They typically don’t have a backing band live, they are incredibly tight for the amount of energy they throw at each song. There’s usually a backing track with all the programmed drums playing along with the live drums and then the various synth and piano lines coming in and out as they trigger them. As they’ve gotten bigger they’ve automated a bit more but they find ways to be playing music in each song live regardless of the backing tracks

Child of the 80s here too (just turned 50 last week ✌🏻). Josh Dun, the drummer, recorded and engineered the drums himself for this song from his home studio and Tyler did his part from his home studio. Live this band. I started drum lessons at 48 because of them! The BEST interactive live band I have ever seen. Watch some of their lives from Lollapalooza! So much energy! Great reaction!

I think if they ever added anyone it would be if the original bassist wanted to come back. But Tyler seems to enjoy playing bass. Twenty one pilots are amazing. Very deep and interesting lyrics, especially in their older songs. "My Blood from the Live Lounge" 11/10. He has a story teller performance that might be my favorite video on youtube. The name comes from a story about a guy who sold parts to make airplanes in WWI (?). He switched to a cheaper part to make more money, but 21 pilots died because the part was faulty.

If you want high interaction on your channel, keep covering TOP. The fan base is rabidly friendly and knowledgeable about everything having to do with the band. For instance, if you cover Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, or Levitate from the album Trench (that's the order, and if you do one, you should do all three), you will get people explaining the huge mythology built up around the metaphorical city of Dema. They play live as a duo, no backing band, but the drummer Josh runs a lot of the backing tracks from a laptop whilst also drumming. And contradictory to your comments, Josh is notably a very tight, hard hitting drummer, much in the style of Travis Barker. The name Twenty One Pilots, by the way, is a literary reference. I don't remember the whole story (I'm sure someone can fill in in the comments) but it has to do with doing the right thing even when it comes at a personal cost. And if you like the way they change style and tempo within a song, check out Ode to Sleep or Guns for Hands. If you want to watch Tyler work in the studio, check out the album version of The Hype followed by the Germany studio session for The Hype, where he completely redoes the song. Or, similar to the Mutemath Sessions, watch the one where he breaks down and solo performs/live loops five songs in Brooklyn.

It’s just the two of them. Tyler does all vocals and plays piano, bass, guitar, ukulele, and some rhythm, and lays down the backing tracks for the live performances. Josh is on drums, and trumpet (rare). They are both self-taught, and say they just play music they’d like to hear. They’ve worked with a few different producers through the years, but this next album, Scaled and Icy, was produced just by Tyler in his basement studio! Super creative!

There's a drum teacher who reacted to 2 of their live songs and said that while Josh was an amazing drummer who did complex beats that even took him a bit to learn, he obviously learned by watching Travis Barker of Blink 182 and their technique isn't great regarding drumstick holding. (Josh has confirmed he did in fact watch a lot of Travis while learning to play.)

The band name comes from the 1947 play All My Sons and Tyler draws a parallelism between the dilemma of the Protagonist and the "narrative" of the music/lyrics he creates, both Tyler and Josh think of their music as a way to encourage someone "think" They are best friends with similar "grow environment" (Conservative Christian households) Also since the first Album Tyler was telling a story trough out most of their songs most have to be with self-doubt, fears, anxiety, depression, faith

The name is inspired by Arthur Millers "All my sons" in which 21 pilots died due to a moral decision of someone building airplane parts?! Those moral decisions between faith and feelings are a big topic in especially their older music. I have them tattooed on me for a reason. Tyler is such a genius in terms of songwriting. Pure love for these guys.

During live performances, it is just the 2 of them. They sometimes bring guests on stage, but it is just the two of them, even when doing a world tour. Tyler, the lead singer, has said in interviews that he prefers being a two person band as it makes shows more intimate, but also means the space is Lisa cluttered than if they were say a 4 piece or 5 piece band. The name also comes from the play All My Sons by Arthur Miller, wherein a man commits suicide after causing the death of Twenty One Pilots during WW2 by sending faulty parts knowingly for the good of his business.

I found this tidbit interesting …. Rolling Stone reviewed data on 10 years of music hits and found that, over the last decade, only 4% of the year-end Top 50 songs have come from an individual. And the figure drops to 3.2% if you count by number of unique songwriters. (Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler Joseph wrote three of these single-writer songs, as did Calvin Harris.) In combining these lists, it appears that it takes, on average, five writers to write a hit song. Tyler is extremely talented to teach himself all these instruments in addition to writing insane lyrics and singing and rapping. I’m impressed. Best two concerts of my life (I’m 42 and my husband is 49). You would really like watching the deconstructed vids that they do.

"Twenty One Pilots " comes from an Arthur Miller play, "All My Sons". The dad in the play made a decision to allow faulty parts to be shipped from his factory and the result was that twenty one pilots died because of these faulty parts. Some either put something on the video or put them on IGTV. I like the fact that in the backing vocals you can hear Tyler's vocal fry and scream. (you can find just the vocals on KZbin) This song is for Tyler's brother Jay, who started his own music career. Tyler showed him the whole process of making a song, with this one. Also the lore is going to continue on this new TOP album. You probably don't know about the Blurryface character or the Dema and the bishops, Clancy, etc? TOP has always relied heavily on technology, so everything that can't be produced on the live show, is pre-recorded. At first Tyler had two band mates, they both quit. Then he got Josh to the drums. I think that Josh used to control the playback, until the live shows got so huge, that they got sound guys etc. to do the work.
@PEP.
@PEP. Жыл бұрын
he controls the playback from one single pedal now, confirmed by Father John - however the laptops running the ableton session are at FOH. The shows wouldnt be able to work with sound guys controlling them because its all so dependant on exact timings with metronomes and tyler and josh being ready with each other before starting a song.

to your question at around 7:33. i think that type of hi-hai playing is called the moela technique i think (don't know the spelling, so more experienced drummers can correct me if i'm wrong hehe).. and it's basically an easier way of producing ghostnotes on the hi-hat... it's more difficult to have a dynamically changing hi-hat in general and this song in particular if you use both hands.. all though i would probably do it as my technique sucks and i would cramp up immediately at this tempo haha xD you also keep all the 16th notes in the hi-hat which you wouldn't playing with two hands when you hit the snare drum :D... but yes it's a preference thing, and a skill thing... i'm getting tired just looking at Josh play this... it's crazy fast! and i think the drum recording is real! :D

If you want to avoid the block, just play a lyric version of the song. Also, I'm requesting reactions from you with more Twenty One Pilots this way you can really see the difference not just album to album but from song to song. Would you please react to "HeavyDirtySoul" and "Lane Boy" please? "HeavyDirtySoul" first... both are from the Blurryface album. Then if you would please do "Saturday" from Scaled and Icy, which stands for scaled back and isolated kind of like the 2020 pandemic. It's also an anagram for "Clancy is dead" but that has to do with the lore around the Trench CD, that's kind of falling into Scaled and Icy. One of the great things about Twenty One Pilots is the fact they put together these treasure hunts and maps with stories that the Clique (their fan base name) can figure out to find these little things that Tyler tosses out there and the Clique runs on all four cylinders figuring it out. It's actually kind of amazing, I've seen videos out there on KZbin talking about TOP and their lore. You asked at one point why Twenty One Pilots? It might have been in another video of yours I'm not sure, it's based off a play. Tyler came up with the band's name while studying "All My Sons" by Arthur Miller; a play about a man who commits suicide after causing the death of twenty one pilots during World War II because he knowingly sent them faulty parts for the good of his business.

Do you have perfect pitch? You must if you can play something so perfectly while listening to it for the first time.

The name twenty one pilots comes from a play the Tyler studied in school by arthur miller about a guy who causes the death of 21 pilots because he knowingly sends them faulty parts for his own financial gain and then commits suicide. That's why they are not called two pilots

Just gonna leave some love:) Enjoyed your reaction, first time watchin ya! Loved how you dove right into playing the song. Since you're a fan of switchin it up, I STRONGLY encourage you to dig into twenty one pilots - you will not be disappointed! They are phenomenal and are kings of the switch up, zigging and zagging everywhere. This new album is pop bop on purpose, but they do it all. They're eclectic and inspiring. Check out Trees Live at Fox Theater, Car Radio, Storyteller Performance (especially since you enjoyed the Mutemath versions). UG Sessions are good, too. Anything from their Trench album. I'll check back with ya... :) !!!
