My stepmother’s old birds

My first dog passed away last May, he was the thing that kept me moving in the darkest time of my life. I’m forever grateful we had him for as long as we did. We got a new puppy after our oldest cat passed away last July (which made us all go through a loop since he was around since me and my younger brother were born) and now we have a corgi. He’s rambunctious and never not moving but we still notice things that our old dog did too, or habits that both of them had. He’s not a replacement but he makes us smile and tries his best to live his puppy life to the fullest. Edit: 4 months later and we have another one. We adopted an 8 month old beagle mix so our corgi wouldn’t be so lonely. Our neighbors (on both sides of the fence) have 3 big dogs total and 2 small dogs. We decided to get him a friend since he spent a lot of his outside time running along the fences with them. The beagle mix is so incredibly sweet, he loves cuddling and doesn’t know the meaning “personal space.” He’s springy and the only dog we’ve seen that can out run our corgi.

When I was a kid, my Mom and I took in a stray cat after feeding her outside for a few months. Years later and early in the morning, Mom's trying to get the trash from the week out the door and this cat (fluffy Angora, inside-only, queen of the house) leaps past her and goes running into the relatively coyote-filled woods around our house. Mom wakes me and we spend the rest of the day walking around and calling for her. That night, we're finally deciding to go to bed (after no sign of her and staying up late to look outside for her frequently), when I hear her cry. Mom opens the door and she comes prancing back in like nothing ever happened (y'know, now that she was apparently good and ready to come back home after a day of adventuring and TOTALLY not hearing us ever lol)

My dog Mable (she’s a German Shepard sheltie we think) is really skittish and one time while we were driving with her in my grandma’s car, SHE JUMPED OUT THE WINDOW. She went UNDER THE GOSH DANG CAR, and WOULDNT COME OUT. After like 10 minutes of bribing her with treats and food, we finally got her. Goodness. It was a memory I will never forget. She was 13 and We were only a few days apart and she died about 3 days after my birthday so it hit really hard.but after some time I got over it and now I'm better. i love how you mentioned that there are good breeders out there, my next dog is gonna be a german shepherd. i’ve done loads of research on ethical breeding and whatnot, the breeder i like health tests their dogs and all that jazz. i have 2 rescue dogs, i love them very much but rescue is not for everyone!! both of them have behavioral issues and not everyone is equipped to deal with that. of course not all rescue dogs have behavioral issues but it can be a bit of a gamble sometimes. some people don’t care, some people prefer to know what they’re getting beforehand. adopt or shop responsibly!!

When I was kid, I lived on the countryside and we had this golden retriever. She was almost always just free on the yard as she never ran away (well, almost never as this story shows), and the closest neighbors were like 300 metres away so she wouldn't really bother anyone either. However, when she was getting old we got another dog, a beagle. And as a hound dog, this one would obviously just run off after any rabbit she would see or smell, so we kept her caged when outside. But she managed to escape the cage a couple of times (it was built for the golden retriever when she was young, so there was a small gap between the cage and its concrete floor that didn't matter back then but apparently a beagle managed to squeeze through, she stopped escaping when we covered that gap), and just went on to explore the countryside for a bit. I think she was once spotted like over 10 kilometres away from our home but she came back within the same day every time. However, one of these times the old goldie decided to tag along, and she did not come back when the beagle did. We were so worried, and by the nightfall we feared that she had fallen to some ditch and couldn't get up with her old legs. Next day me and my sister had to go to school and we just felt miserable the whole day. We came home in the afternoon and as nobody else was home yet, we hollered for a bit for the dog, but she still was not there so we went inside. However, a bit after, we saw her through a window, just trotting outside as if looking for us as we had called for her. That rush of relief was indeed indecribable. She was tired but otherwise all okay, and after some food, water and rest she was as good as ever.
