My First Gibson: Mike Ness of Social Distortion

At the early age of 4 years old, Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness began listening to AM Radio where he discovered The Beatles, CCR, The Supremes and The Rolling Stones.
Growing up in Fullerton, California, he was also raised on blues and country and would eventually stumble upon his first Gibson guitar at the local pawn shop.

This was too short! Mike Ness is a legend and if you don’t know who he is then now is the time. Awesome to see puck rock artists being featured, Les Paul’s were the signature guitar of 1990’s punk rock.

They were! My next 6 string is either gonna be a black LP Custom, a vintage white LP Custom like Steve Jones, or a LP Standard Goldtop. My next bass will either be a Rickenbacker 4003, a Dakota Red Fender Vintera, or a Japanese original '50's Precision Bass

Worst I ever got hurt was a social d show Was otherwise a stellar performance. I remember mike ness telling someone he was gonna hit them so hard he was gonna kill the guy next to him. Got hit good in the kidney. Seems to hurt there. Pissed blood for a while. Was worth it.

Ness’ secret is that he hunts down LP Deluxe gibbys with minibuckers. He chucks the minibucker for P90s. He says he learned that trick from Neil Young’s guitar tech.

I have Les Pauls galore in my collection and recently purchased the Standard 60's in bourbon burst but for some reason, my 'go to' guitar to this day is still my 2006 Explorer in natural. It came with gold hardware and gold screw 496r/500t pickups which at this point, I put those 2 pickups in ALL my Gibson guitars. And in some of my BC Rich guitars also. I think I just prefer the ceramics. Anyone know why this model has the gold hardware vs the typical chrome???

He is the lead singer and guitarist for Social Distortion. Awesome band that came out of the punk scene and beyond. Been playing since the '70's, with various members. Really good stuff even up to the stuff that they play now which is more rockabilly.
