Holy crap can’t believe someone is reacting to this album. Godflesh is one of the most important bands in my life. During my teen years no other band came close to blow my mind like they did. Although saying that the first time I listened to them I didn’t get it cause I was heavily into death metal at the time and didn’t understand. But came back again and again and eventually everything clicked.

If you dig this one you should absolutely check out Swans’ two first albums, ‘Filth’ and ‘Cop’. Not as groovy, but every inch as heavy if not more. Justin has stated early Swans as a big influence several times and the similarities are obvious, especially on Streetcleaner. Streetcleaner is a stone classic on it’s own merits, though. No one knew what to make of it at all when it dropped onto the unsuspecting Metal scene in 1989, but it definitely left it’s mark. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Faith No More and countless other rock bands got much heavier and brutal after this one. Godflesh changed the sound of Heavy music for the future without most people knowing and it’s amazing to see how that continues to this day.

Godflesh never saw themvselves as a Metal band as well, but they became known as one as their label, Earache Records, and their network was primarily known for cultivating and pushing the most extreme Metal there was at the time. I guess that’s how one pushes the establishment from the inside :)

@@mollyesanborn Swans have changed their style so many times over the years, so you'll get a different experience with each album of theirs you listen to. As the original poster mentioned though, Filth and Cop are the two albums that sound like they had the biggest influence on Godflesh.

I've always felt this was one of the most important metal albums of all-time and pushed the boundaries of what the genre was capable of. The guitars in metal pre-Streetcleaner were very riff and solo-oriented, but on Streetcleaner, the guitars are used more to create these sort of textured, atmospheric, sonic soundscapes. It inspired bands like Neurosis, Isis, and a lot of groups in the post-metal movement that was really big in the 2000's.

I saw them on this tour. They were playing with Napalm Death and Nocturnus. I had never seen photos of any of these band but the usual look at the time was long hair and band t-shirts. I was hanging out in the crowd waiting for the show to start. This strange, almost hyperactive, little bald guy in regular clothes came up to me and asked me for some weed, which I didn't have. I saw him ask several others too. Imagine my surprise when he walks out onstage about 20 minutes later, pushes the button on a drum machine and launches into this. So yeah, Justin Broadrick hit me up for weed and I didn't know who he was. This record is bone crushingly heavy in a way that was just brand new when it came out. Not like the Death Metal or Doom stuff everyone else was doing. It took the Industrial sounds of Ministry and NIN into new territory. The productions values add to the effect, as you kept commenting on. I always picked up on all the religious themes too. Even the name Godflesh has religious overtones. In Christianity, Jesus is sometimes referred to as God made flesh. This record gets better with more listens and I'm really glad you are enjoying it so much the first time around. Streetcleaner is my favorite track.

That's a great story, thanks for sharing! I'd love to see Godflesh live at some point, that's gotta be pretty amazing to hear this music in person. They really have such a unique style of industrial metal, so heavy and although there is something weirdly upbeat at times about this album, it's a different vein of industrial from what I'm used to with the likes of Ministry and NIN, etc. I love it though, just so suffocating with its tone. I'll certainly be checking more of their music out now.

@@mollyesanborn Yeah, it was a really exciting time. A lot of new ground was being broken. Industrial, Death Metal, Grindcore and Doom were all new genres just beginning to emerge and define themselves. Thrash itself was pretty new and it was spawning off and influencing this new stuff. And the shows were insane. A hundred or so people in some dive club where the moshing and stage diving was unchecked. The bands freely mingled with the fans so you got to meet people. All for like $10 at the door for three or four bands on the bill. I wish I had a time machine. LOL. You'd have fit in the scene pretty well and been a welcome addition.

Broadrick is a total genius, he is being so underrated despite all the great things he brought to the table in terms of music, heaviness and creativity - and the bass of Ben Green is incredibly heavy and apparently simple, but it requires a zen calm to use those superheavy notes!!! :D Great video!!! An album I would recommend to you in terms of crazy strong music - but it's a heavy one, Today Is The Day "And Sadness Will Prevail" got some of these noisy guitars as well!, and "A Sun That Never Sets" by Neurosis - that is such an emotional, slow, hard album it could really surprise you!!! Wanted to mention Godflesh were inspired by the early works of swans. Godflesh is an incredible group with their own distinctive brand of dark, sludgy industrial and I’m super excited for your reactions to their remarkably consistent discography- but I’d highly also recommend checking out swans at some point too. Their early stuff is a grating fusion of sludge/industrial metal and a dark, experimental punk style known as “No Wave.” Filth and cop are both near-masterpieces so I’d recommend just starting from their beginning if you would consider reacting :) Hope you enjoy if so, no worried if not. god i love this review! over the last few months since the end of last yr ive been in an endlessly autistic obsession around Justin Broadrick and all his musical works. as he revealed not too long ago before the release of "Purge", he's been coming to terms w/ his own autistic + PTSD diagnoses, and it's so clear to hear elements of such in a lot of the Godflesh discography over time. i would LOVE for u to try out their 1992 released "Pure" which "Purge" is directly inspired by, over three decades on. on "Pure", u'll get to witness the most divine hip-hop / industrial/noise metal cross-over on that album. i mean, the title track wonderfully interpolates the rhythm sample of Eric B & Rakim's "Let The Rhythm Hit Em", while Green strums away on bass, Broadrick thrashes lead guitar and his guttural screams carry the beat! it's another remarkable cornerstone in the journey of Godflesh and i honestly think u would really enjoy it ❤

Scorn was the other two thirds of Napalm Death's original line-up. Their album "Evanescence" is the last one featuring Nick Bullen, the bassist vocalist. They have evolved from a sound reminiscent of Godflesh (Boadrick played on early tracks) but this album has more of a narcotic quality to it. For a nice change, but still in the same universe.

Where to go next ? just complete the discography one by one (don't skip Cold World single and Merciless EP), check how JKB and this project was developing, each album a bit different from the last. Once that is done.. Fall of Because (proto Godflesh, very reminicsent, '86), Sweet Tooth (another side project, "super group", bit more different than Godflesh but I've never heard JKB plays guitar like that, showing how versatile he is, released just one sueprb album, very unique)

Very insightful observations of this album. Justin's back catalog is all encompassing filled with vastly different soundscapes but still ends up sounding like him if that makes any sense. This album was my gateway to other projects of his. Streetcleaner is one my favorite Godflesh albums along with Selfless. No one Godflesh album or ep sounds like the next thing even if theres a continuity running through it. Jesu is probably the most vulnerable and morose sounding music of Justin's career. The heartache ep and the self titled are my personal favorites. The whole thing you were saying about Godflesh sounding ethereal and almost choir like gets amped up to 11 with jesu. I got into these guys a little over a year ago after reading a Chat Pile interview where they cited them as a real big influence alongside of Korn. I don't know if this counts as a genre but listening to early Godflesh for me is like getting a glimpse into the early development of what would become late 90s - early 00s hot topic culture: jenko jeans, chain wallets, frosted tips and a lot of goth, industrial, and alt-metal/nü-metal music. It's like listening to the primordial soup from where that whole thing came and it's primative in the best way possible. Just some really good doom metal paired with the most basic and primitive drum machines of the time.

Absolutely adore this album. Broadrick's an interesting character + a VERY busy one, guy always seems to be doing different projects. "Like Rats" reminds me of growing up white-trash on a UK council estate (social housing), it sums it up quite well. Was so into this album as a teen, as an adult still very much so, but it doesn't always take me to a "good place", but the fierceness of it, the biting anger makes a lot of other "heavy" bands seem like absolute lightweights. Justin (main vocal)'s been pretty open about his struggles with mental health, dude's pretty inspirational and it's great to see them back to releasing music. You might well enjoy Jesu - also Justin's project, they're much more on that floaty, spacey, spacious vibe. Worth mentioning, I'm pretty sure that vocal sample at the start of the track "Streetcleaner" is Peter Sutfliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. He was nicknamed The Streetcleaner by the Yorkshire Police Force as the detectives thought he was "taking out the trash" :/ "Tiny Tears" - as in weeping/crying - I like to think of this as the evil flipside to Phil Spector - it's a realy Wall of Sound, completely engulfing - great reaction, certainly hope you're well + you "got" the catharsis of what's happening here is excellent. Such an underrated band + special mention to B.C. Green for his ongoing work as the 2nd half of Godflesh.

Really liking your channel. Enjoyed your review of Rammstein and Sigur Rós. Only started listening to Jónsi. Have you already listened to Rammstein's Sehnsucht? I mostly like non-English songs but get how that's limiting to how much you can offer in terms of reviewing. However, do have English artist recommendations. How do you receive initial recommendations? I see the poll but wondering if you curate the list from comments or put up an initial poll for ideas.

Mosquito Control.. The Red Sea... Celestial... SGNL05... only to then follow their progression into the best and most epic Post-Metal band of all time (imo, but i'm not the only one). Great chance! Another, very dear recommendation would be Killing Joke. THAT is a band that absolutely everybody needs to know, i promise.
