My Dear Damo, what a shock for you! As someone who has had 2 strokes, I want to reassure you that you did exactly the right thing and made all the right decisions. Fortunately for me my wife was with me on both occasions and saw the signs, but had to make difficult decisions which were time critical. The second time they gave me a clot busting drug which could either work or cause a massive bleed on the brain and my wife had to decide. I had difficulty with movement on my right hand side and my speech was affected, but if my dear wife had not agreed to the treatment I would have been far worse off. After 12 months I am now fully recovered. I am pleased that your father is now making some slight progress, but a severe stroke like his will take a long time for him to recover. I will pray for him and his recovery and also you and all the family who have come together to care for him. Thanks for sharing. God bless you all 😀❤🙏

Yes Damo, it’s a real miracle! I wish a full recovery to your dad. I am sure that the presence of the whole family around him will be a real benefit to his recovery and his stimulation to regain his autonomy after this stroke. I admire the serenity and this warm bond in Thai families who surround their elders until the end. We have a lot to learn from you here in Europe……🙏🏻

Having been in exactly the same situation 30 years ago, Damo has made the right decision. The first 3 days after a stroke are critical , especially if there is internal bleeding causing pressure build up. Damo's dad is now in a hospital that was pretty quick in diagnosing the problem and have the facilities to deal with it. My thoughts and best wishes are with you all.

So sorry guys. Good to hear D's Father has been improving. Hopefully, father and the prognosis continues to improve in the coming days. Finally, wishing Damo finds some grace and closure with her decisions which were obviously made with the best interests of both Uncle and Father in mind. So very easy to criticize those with the burden when burden free. Always a bit different when the responsibility is resting heavy on your shoulders.

I’m so sorry to hear this Damo. I’m sending my prayers for your dad’s fast recovery. As an ICU nurse here in the states- I wondered when he was going cold turkey , he somehow fell and hit is head. Therefore causing to have a subdural bleed. Self withdrawing from alcohol doesn’t cause strokes. It’s the withdrawal symptoms of confusion, shaking/tremors that can cause imbalance therefore patients end of falling. Families need to CHOOSE A PERSON in the family to be medical power of attorney. Families can decide what’s best but having that designated MPOA is helpful like you have been. His family members should not be blaming you for your choices. None of this is your fault. You were there from the beginning and now helping through his recovery phase. I personally don’t know his medical history but given his age, drinking and maybe if he smokes- makes one a high risk for having strokes. Patients who have strokes it is a slow recovery- please all be patience.. 1. Make sure he is able to maintain his airway and secretions 2. Helping do “passive range of motion “ to his arms and legs can help gain his strength and prevent tightness of the muscles 3. Make sure he can swalllow safely with his meals and liquids- if he’s coughing and choking it’s a sign his food going into his airway- he will need to go back to hospital The above I’ve mentioned is to help you Damo. For I feel like you are family. ❤❤❤

A stroke finished my dad off, well 2 actually...the first was his warning and his chance to stop drinking and smoking... He didn't, the second stroke months later did it for him. Best wishes to everyone there.. hopefully he gets chance to change his lifestyle.

I’ve had to make hard decisions for my elderly father before he died and understand how difficult this is for you. Damo, you should not beat yourself up with guilt. My father in law had the same issues with Lao Khao. He went to be a monk to dry out as many in the village do. He was looking well then went downhill. I remember at home having to carry him out as he wanted to lie on the sala. He was so lite it was like picking up a bag of bones. Very good man, just liked a drink. We used to smuggle food into the Wat after curfew so he could eat at night. I think other people used to smuggle in the Lao Khao.
