This was the last Korn album with the original lineup (Jonathan Davis, Munky, Head, Fieldy, David Silveria) after this album Head, the guitarist left the band, and after the next, the drummer David left too. Head came Back in 2014 for their album Paradigm Shift and since then hes been a part of the band again. However, David never came back and since their 2010 album Korn III: Remember Who You Are they have Ray Luzier as a drummer.

I noticed that throughout the Korn albums you have reviewed so far, sometimes you point out things that remind you of their debut album. You might be interested to know that the song Alive was written back then when then they were doing their debut album. I’m not sure whether or not you remember the song Need To from their first album, but Alive is sort of like the original version of Need To. There is a demo version of Alive you can listen to on KZbin. So the song Alive was sort of re-worked to become the song Need To. If you look at them like side-by-side and compare them to the demo version of Alive, you can kinda see where certain parts of Alive became Need To. The chorus is most prominent, it’s like the same instrumentation Jonathan is singing over. There’s actually a few videos on KZbin recorded by fans who saw them live when they did a tour for the 20th anniversary of their debut album, where they were performing Need To, and kinda takes you by surprise by swapping out one of the choruses in Need To and sings the Alive chorus instead. For a person like me who loves both of those songs, it’s a really cool surprise.

No it isn't. Alive and Need To are entirely different songs.

@@DeadPixel1105 Need To was made from Alive, which is why the chorus, lyrics aside, is the same. Not to mention the demo version of Alive has a kind of similar structure to Need To and also include the post chorus section in Need To (unlike the version from TALITM). So yes, Alive (the 1993 version) is the demo of Need To. It has changed a lot but there's still lots of similarities.

This is the last one in the lineup for what I would call their classic material. After this one they dealt with lineup changes and experimentations that didn't always pay off and kind of started suffering from an obvious shift in tone due to a lack of direction and loss of their original identity. See You On The Other Side even had the same songwriting team that was writing hits for people like Britney Spears brought on to carry them through the recording process and it just really shows because their songs dropped most of the hip-hop influence and became more formulaic and they were never really the same band after that happened. It's a shame but it is what it is.

I got this record for Christmas last year when I was at peak KoRn-mania (not to say I love them less now) and I loved it to bits. I like that it continues the more heavy rock than metal streak Untouchables started, and it's for sure one of their more energetic albums. I don't know that there's one standout song, if there is it's probably Counting on Me, an unabashed examination of dark feelings in a toxic relationship, and I guess it drags a little bit because it's a bit samey, but the general hate this record seems to get despite the fact that I've never heard of anyone disliking it is unfathomable. The basslines are the most dynamic they've been since Life is Peachy, Right Now is a great opener, Everything I've Known is great, Y'all Want a Single makes me laugh a lot, I used to really love Play Me cos the instrumentals are cool and Nas' flow is really sick but he's saying some not very nice things about gay and trans people, so it's a good thing I don't give a fuck what Nas is talking about. It's also a great exercise album start to finish, which is a rare thing. Unfortunately the next chronological album is maybe my least favourite album by a band whose existence I'm willing to acknowledge, which isn't to say you won't enjoy it Molly, you're always great at picking out the positives.

This album was always one I'd either ignore or really dig at various points. I really dug it when it first came out. I remember my sister got the CD and we wore that one out. I since had to rebuy it, because her copy was both edited and scratched to hell from the giant CD binder we kept it in. I guess over the years it kinda fell off for me and I didn't listen to it much, and then later on I went back to it and I think I appreciate it more now than when it was new. It was an awkward time for Korn. What do you do after the production monster that was Untouchables? Probably what Korn did, if you're smart, instead of trying to outdo it. I think it has one of my favorite productions of any Korn album. Everything is just punchy and thick, without being too compressed. This is the last Korn album for years where I feel like Fieldy's bass is more front and center. His tracks would be more buried in the mix on later albums. The only thing I don't care for about this album was it seemed to be missing a lot of that interesting guitar fx that earlier Korn albums had. Korn's always had great pedal work, and this album is pretty stripped of that.

Regarding the lyrics being repetitive in the song “Y’all Want a Single,” I believe that was the point in making a deliberately repetitive, radio-friendly song that intentionally and ironically also had to be extremely censored and changed: “In an interview with Metal Hammer in November 2003, guitarist James Shaffer said: "We were recording this album before we went to Ozzfest. We had 10 songs written and recorded, but we weren't feeling it would be the whole album. We wanted to add 3 or 4 more songs, so we came back to record them. Then our record company was like 'Hey, we'd really love to have a single' and our management, The Firm said 'We would really like to have a smash hit single, man, can you dig it?'. We were really appalled by that scene. They wanted 'Got the Life' or 'Freak on a Leash', and that shit wasn't flying with us at all! For the first time in our lives we were dissecting our music, and trying to analyze the structure of those songs, trying to figure out what made them huge hits. But Korn never works like that, and while we were all wondering, Jonathan came up with a line: 'Y'all want a single? Say: FUCK THAT' and we wrote Y'All Want a Single as a big 'fuck you' to them. Damn, Jonathan is really good at motivating us this way."[1] - James Shaffer

Fun fact: this album is the album Jonathan Davis likes the least out of their discography. His favourite is Untouchables. Personally I do think this album is a drop in quality from the last album but does have a few hits like Right Now and Did My Time

This record was self-produced as well. The reason being is Untouchables took a lot out of them physically, emotionally and financially. They wanted to get back to their roots from their first two records. I personally think they hit the mark and is a fairly underrated record. They also brought back Alive which was written during their first record. You can find their Neidermeyers Mind Demo on KZbin. Kinda crazy the stark contrast between it and this version. I’m fairly certain parts of that song were added to Need To? I can’t remember exactly. This record wasn’t meant to be a world beater like their self titled or Untouchables I think a lot of people lose sight of that. As some also said this is the last record Brian would be on until The Paradigm Shift.
