It would have been so easy for Slipknot to commit to the path of the scary, hyper-aggressive band in masks, especially after the first two albums, but they took a chance and showed some vulnerability and I respect that.

100% I can totally respect that too, it takes a lot of bravery to change and evolve as a band. I'd say much better to be a band that tries new things and perhaps loses some of its original fans that dislike the new direction as opposed to staying in the same lane musically and just becoming rote.

10:07 you kinda nailed it on the head here, as they've said in interviews that the album was kind of a therapeutic healing of sorts after the chaos and near-breakups of the prior few years, their way of becoming united again. A few other little facts are that Corey was basically drunk the whole recording process (so it's not like it was a very pleasant experience for the band) and also made it a point to not curse to stick it to critics who said that's what he and Slipknot relied on, there were 2 total curse words on the entire album not counting the bonus material so that was their way of 🖕

Used to be my favourite in a big way, it has some of their very best tracks (blister exists, duality, vermilion etc.) and I love the details of making it (Corey doesn't swear on this album cos critics said he relied on profanity ). No doubt a great album as all theirs are, I find there are some points where it drags a little but it's no big deal when you've got the singles and the two great closing tracks. And youre absolitely correct about this being the reckoning after the madness of Iowa. This journey you're taking has really made me reevaluate how much I love Slipknot, All Hope is Gone is one of the first albums I ever remember listening to, I hope you enjoy that one Next! It is oft criticised but I think it's a tighter affair than Vol 3 and has some great singles that stand up to this album and then some. Great work as always Mol 🤘

YESSS!!!! Been going through an odd time and I really needed this review. Vol 3 came out on my 22nd birthday, I remember Duality being played on the radio but the hype wasn't as big as Iowa for some reason. This album was produced by Rick Rubin, who also did all 4 System of a Down albums as well as Slayer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The musicians enjoyed working with Rubin and learned a lot from him but Corey reportedly hated the experience as he felt that the man was barley around. Crazy to think, given that this is Corey's best recorded vocals (IMHO). Vol 3 had Slipknot rise as one of my favorite metal bands, the variety in sounds is amazing and I 100% agree that lyrically it seems it's a response of trying to reckon with the content from Iowa. Keep up the great work Molly!

Hope you're doing okay, glad the video provided some entertainment. You're absolutely right about the sound variety on this album, Vol. 3 definitely takes the top place for experimentation out of the first three albums from Slipknot. How they fuse such melodic moments with their amazing harshness, but then also add on those electronic elements is so cool. It's a blend that just works in a really compelling way, and I'm excited to hear where they're going to take their sound on All Hope Is Gone.

I been waiting on your reaction to this Album! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Since Vermillion is my favorite track on the album as well, here is a fun fact. On Corey Taylor's recent interview at Days of the Dead, he stated that Vermillion on the surface is about a serial killers lust and the stalking and darkness and build up, while Vermillion Pt2 is about the tragedy that that sick fantasy can never be fulfilled. The subliminal part of the song is that it's actually about Corey Taylor's obsession with not being able to make life exactly how he wants it to be. So it's basically like how we sit and imagine the way we would like our life to be but we can't really make that a reality. Part 2 is about Corey finally letting go of that and being able to embrace life for what it is. It's really cool and means a lot to me because I've been there before. When this album came out I was actively trying to beat that game, which took months because I'm not very good at videogames but the story fascinated me so I had to finish it. The entire time I was listening to this album on repeat, a burnt/bootleg copy that I got from a kid at school who had the real thing. We knew that we shouldn't be doing that but we didn't care. We were genuine fans but we were also 6th graders with no money. I still replay both every few years to bring me back to a simpler time. True nostalgia.

This album got me into Slipknot even though I had heard the first two prior to this one. I liked this one; obviously you have the "flow factor" - very important for a good album. I gravitate more toward albums that do that; that have a purpose, make a statement; as opposed to "here are 12 tracks thrown together and that's the record." This album also is one of several that just takes me back to a certain time. A very happy time in my life. A summer I won't forget. Glad you got to hear this one!

@@mollyesanborn 100% agree they do play around with the sound of this album it sounds like more of an experimental like a demo that is somewhat completed but very experimental like they're trying to figure out a way to blend the years that this album came out mixed with the stuff that they were Uber famous for from Iowa's album that people loved and still be radio friendly more than usual for the mainstream audience

Of all the people that I watch do there reaction videos you are with out a doubt even if I agree or disagree the best at doing it. You go in listen all the way and explain in detail what you here then as to why it works or doesn’t. Just wanted you to know I’m sure many of us obviously enjoy your channel. Keep it up I hope to watch many more plus gives me a chance to listen again and enjoy it Along with someone who hasn’t 👍🏻😎🔥 I love the first two albums like every one else and I know a lot of ppl don’t like or enjoy much of this but I think it’s just as great but to me the journey on each album is different and is tbatvwhat makes an artist great. Not kill any of the inspiration to create art? They aren’t just done heavy metal band. To me them and of course Pantera were everything to me. 💥🤡💥

Wow, thank you!! I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kind words. Glad that you're really digging the videos. And yeah, I agree on how I think it's great that Slipknot is taking the risk to change up their sound across their albums. I like that they're not sticking with one sound, it shows a lot of growth as a band in my opinion.

slipknot was influnced by mr.bungle in their earlier work. you can tell with some of their changes in paces from loud to quiet. corey taylor said in a interview that he saw a faith no more concert on mtv live when he was a little teenager and that sparked his interest in wanting to be stage performer and wanting to join into a metal band. he said the way mike patton sung and performed so crazy and wacky is what got him interested and the very bold and strange music. ironcally a lot of mr.bungle fans hate slipknot and i am of the few that dont. i love slipknot music. its very fun and interesting. its not as creative of other bands ive heard but its still holds alot of ground.

During my time of listening to slipknot all of the albums have been interchanging as my favourite, on my first listen all hope is gone was my favourite. At the moment either self titled, vol 3 or vol 5 is my favourite. All of their albums are perfection and i love their consistency. I'd have to say that Opium of the People is by far one of my favourite slipknot songs! Overall i'd have to sat that Gehenna on All Hope Is Gone is my favourite slipknot song

18 years of this album. Just damn… self titled and vol3 were my firsts. My cousin showed me wait and bleed and duality on a mixed CD with dragonforce gwar and Korn. That weekend I went to Boarders and bought the 2 Slipknot cd’s they had. I’ve been a Maggot ever since.

I enjoyed Slipnot in the early 2000s, but I never took them seriously until this album.. While I'm not a huge fan of their later works, I think this is an amazing album, arguably their best work.

This album is the first time I really fully listen to Slipknot album. I think it's a great introduction for their first time listener. Because I experienced it myself, I was linkin park kind of guy on that time so Iowa album feel too much for me, but after I feels I've got comfortable and really enjoyed this album it's made me search for them more.

It is a great intro album to listeners who have never heard Slipknot before. I feel like there is something for everyone on Vol. 3 more than their first two. Its got the harshness, but also the melodic and the ambient too. Great fusion of sounds!

I htink what you mean by militaristic is referring to the practical application of percussion which is commonly employed in things like marching bands and such which can be associated with military. That's just typically where you might expect to land profession-wise, if you are a percussionist. But I think the more inline term would be uniform and approaching. In schools and stuff where this typically starts out before it reaches a formal profession, is where it's often times a part of a collective performance that is referred to universally just "band" or band class. And I think that's usually to cheer on and have this set tone and rhythm to bring along a kind of motivation in people. Helps muster up grit in people when it's really strict beat being performed. Sometimes that's for schools that are competing in something. In the case of slipknot, I heard this one guy say they took the sound of slipknot to a more commercially available sound or something like that. But i didn't like that being the borderline only take away that he had from the album. It's obviously an album that's meant to be more influential and less purely selfish than preceding albums. I think that kind of approach carried over into all hope is gone, as well. especially the way that I heard blister exists, and pulse of the maggots, going into gematria in All hope is gone. Actually I think in iowa there was also heretic anthem. And the kind of influential nature and tone they would set was already kind of touched in some of their songs, prior to subliminal verses where the name in itself is literally on the nose about it intending to communicate/connect directly with audience. But I love that people refer to it as sounding more melodic. I would often listen to sepultura before I listened to slipknot and one of the weird things I saw as a tag on youtube for sepultura was something called groove metal. And while I don't avidly look into subgenres and their meanings behind the different approach styles in metal, I thought that melodies, tones, and rhythms being set with unique themes and traits would always sound a little bit more interesting. However, I think the fact that themes llike this may have come from nu metal in general, the coolest hting i learned about the metal genre was that they didn't always have these down tuned guitars. and that does a fucking lot to incorporate as heavy of a sound as possible. The neat thing that slipknot has always had since the very beginning was percussion assisting/additional to lead drums. which also helps to add to heavy tone being set in place. not just having down tuned guitars plus a bassist. But they also have assisting vocals on top of lead vocals. and majority of them are able to perform gutterals so I think that covers a wide gamut in general. Versatile is definitely a term that makes sense to refer to them as. Butt yeah, because metal is not just rock and roll, heavy metal and metal(.) is kind of interchangable cause you would expect metal to be heavier than rock. or ig industrial and electronic is soem other terms you could use but generally speaking i expect metal to sound heavy and robust, and also to include gutterals where you often don't expect to hear gutterals in rock. atleast, that's what I feel like would make for a purposeful dilleniation at the surface level. I dont know anything else about it.
