When I was a child, I believed that "The Neverending Story" was actually never-ending, and if I started it I would be trapped, unable to do anything else until I reached an ending that would never come. It was actually pretty scary to me.

Jaiden......you've unrepressed a memory for me!! I also confused AIDS for a different condition when I was younger. I don't actually remember doing this, but my childhood friends told me about it. When I was a kid I tried to explain to my classmates that I had ADHD and if I forgot to take my medication, I would act noticeably different at school, but ALLEGEDLY instead of telling everyone I had ADHD, I told them I had AIDS bc both acronym's started with an A and I guess I got confused. Apparently one of the staff at school even called my parents to ask if I actually had AIDS, which was, I presume a very confusing phone call. So yeah don't feel too embarrassed about confusing Tetanus with AIDS bc at least you didn't go around telling everyone you had AIDS as a child LOL

You all are over their confusing names while I used to that there was cancer and anything else was just being sick... Well my family did once make me think that you could get pneumonia in your bum hole!! I got pneumonia once and asked my doctor "So where is the fluid exactly??" as a less obvious way of asking if the fluid was in my bum hole!

i had a similar mix up as a child. i had really bad allergies growing up (they're way more manageable now) and at the time i was taking claritin for them. around the same time my dad was taking chantix to try to quit smoking, andddd you can see where this is going. for a while whenever someone asked me "are you on any medications" i would happily say "yes, chantix!"

When I was young, I was convinced that there was only one beach. I mean, when you think about it it makes sense, I live in the Midwest and had never gone to anything you could even consider a beach, and when people talked about it it was only “the beach,” never “a beach” implying one massive beach. This also led me to think that the world was one big continent with a beach along one side. I don’t know about the other sides, I never talked about this so I never thought too hard about it.

One of the worst things I believed (and found out in a very embarrassing way) was that I thought 'wet dreams' were just another way of saying 'wetting the bed'. I used to wet the bed quite a lot, sadly. And I found out that 'wet dreams' weren't wetting the bed when I heard my Mom and sister mention the term while we were in the car getting food from a drive-thru, and I said "I remember when I used to have wet dreams.", and the 2 of them erupted in laughter. I instantly knew then that the term meant something different than what I thought. They explained it to me while still laughing, and I wished I could die then and there. To make matters worse, I was maybe around 15 or 16 years old.

Okay, so stick with me here. When I was younger, I confused Presbyterians and pedestrians (my brother did too and parotted it to me) and then I confused those with an occupation. When my mom asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I said with total confidence “I want to be a presbyterian” and when she asked why I replied “because they’re nice people with no jobs”. That detail was because I thought that pedestrians solely existed to cross the street and wave at people and their dogs.

Fun fact: there is an actual syndrome called Tetris, its when your passion for something is so big, that it affects the way your brain thinks, its called Tetris because the first "apparition" was on a child, that, liked Tetris so much, that ended up always thinking about how things IRL would fit together like puzzle pieces, the parents quickly noticed and BAM! New syndrome.

That's really cool! I find it fascinating how blind people would use the internet because if you were born blind how would you know the letters on a keyboard if you've never seen them and how would you be able to know where to click on the screen! It's really fascinating to me, and I was wondering how you do day to day life things! I think that blind people are so cool and awesome, and I hope that you have a great day!

3:34 I want to point out, it is sorta true, but not exactly that. I talked to a family member who is a very reputable doctor, and according to them, eyes naturally are meant to focus on stuff farther away so while it won't make you blind, if you spend a really large amount of time (like, A LOT) looking at stuff within 6 feet it will tire your eyes which results in needed glasses sooner. This is why eye doctors (sorry forgot the word) made the 20-20-20 rule, which states that every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Sadly it's a bit too true because I spent most of my time during quarantine (like 10 hours a day at least, almost every day) at my desk staring at a screen. And now there's a good chance I have to get glasses soon. EDIT: Read the last sentence before reading edit, because it came true and I have glasses now (but only for seeing farther away stuff)

Staring at a close screen causes eyestrain, which can cause headaches and is unpleasant and painful, but it won't cause permanent damage.

I believe the rule really came from the fact old TV were semi radioactive? But modern day TV's and screens are a lot safer and its fine if you sit close, but know it strains your eyes. If you grew up with 20/20 (most people actually have 18-19/20 vision, but it's close enough so 20/20 :p) and now are getting glasses, most likely genetics and or a disease (i forgot what it's called, but I do have it, and it essentially eats away your eyesight) Someone fact check me, but I think this is the reason, not 100% sure.
Harkz0r
Harkz0r Жыл бұрын
Honestly I think there is some truth in this. Based on my memories I had myopia even as a child (though I didn't get glasses until I was in my teens and tried on my father's pair, leading me to want to get my eyes properly tested - I didn't want to give kids at school yet another reason to pick on me), but since wearing glasses habitually and spending increasingly less time outside the older I've become, my distance vision has deteriorated more quickly than I would have expected to have naturally occurred over time. If I minimised my near-work, wore glasses less often and exposed myself to large distances constantly, it's maybe possible I could reverse some of this, but that isn't really an option for me right now.

I remember I was gullible and imaginative, but not stupid exactly. For some reason, in junior school, my classmates had come to believe that 'paint cleaned soap'. So when we went to the toilets to rinse out our brushes and palettes, there was an uncomfortably large number of children that would paint the soap in different colours as they were rinsing it. I remember feeling like the only sane person in the room, like... it didn't make sense, and they couldn't explain it to me, so I just didn't do it. Another thing I vaguely remember a teacher tried to tell us was that we shouldn't touch our heads because there's a hole at the top of your head, and it could damage you or kill you or something. After some research it's maybe the case that infants have a soft skull or the bones aren't fully fused yet, but to this day I have no clue why they would tell us such a thing. I recall being confused when my grandparents told me "rice sticks to your ribs", I must have been about 4 or 5 or so. I've always interpreted things very literally, but at that point I already had a basic concept of anatomy, so I tried thinking about how or why rice stuck to your bones and was very confused. Then when I learned about the bloodstream I was even more lost. Maybe it's just a figure of speech or something. What was another one... oh yeah, apparently cat feces can make you blind if you touch it. Actually I don't know if there's any kind of kernel of truth in there, it's such an absurd thing to do in the first place unless you're cleaning up after a pet. Kinda wild to me that so many people actively wanted glasses though. I was shortsighted even as a child, but was terrified of having to have glasses as it would be just one more thing making me fit the stereotypical image of a nerdy kid, and I was already bullied enough. Though that changed when I was 16 and I tried on my father's pair for a laugh. I felt like the world had suddenly changed from 480p into 4k. In that instant I knew I wanted a pair of my own and damn the consequences.

I think the myth about sitting too close to TV's being bad for the eyes came from A: CRTs do actually give off X-Rays slightly above background levels (But well within safe limits) and B: CRTs are big, EXTREMELY front-heavy glass tubes and could easily injure children in front of them if they fell over. There were even news stories and stuff I remember from the early 2000's warning people not to put them on top of dressers (Or anything too much taller than it was deep) because of how greatly they reduced the degrees of tilt needed to tip the whole setup over and potentially hurt someone

Glasses are kinda a hassle sometimes, but when you first experience going from blurry eye sight to the magic of those lenses, it has an indescribable feeling. I like not being blind 😂. So yeah, sometimes my hair gets caught in them and they get stuck behind my ears but I still describe them as magic!

If you sit in front of the TV, everyday for like 10+ hours without looking at something distant for at least a few seconds once an hour, it can damage your eyes. Not as in make you blind or anything but you do start to have shorter vision. It does require a LOT of hours though so don't worry. Plus you can just fix your eyes if you exercise them by trying to focus on distant objects.

I grew up with that TV myth. I just got bad eye sight from both parents lol I also grew up with the 'if you get a head concession and you sleep before it's healed, you'll go into a coma and/or die". As a adult a month ago I was busy doing stuff in the couch (can't say what) and was banging my head over and over again against this wooden part of the couch. It didn't hurt at first but the next day it was very sore and me and my husband conclude I had a head concession because of how the injury was. It scared us cause I slept before realizing it but then I did research cause I wanted to know how long it was till a head concession healed and found out scientists claim there was no proof that head concessions will make you go into a coma or die. They actually recommend you get some rest. That was the best relief I've ever had. Also screw rolling eyes into the back of your head. Never tried, and I refuse to even do it lol

I want to thank my friend Sigrid in 2nd grade, she helped me grow out of my naive mentality by telling me she had invisible wings. And she told me a lot of other lies too, like she was a princess. She moved across the country to DC a long time ago tho, but tbh I wasn’t sad since she ditched me for four square-

I relate so much on the glasses thing but... I kinda crossed the line in my scheme to get them. Ok so! Both my older sisters have glasses and so I wanted glasses too. So when I was like 8 or 9 I purposefully pretended that I had vision problems and after a week or two my mom and I went to go get an eye exam for me. But the day before the eye exam my dad told me "make sure to be completely honest with what you see when doing the eye exam or you might get the wrong prescription glasses and make your vision worse and your eyes will hurt" and I was just like... "wait WHAT?" So yeah I backed out when we went to the exam and dropped the whole my vision is bad thing and just was honest with the doctor and of course I didn't need glasses... I feel horrible about this now cuz my mom had to waste money for an eye exam for nothing and she still has no idea but one day i'll tell her.... maybe.

I remember this one time when I was younger I rolled my eyes at my mom and she said to me: "If you keep rolling your eyes like that they'll roll right out of your head." She then proceeded to tell me a completely made up story about the one time that she was at her friends house and her friends sister rolled her eyes and they rolled out of her head and onto the floor. For YEARS of my life I was convinced that if I rolled my eyes to much they would fall out. Thanks mom.

I have a childhood story about the cross eyes thing of how they could get stuck, I don’t really remember what happened because it happened when I was like 4- but from what my grandparents told me,my eyes were stuck crossed and I had to get surgery to get them fixed- I don’t know what I did but all I know is that I can look two different ways on command(and sometimes on accident) and it’s a cool way to freak everyone out when they meet me,one eye will be looking at them and my other eye is just doing it own thing.Anyway, sooo ya it was traumatic, I don’t recommend it.(unless u need it don’t listen to me)

I remember being told a somewhat similar lie to the aluminum foil is poison one, at least insofar as it involves poison and being told it so the listener won't do something. In this case, it was a doctor telling me the stitches in my head were poison, but only if I reached up to touch them. Or at least, I think that was what was said, but it does make sense in a "prevent the child from hurting themselves" kind of way.

At my summer camp, the camp director was bald, and he told all the counselors that he was the logo of Ike's sandwiches and I believed that lie for 6 years. My mom was one of the counselors, so she never verified that it was a joke so when I told her about it years later, she started to laugh at me :')

Someone with contacts and glasses here. Yes you have it amazing. I’m pretty jealous. That being said you didn’t say “I can’t imagine” or “are you a cripple” and instead gave a shout out. Sadly the most positive thing anyone has ever said about my vision. Also the “we had no idea what was coming part” was absolutely right.

You probably confused the two because AIDS was beginning to be known for being on abandoned needles druggies used and left lying around beaches and parks. So a barefoot child would sometimes run around and get a cut on some unknown item and parents had to take them to the emergency room to be tested for AIDS while hoping they'd only get a tetanus shot. I kinda remember that scare when I was a kid and a few Foxtrot comics that kinda covered it. So there! you have an answer!

When I was in about 2nd grade I forgot the words for first aid kit and called it a first anniversary kit, which continued for about a year because no one wanted to correct me. I also never understood any metaphors and would combine and confuse them for one another which turned out to be part of the autism. I thought all teachers had to be women for a long time because in my little southern town I had never met a male teacher until grade 5. I didn't think romantic love was a thing and it was all just a play up of affection for tv and that couples were only together to help do chores and sometimes raise kids. That turned out to be aromantism. I thought everyone always had a constant stream of sound in their head, and that if it was silent outside of their head they would hear ringing. I thought everyone could hear lights and sockets buzzing gently or hated the feeling of the seam in clothes.

When I was a kid I saw a TV show that explained the story of that bulgarian spy who was killed with a poison masked as an umbrella. I remembered it and when I went to school the next day I told some girls from my class that if they ever touch the top of ANY umbrella they'll die after 2 days or something. The worst part is that they somehow believed me🤣

I used to think if you touched anything made by humans left on the ground (disposable cups, used cigarettes, pieces of plastic or Styrofoam from packaged, etc) you would automatically get aids unless you washed your hands immediately after. I think one of my friends told me their big brother told them. I remember freaking out almost crying while scrubbing my hands clean, when I picked up a broken water bottle and remembering this "fact"

I know this was posted a long time ago, but fun fact. The whole television eye thing is actually a problem from single point fixation. Your eyes could get damaged from focusing on a single point for too long which is why you see people that read a lot of books with glasses all the time.

This reminds me when I was a kid, I always hold my pee and wet my pants/mattress and one day when my mom and I watched an alien movie where a lady got an octopus like creature in her stomach then my mom said "This is what happens if you hold your pee" and I was traumatized. But now, when I remembered back to this childhood memory, it's kinda silly.
