What a treat! Thanks for sharing your visit----the handwork on both gowns & quilts is stunning. Kudos to your hubby for setting up the tour :) My grandmother was a quilter & the church she belonged to used to host "quilting bees". The ladies would stretch quilt tops on a big frame & stitch together a couple days a week. I think it was social as much as it was useful---quilters in the community didn't have space to set up a frame & the church did have space in the parish hall.

that's so cool! I was thinking it was also a kind of entertainment back then since. One could be a lot more productive before computers hit the scene 😂

Your painted fabric is way cool. Can't wait to see what you make width it. Really like the collar on the sweater. Thanks for sharing the museum tour with us!

Thanks for showing us those quilts. The remarkable part is that some of those quilts are in the same fabrics, which was expensive and not very available at the time, so women of privilege often were known for these historical quilts, then her home makes that all more remarkable. Thanks again.

Loved seeing the textiles. I grew up in Detroit and visited the Henry Ford Museum often. Thank you.

Thank you, Gini! Oh my, the textile arts! In. Awe. The fabric painted by your friend is amazing! I can imagine you embroidering on any portions of the garment or co-ordinates that are 'plain' fabric. Maybe some beads on the painted fabric? I love your collar and the way it frames your face.
@thebigsewalong11 ай бұрын
Thanks Robyn. Since she used some metallics in the painting I thought maybe I could mimic that with some metallic beads? we'll see 🤗

The museum looked amazing Gini! So awesome that you got to go and see those amazing creations in person. I know when I went to the Victoria Albert museum in London I spent literally hours looking at the clothing displays and I went to an exhibition of wedding attire from the last couple of centuries and I was just spellbound. We think we are pretty ok at sewing? Wow, the seamstresses of the past put us, well me anyway, to shame with their skill. Your friend's fabric painting is very cool. I look forward to seeing what you turn it in to🙋♀️

I love the V&A!! I've only been there once but it was for a Vivienne Westwood exhibit and I too was spellbound. Yeah these garments make mine look like "fast fashion" 🤣🤣🤣

Imagine if we still dressed so elaborately and elegantly today! Loved seeing those images from the museum. What a great gift!! Your jumper looks awesome, and the waistband changes you made are perfect. Love the outfit you created with it. Were they pants or a skirt? Thank you soooooo much for doing a tutorial on the Eve pants, Gini! I'm so excited! Have a great week xxx
@thebigsewalong11 ай бұрын
can you imagine doing all the things we do today in those dresses? 😮That was a skirt I had on with my mullet top. It was a ready to wear piece I bought years ago but I did recently see a Style Arc skirt pattern that was pretty similar. I 'll share that in this weeek''s video. 🤗🤗🤗

Loved the pics from the Ford Museum! Thanks so much for sharing. The silk fabric in the Dior dress is called ottoman, I believe. I had a piece of cotton ottoman years ago, might still be in my stash. Another great video!

Wow thanks for letting me know. I've heard of "ottoman" before bit had no idea that's what it was.

I love that you included that little bit from the museum. You have a great husband! I am inspired by those quilts. I just read a little bit more about Elizabeth McCord. I love that she was reusing fabric from clothing and other textiles in her quilts. I suppose many women did that at the time. I want to do more of that, too. I am planning to make some slippers for my family this Christmas using the pattern from @SewDIY (she's on KZbin also). I want to use some denim from jeans and maybe patchwork some of it . I'm thinking it would be cool to have different shades of blue. Happy sewing!
@thebigsewalong11 ай бұрын
Yeah I think back then a lot of people reused fabrics for things like that as new fabric was less available and also probably expensive. What's the saying? necessity is the mother of invention? Your slippers sound amazing! I especially like the idea of using different denim fabrics.
