it took me years. YEARS. to feel comfortable with the language, and i'm still not even fully fluent. not until i lived in germany for an extended period of time (like a year or so) did i start to feel comfortable calling myself a german speaker, and that was after studying it in middle school, high school, university, AND independently for ten (inconsistent) years... and spending two summers here. german is hard as hell and your german has improved so much; i'm really proud ^^ and keep it up!!
@peanutgallery123
@peanutgallery123 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChaoticTrack i can't remember much from my middle/high school lessons, but it made picking German up again much easier - remembering some vocab was easier, and sentence structure wasn't as big of a hurdle. it's going to take a little more effort to get a natural feel for the language when you're only starting now, but it's not impossible! you're only a few little steps back, and all that matters is the persistence to make up for them and carry on.
@peanutgallery123
@peanutgallery123 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChaoticTrack no problem, and good luck! it sounds like you're a great student. things that really helped me get a better feel for the grammar was writing, but also listening to a lot of German media. TV shows (in German, with German subtitles) are the best - you kind of learn like a baby would, from context and constant input. i'd suggest that instead of constant drills and exercises as you kind of get a feel for what structure and grammar sounds "iffy" when you're trying to formulate your own sentences. sorry, i'm a big language nerd 🙈🙈

Also a neat trick is watching something that you know by heart (for me it`S Harry Potter) with German dubbing. so you`ll know what they`re talking about but at the same time you`ll be like " so that`s how they would say that in German!". fio zack I am a native English speaker learning German, Portuguese, Spanish, and French. I would say the easiest is Spanish & French, then Portuguese (esp european, brasiliero português is much easier for me), then English, then German. Portuguese & German are the most fun to speak though so I like practicing them. French is soooo boring to me now but learning it helps me learn other languages, and I default to a french accent in all the new languages i learn. 8:06 The gender of the noun never changes. "Die Frau" (the woman): here the "die" is a definitive article because "woman" is female. When you have the sentence "Ich gebe der Frau Blumen" (I give flowers to the woman) the "der" is not a definitive article. We have the wonderful yet horrible thing to foreigners called the four cases in German. In this sentence, you have to ask yourself WHO are you giving flowers to and that is the third case "Dativ"; so the "der" is part of the Dativobjekt (object of the sentence). If you ask, however, WHAT is being done in this sentence/given to the women, then the answer is the flowers. This is the fourth case called Akkusativ so there is a second object in this sentence, the Akkusativobjekt (akkusativ object). Not sure this makes sense but hope it does lol.

Hey Damon, ich verfolge deine Videos schon seit längerem und bin beeindruckt! Du sprichst nicht nur perfektes Französisch fast ohne Akzent sondern auch schon richtig gutes Deutsch (avec un accent français mdrrrrr) :)) thanks for uploading la crème de la crème de KZbin en anglais, français et même en allemand, you are the best!

Damon admire your determination,you tackled the language in a short period of time.When you pronounce the word ich you say iš but you need to pronounce it ih.You have an accent of course, I had it when i first started learning Deutsch.The ich is the most noticeable so just work on that,it will get better overtime.

American in Germany here! :) I've been mostly successful with learning the articles but there are always a few that I forget. One tip: Especially helpful when you're starting out, you can sometimes AVOID the article completely using words like "etwas", "ein bisschen", "einmal" and "(so) eine Art". The first three are great for ordering in restaurants. ex) "Ich hätte gerne etwas Milch dazu." "Kann ich ein bisschen Zucker haben?" "Einmal Pizza Margherita, bitte" ex) "Wir brauchen (so) eine Art Vertrag" (We need some sort of contract). Don't worry though. Germans are very understanding if you get the article wrong. Eventually, if you stick with it, the table of articles will become implanted in your head and will totally make sense! The great thing about German is that once you get the logic down, it feels, logically, very logical 😄.

I found your channel through Ashley's recent Paris video and I've been so enchanted by your content ever since. You've helped me learn more about what I want in my life, like living in many places, and have inspired me to pick up Spanish again. But for real this time! I'm trying out Italian too. It's nice to just know random words in many languages. I haven't been feeling like I'm mentally growing since graduating highschool in May, and I'm glad I found you now instead of much later because I feel like I'll be using my time wiser.

So many KZbinrs that I watch have been sponsored by Rosetta Stone lately and I gave in and got it for myself as well. Been using it for over a month for Korean and Italian and damn, it's actually great. I don't expect to be "speaking" once I'm done, because I don't think you can truly learn how to speak without talking to natives, but I'll definitely be able to watch movies and "consume" all sorts of online content once I'm done, for sure. It also made me a lot more comfortable pronouncing the stuff, teaching my mouth how to make those different sounds, because duh, adult brain keeps telling you "nah bitch, this is wrong, this is not what you've been saying your entire life so far", except that's just how learning works and I'm so happy it forces me to say *all* the things. If there's one thing I don't like it's that the website-version "deactivates" when it's not your active tab, so I can't really do things on the side (which is good for learning new things, but I like doing things on the side during repetition because I should eventually be able to understand the things without actively focusing on them, right?). The app versions work great for that though. I will add though, I'd say unlike Duolingo or other free options out there, it doesn't feel so much like a game but actual learning. It won't always be fun, it will be frustrating at times, there are no constant pop-ups telling you you're doing great and activating your happy hormone processes like many gamified language options do. But damn, it is effective.

This was so interesting to watch!! My dad moved to berlin in the late 80s from england and never actually took a language course (he wishes he did now) so he basically just learned the language by ear, in contrast to your german learning expirience. He is literally fluent now and understands most everything, I often speak with him in german, but the daaaamn articles and prepositions.... he still gets those mixed up all the time. So I think even when you have a pretty good grasp on the language, the missing grammar base lines can sometimes make it seem like you don't to outsiders (which is kind of stupid but that's what i've noticed)

I love your videos whether it's a little documentary, or just you hanging out with friends, or you recording your language journey ... you always manage to put a smile on my face. A real smile. Thanks for that. it really means a lot. And for the language learning, I tried to focus on only one language for a week, only watching videos and TV shows in that language (without subtitles even though I don't understand at first), actively using my HelloTalk account, keeping journals in my target language .... and the result was incredible. At the end of the week, I was able to write and read and understanding videos and vlogs etc in that language. And the only thing I knew was saying hello and how are you a week ago. Maybe you should make a video, a challenge video where you try to focus on German for a whole week. That's just me trying to help if you need any. Thanks again, Damon!

You're doing amaaaaaing, Damon!! The best advice I would give you as a German native speaker is to work on your 'ch's, for example you pronounce 'Ich' 'Ish' but it should be a 'CCHHH' sound if you know what I mean hahah it's hard to describe.

Rosetta stone was the first tool I ever used when I started learning German about 10 years ago. Damon you are making great progress with your German, and you are drawing on your general language learning experience! You're calling me out with your question at the end - " For English speakers who have learned German, when you speak German, are you just throwing out one and guessing and checking" - UMMM yes, that is 100% me!! You eventually figure out which ones fit in which places of the sentence, come after certain prepositions, etc, but I am often guessing. I feel certain that I make tons of mistakes, and when I do look up the genders of nouns, my first instinct ends up being wrong a lot of the time. I say this to native speakers when I'm chatting with them, and they say "Nonono, your German sounds great! You don't make very many mistakes at all!" So that still puzzles me to this day.

I’m in a exchange program in the german part of Switzerland right now. 2 months ago they said I have to learn a bit before I come here and they send me a mail with an app that I can learn but before checking the mail I saw your video and watch it. I thought Rosetta Stone was cool and I might buy it after doing their app because it seem really helpful. I watched your video then open the mail and saw that they send the login information for rosetta stone, I was shocked. So we started to learn german at the same time with the same app. I assure you that you learned really fast and good for the time you’ve been practicing. I’m still struggling with german:/ But you give me hope and will to study with these videos so thank you very much:)
