What do you want to work on? Do you want to work on Software Development Jobs or Non Software Development Jobs? Depending on your Priority you should decide where you want to go and work. The thing is if you want to remain relevant in IT Industry then no matter which Industry you go to like Telecom, Banking etc, you pick IT jobs within that industry. You should be working on core IT functions. That will keep you relevant in IT industry even if you work for other industries.

If you do something totally different then you need to think whether you want to go into that field or not. Dont worry too much about what others are saying. It depends on what you want to do. If you are good in programming or anyother thing within IT and you are given something else. Then you should work towards getting into that role as soon as possible. It is ok to start somewhere. But you should always know where you want to go.
