley and rope to raise the bed. Tie it off with a cleat. Thats what I would try. But youll get it to work. Thanks for the video.
@SevenWanderstheWorld6 жыл бұрын
appreciate the suggestion, but if the bed were at 36 inches inch height of the counter, then when rotating up to the wall it could only be 32 inches wide due to the wall height at the hinge point. not sure that would really work

Add a second rotation point mid way on the bed box so as the bed comes down you can lower the counter side first to bypass the counter top then once down drops the wall side. You would end up with all the weight on the 2 arms but you can prototype out of wood then when you run into a viewer with a welding setup switch over to metal for a more compact setup on them.

Mr. Seven "Shades Of" Grey how the heck are ya?! Well sir, you're into the heavy duty cipherin' that would even boggle the great mind of Jethro Bodine. It's frustrating when theory and practical use differ isn't it? I know that you've probably already gotten past this point so I hate to bring it up, but if it could help somebody it's worth mentioning. So I haven't done this, it's only a theory, but would a pipe and sleeve set up work in that situation? I was also thinkin' about guide lines on the two corners furthest from the wall. Nothing heavy duty, just some light aircraft cable and it would, of course be outta the way when the bed was up. Maybe they're dud ideas, maybe they're not needed, or wouldn't work, or there wouldn't be support for the cables...I don't know...I'm just spitballin' here. Heh, heh. Dammit buddy, I think you found where the mosquito hatchery is! That would drive me to distraction, I hate 'em! Ya do have some weather rollin' in there, I saw a cool zap over your shoulder heh, heh. Readin' weather. Would actual bed frame work to give your bed rigidity or help to keep things where ya want 'em? The best part is, again, you're already home and you've got food and a place to lay your head at night and the details will work out. That must be such a freeing and empowering and relaxing feeling. Honestly, if my two granddaughters did not need me here I'd be out there somewhere livin' the dream. Thanks for lettin' me have a peek at it man. Heh, heh. Murphy Bed Problem: Think how garage doors are stored. For example, for a non-flexible stiff garage door, it swings and is stored in the overhead, rotate that solution 90 degrees and use it in your van, this solution would use NO hinge. Put a couple pulleys attached to the ceiling (or close) above where you were going to put the hinges (now no hinges) and attach the two ropes at the location where the hinges were originally going to attach. Pull the ropes and the bed side near where the hinges used to attach swings up and fits against the wall. Weight is important here, use an air mattress. Misquitos Problem: Screens, Deet, desert, high mountains, not sure, I'm interested in your solution.

@SevenWanderstheWorld6 жыл бұрын
well, that is a truly original idea! (I'll keep this in mind but I'm currently pursuing a couple of other options which may work better for me)
@michaelcolley14986 жыл бұрын
I didn't think of this until now, but if you got truly inventive, you could modify this idea, where instead of making the entire bed be stiff and pull up vertically in one piece, you could split the bed down the middle, ...no... not exactly the middle, maybe a little off center of the middle. Attach the ropes to pull the half of the bed up vertically which could fit against the wall, and half of the bed would be hinged in the middle and pulled up vertically. Half of the bed would remain horizontal when the vertical part is pulled up and half of the bed would be vertical when the vertical part is pulled up, now you would have a place where three more people could sit when your bed was folded up. I like that idea, I might try it myself. The split doesn't have to be exactly at the 50% mark of the middle and the folded up part doesn't have to be exactly 90 degrees. That would make for a more comfortable place to sit. Also, that would lessen the weight of what is being pulled up. This is like the idea similar to a day bed where when the back is folded up, it is a place for people to sit and when the back is folded down, it is a bed. In this case, the horizontal part would stay horizontal and slide back and forth depending on whether the back is horizontal or vertical. That would add three more sitting places for your Tea Wagon. A similar idea would be like the picture in web page www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/10663/

Seven, you gave some dimensions in your video, but not enough for me to work the math on a folding solution to meet your needs. If you could provide a few measurements, I think I can help work out a solution for you. Here are the basic dimensions I think I'll need: width of van (use finished wall to finished wall), width of counter, height of counter, width of bench, height of bench, desired height of top of bed (I would assume this would be the height of the bench + thickness of the wood used for the bed box + mattress spring box (if used) + mattress thickness + bed sheets -- however if you wanted it higher, that would need to be mentioned), thickness of material you plan to use for the box for your bed frame, height of mattress, width of mattress, height of mattress box spring (if you are using one), thickness of sheets (and any winter blankets - want to make sure the bed closes even when made up for winter temps), and height of van from top of bench to finished ceiling height (please note any lights, fans or other obstructions that could be in the way when the bed is brought down).
@GTLees6 жыл бұрын
bsb0011, that's cool that you can maybe sketch something up for him. I noticed that you included the bedclothes in your dimensions and I completely understand why, but I just wanna mention something on that topic. When I was a trucker and used a bed that needed to be folded up when not in use the sheets etcetera would get very damp if left on in cooler weather. So, for me, a sleeping bag did the trick and I just rolled it up. I don't know about how this works in step vans or for other people in other trucks, I just wanted to mention my experience and maybe somebody can add to it. .........................PEACE!!

here are some numbers for you: ceiling height is 81 inches, the day bed is 18 inches (plus some covers). the full size mattress frame for the murphy is 55.75 inches and 8.75 inches thick. by my calculations that means if hinged at an edge it would take 55.75 + 8.75 = 64.5 inches of wall space. available wall space is 81 - 18 = 63 so I have about 2 inches that I'm not able to fit (plus covers). the space from the wall to kitchen counter is 57 inches. to fit a box of 55.75 (1.25 inches clearance). anyway it is a problem

I just remembered...pelicans in Wyoming? Really? Well today isn't a waste, I learned something heh, heh. A while ago I saw a video that absolutely shocked me and it was pelicans again. I could not believe my eyes when I saw what they would eat. Let's say that they're not on a fish only diet......uh-huh......feathers, fur...oh yeah. I won't go any further with it, but I was thoroughly surprised. .......................PEACE!!
