Ppl love saying shit like that... some white cop mistook me for a missing woman on THE HIGHWAY OF TEARS. I was just walking my dog. @Nothereforit174
@Nothereforit174 Ай бұрын
@@LesyaaaaaaaI think it’s because so many people now are white Natives who won’t just say that comfortably instead of pretending they’re the same as other Natives(who enjoy less safety when they leave the res or their homes,are more vulnerable to racism, and tbh may see some ugly history in the faces of white Natives that’s worse if they’re not forthcoming). So then it’s like okay friend, but you’re the random white person too when I see you too😅😂, like no one should say they don’t look Native, but they could also get real about their heritage instead of hiding behind the cloak that whiteness affords where everyone is willing to let them take on any ethnicity they claim like a blank canvas. Black Natives can’t do that and are shunned with a harder time registering because until recently no one even kept good records for Black people, so it’s like a lot of people grow up with the language and culture of their tribe just to be told they don’t count because of blood quantum or insufficient ancestry references. SMH. then there’s just people who don’t realize Natives aren’t all the same skin color, hair style, dress or whatever they’re expecting I get told I don’t look Black which I realized is people’s way of saying I don’t fit there stereotypes(eye color is unique in general and I have long hair) about Black identity because Black is a race and doesn’t tell them my background which is fairly mixed and I have no qualms about just as I’m proud to be Black(and I identify as first because that’s my culture and the way I’m generally seen but I don’t forget my Native and European roots for example). I just remind them Black comes in variations just like our ancestors did from the beginning when they were bought here. If you’re mixed-I only mentioned the possibility since you said no one ever takes you for Native so it made me consider you might be a white Native, and if it’s no hate if so -you could just own it and let people know colonization means some Natives have complex backgrounds so there’s no certain look for everyone. Or give them the old variations speech, just for different reasons than me😂

Lol, in middle school I went to my school counselor because I was depressed. I'm legally blind and my eyes are a bit wonky, so when I mentioned I was sad, she asked "Is it because of your eyes?". I was stunned, to say the least and went "No... What's wrong with my eyes?" think I became more insecure after that. Sorry if this seems unrelated, the therapy book you were talking about and how the therapist implied that it was because of the patient's looks reminded me of it.

Ableism and fear that she projected without considering that your lives can be different and fulfilling because you simply learned to live in ways that suit your own needs. I hope your journey with your new therapist is much more affirming, safe, and makes you feel like you don’t need to cry for help ❤ I’m gonna say something and as someone with ADHD, this is how I relate to people so if it’s off, please consider me learning too, my brain doesn’t do empathy the same and I connect with people by trying to draw connections. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t so I like to be honest and vulnerable about that before I share something with someone else disabled. But your eyes, you called them wonky and then I felt bad for you. It’s hard to get tone online and I already take things literal though so maybe you didn’t mean it serious😅but just in case I wanted to say having unsteady eyes or misaligned eyes is more common than you may be aware of! People like me with astigmatism have it. I don’t focus well on objects and my eyes move rapidly: up and down, in circles and so on. People used to think I was nervous in middle school before I got my glasses because I would open my eyes really wide to see and they seemed “jumpy”. Tbh I did have anxiety but that didn’t help me hide it lol. Then I got injured a couple years back(still dealing with it in PT) and learned that can affect eye movement too because my classes no longer made eyes steady. But injured people like me who have lost their internal balance are everywhere, people with general walking disabilities, etc I guess it just helped me to know ability is on a spectrum and everyone is disabled at some point due to age but often before due to injury(and the healing process), neurodivergence(including depression and anxiety which are common and not always chronic/can be situational), and even after pregnancy(most moms don’t get pt to recover their pelvic floor on top of weekends bones and teeth from babies taking half their calcium which makes them vulnerable to bone related conditions later and losing teeth early). Looking at being disabled like that made me realize I don’t need to feel very insecure because my needs and accommodations are just my own and someone else’s are theirs and as more people realize this, people will get less judgemental and healthier(one of many adults who thought they were just flawed but have a difference in brain development due to ADHD and had been beating myself up for not being able to do things the same as when I was younger-didn’t realize it’s because I had more oversight then). I guess I’m just saying you’re not the problem, the world is anytime someone judges you or you encounter places that don’t account for a range of human existence by being accessible 😊

Finding the right therapist is REALLY freaking hard, but that part where she said the thing about his looks hits hard. I was talking about my own complicated childhood trauma, because it wasn't violent which actually created intimacy issues for me. My therapist at the time SERIOUSLY said to me, "Well, maybe you actually liked it and just felt bad later." These people need training on this topic. I would have assumed it would just be an important part of their training to get licensed, but apparently not. I wish I'd walked out too. I think I was way too patient with her for saying something so disgusting and out of bounds.

I don't even think ANYONE should go to a therapist that says that someone SA'ed you because of your looks. What kind of therapist SAYS that? It's times like these where I realise why some people are so distrusting of therapists, because so many therapists aren't properly educated on things like race and LGBTQ+ issues. My one therapist straight up purposefully misgendered and deadnamed my brother for a whole session, and we know it was purposeful because she told him that she was trying a "necessary procedure"

it's interesting considering how much of omegaverse in fanfiction is like, not about a straight couple, but all these mainstream published omegaverse works seem to be het. got some feelings about that ngl. the dynamics in omegaverse i think do wonderfully in examining non-"normative" relationship types, i dont know if i would be interested in reading something that was just alpha-man, omega-woman (though to be fair i dont know if thats exactly how these published omegaverse works are portraying it)

A lot of omegaverse (at least the ones in my fandoms, so there may be differences) play up gender and social roles and project them onto male characters, almost in a strange reflection of real world femininity/masculinity. I don't think it's strange for that to then be simplified to f/m romance, esp when they're trying to market to a traditional romance audience who wouldn't think to pick up a more queer book. I'm really hoping this does lead the way into more queer stories and honestly, wouldn't be surprised if Omegaverse led the publishing revolution to more mainstream queer couples.

So happy to hear that you liked Emily Wilde's second book! I picked both books last month since you recommended the first one and it was such a nice surprise how much I liked the narrative voice and the romance between the leads. I also loved how the second book used lots of "breadcrumbs" left in the footnotes of the first one.

Interesting selection of books. The example from the therapist mentioning his looks after what he told her was super weird. If I read books about mental health I usually check reviews first to see if some things stand out, because of the times I read some motivational/ health books which suddenly went to Christian conspiracy theories or suddenly felt like being accusatory towards neurodivergence.

I listened to Not That Bad as an audio book on my drives from North Carolina to see my partner who lives in DC, and I had to pull over once because I got so emotional. One of the best books I've ever read it is so cathartic to read as a survivor. I think everyone should read it regardless of their gender or relation to rape culture.

If you're looking to learn more about polyamory, I'd recommend Ethical Slut by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy! Honestly it's such a good book for any kinds of relationships, regardless if they're monogamous or poly, romantic, sexual, or platonic. They put out a new edition in 2017 with updated language about gender and aspec identities, and as someone who's aroace it felt oddly welcoming and heartwarming.

Want to say something after reading some of the comments: Omegaverse is just hitting traditional publishing, but it's been something of a thing in indie publishing and self-publishing for a while now. Addison Cain, she of the plagiarism scandal, published Born to be Bound in 2016, and the Fake Mate came out in 2023, so this has been a long time coming. As someone who's been into omegaverse for years, I'm pretty fine with this. One of my favorite novels is an M/F omegaverse romance (written by a queer woman, actually). I like that the genre is getting wider because as much as I love fanfiction, I also don't want to read it literally all the time, so having original omegaverse to read is a good time, and there's plenty of M/M to go along with the M/F, and then lots of different kinds of polyamory if you're up for that, too.

I'm really hoping to see more of the omegaverse tropes adapted bc while I'm not a heavy reader of the genre there are some great non-smut dynamics that I would love to see in more novels, like "pack families"

21:09 this reminded me of this movie about a guy grieving his husband, and by the end of the film he confesses to his two best friends (who were also friends with the husband) that he only accepted opening their marriage for casual hook ups (but never serious relationships, only hook ups (that he never even did, only his husband hooked up sometimes)), because he was secretly super insecure and afraid of coming off as more trouble than the relationship was worth, so he said yes to the open relationship to make his husband happy. but now that his beloved husband is dead, he finds out dude had a sort of boyfriend (friend with benefits? idek) he was in love with, and he can't even be fully pissed about it and yell at him for sort of cheating on him, because there's no one to yell anymore when he's already dead and buried for over a year.
