This is the first time I came across Angelina Jordan. I went to the Quincy Jones 85th birthday concert at the O2 in London, mainly to see Mick Hucknall from Simply Red. The show was opened by AJ, singing this song which is the version that Quincy Jones produced for Frank Sinatra. After the concert I looked on KZbin to see who this young girl was, and I've been hooked ever since.

Wow Steve - that is so fab. I often wonder how many fans of AJ's we see here in the comments or in the FB fan clubs happened to be at this concert at the o2. Lucky you. I unfortunately hadn't yet had the pleasure of hearing Angelina so didn't travel from Yorkshire to see it but I really wish I had. It is really pleasing to hear that you didn't know of AJ but after hearing her at 12 years old open that concert you went home and looked her up. Obviously initially impression was great. (and maybe you didn't know she was 12 when listening? - I have listened to much of the concert as I found it on an archive site so with all the interesting Quincy interview part and I know when introducing Angie they didn't mention anything about age. And of course she took part in the finale song, another Michael Jackson son, - "Man in the Mirror" - you don't have any phone recording do you? As unfortunately even the archived recordings cut off before that is sung - I think to go to the 10 o'clock news of all things. But I think Angie also had a mic issue for that song too unfortunately from the clip I have seen recorded by Grandma Mery I presume. What an intro though Steve to Angelina Jordan, unexpectedly hearing her live. 👍😄👍

These are top tier musicians with second to none production standards, it truly does not get better than what you just heard. Angelina is single handedly raising the bar for all vocalists from this point on, in my opinion, she is the new standard of excellence.

This is the Quincy Jones/Frank Sinatra arrangement. The orchestra is the Senbla Symphony Orchestra, and this is the rehearsal at the O2 Arena in London for Quincy's 85th birthday concert. Angelina was invited to perform for Quincy at the event. He compared her to a "young Michael Jackson." There are videos of her and Quincy backstage, with her singing acapella for him also.

The venue is actually LSO St Luke's, a refurbished historic church in London operated by the London Symphony Orchestra and used for rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions, among other things. (I used to think this might be part of the O2 Arena complex, but then I noticed the words on the unused music stand to Angelina's left. [grin] Images at the venue's website confirms that this is indeed the same place. It's about 3 or 4 miles away from the O2 Arena, as the crow flies.)

@Concerned Citizen Just to clarify: the _venue_ they are using is operated by LSO, but the _orchestra_ is indeed called the Senbla Symphony Orchestra (as verified by articles about the event published at the time). Whether it's an "ad hoc" collection of players hired anew for each event Senbla needs an orchestra for, or it has a greater degree of "permanence" to it (perhaps even using some LSO musicians), it's not the LSO.

Angelina´s renditions are like the original songs peppered with the perfect amount of magic mushrooms! As far as the band goes; Norway has many great musicians despite having a total population equal to a mid sized metropol. I believe has something to do with the fact that you can get free education at top notch music universities, and also - when you reach a certain level - there is all kinds of cultural support and events (some even get a monthly salary from the state for performing arts) that allow you to actually make a living playing your instrument.

This is Quincy Jones' arraignment he did for Frank Sinatra. The video here is from the rehearsal but the audio is from the actual performance she did for Quincy's 85th birthday. There is no video of the performance and the audio of the rehearsal was recorded by a cell phone in a poor location from the balcony. There is a video with the audio of the rehearsal but due to the location of the recording device, the sound of the band overpowers Angelina's voice.

The man playing with her in a interview said 1 to 3 times to make the covers posted many in one take. No edits. The fact she saw a young child with out shoes gave her the shoes she's had on and said I'm going to be a famous singer and won't whare shoes until all kiddos have shoes. This young woman is an incredible phenomenon. BTW, speaking of phenoms, I sent you a donation asking you to react to a classical singer. She is Amira Will-ig-hag-en(Willighagen). She is a Dutch soprano who won Holland's Got Talent in 2013 at the age of 9 y.o. singing opera. I apologize for no being able to send you the video because I am not very computer experienced. Another very impressive performance from Angelina. To put this in to context, this 12 year old lady had been giving the concerts in Norway with the military band, had sung the James Brown "It's a man's world", just a few days before coming to London for this event in June 2018. This rehearsal was at St Luke's church in central London, the home of the London Symphony Orchestra. The video shows the first, and most likely only, run through of this song. Angelina was not sure about what the tempo would be , so asked James, the conductor, to have one of the musicians to play a few bars, she listened intently, head to one side, then gave the nod, yes I'm OK with that. Perhaps the "swing" pace was a little faster than she would normally do, but she would go with that, after all, this was Q's arrangement, for his birthday! I get the feeling that James was unsure about how this would work out with such a young performer, but as you can see the orchestra was well impressed. What I find interesting is the Quincey made a personal to Angelina, I understand, having been introduced to her performances of this song, by the Jackson family, possibly due to Omer, the judge from Norway's Got Talent, who has close links with the family. The whole event was very last minute, Quincey happened to be in England, so invitations went to so many artists. I saw the flyer at the local station, Angelina's name was not on it, otherwise I would have been there! So, on the night , Angelina opened the show, she was so excited! Thankfully, although we don't have video, the BBC (radio) recorded it. At the end, taking the bows, Quincey had Angelina on his right and James the conductor on his left, the bows went on for a while, then Quincey noticed Angelina's bare feet, he was shocked to find out about that, he was then referring to her as his "young daughter", introducing her to everyone. At the Skavlan interview later that year, Angelina said that it had been her best experience in her life to date.

Another commentor has just said he went to see Mick Hucknall, not knowing anything about this 12 year old Angelina. Saw her open the show and went home (not there and then I am sure 🤣) but after the show and looked AJ up on KZbin and have been a fan every since. But Les - we will see her sometime in the future live. :-) There are some good little videos in Grandma Mery's YT channel of some of the bits you describe for anyone who wants to watch them. Including some still shots of Quincy bowing and seeing Angelina's bare feet. I thought it really special for AJ for as you say at the end Quincy takes his bows with Angelina in arm on one side and the conductor on the other. There is also a video from backstage of the actual build up to AJ going on to perform and singing but of course it is not good audio quality as it's from a phone (probably Mery or Mum) but it's still nice to see this moments. Not only did Quincy Jones arrange this for Frank Sinatra it was performed with Count Basie, it’s so well known you can google it and it’s the first thing that will pop up. Back then a lot of collaboration was done between Hollywood and black jazz musicians like Miles Davis, this was normal. Get over yourself, Frank Sinatra collaborated a lot with black artists, remember Sammy Davis Jr. was a member of the Rat Pack. You might have a problem with it, but they didn’t have a problem at all.

@@Kathy8852 - It was a rehearsal yes ( hence the shoes Vicki) but it was overlayed with the actual live concert sound recording because the audio on this mobile phone recording (by Mom Sara in this case [imho]) was poor) so hence the audio is fantastic . Albeit I am sure it actually was in AJ's rehearsal it just couldn't be recorded well from the balcony on a mobile phone. 👍😃

There are so many to recommend. May I suggest: I Who Have Nothing (Age 6/7) I'll be there (Age 8?) I'm Still Holding Out for You (Age 10) Born to Die (Age 12) Young and Beautiful (Age 12/13) A Million Years Ago (Age 12) Of course every song Angelina performs is magical, so there are no wrong choices. The list above are some of my favorites that you haven't done. I could probably add another 30 or so without thinking too hard about it, however.
