My mom used to be an extreme couponer. She didn't hoard as badly as the people on the show (she basically hoarded only what can fit on a shelf+the fridge), but some of the stories she told me were amazing; like bulk-buying boxes of Oreos for -50 cents a pop to basically get other normal groceries for free. I remember when she came to visit me once, saw my then subscription to New York Times (and the backissues I kept), and spend like an entire day doing nothing but clipping coupons from those. The stores eventually changed their policies ofc, so she evolved from extreme couponing to extreme gardening/DIY. Basically, she and my dad rented land from a local universary agricultural department and (combined with gardens in her back yard) ended up growing most of her food, and learned stuff like making her own tofu and jam and bean sauce so she almost never had to spend money on food. I think frugal people are a blessing because of her. It does become an issue once you overhoard, but I like to think there are a bunch of lesser-known normal frugal ladies like my mom out there who coupon responsibly and are just really, really good at saving money. People just don't know about them since they don't make for exciting television.

Him giving her the silent treatment for 5 days is emotional abuse, I can't believe that he's saying that SHE'S emotionally abusing him. Also him getting so angry about his gf sleeping is ridiculous. He should be communicating and trying to understand why he has such a strong emotional reaction to something so small.
@Original_Tenshi_Chan2 жыл бұрын
That's the exact reason _why_ he accused her of emotionally abusing him; He's projecting. He's also gaslighting. She was awake and answering him, so obviously she wasn't asleep. "I just heard you breathing loudly! that proves you're lying and actually asleep!" then calling her a liar when she said she wasn't breathing loudly nor sleeping, like he genuinely thinks that if he keeps repeating his lie, she'll start to question her reality. And it worked. Because here she is, asking if she's an asshole for rejecting his gaslighting and abuse. I don't even know how he can justify her cancelling his access as "emotional abuse". Obviously once you break up, your ex no longer gets access to your accounts, and he's insane to think otherwise. He chose to ghost here, and she chose to acknowledge the break up, he played his stupid game, and now he gets to claim his stupid prize.

@@lauraanderson8785 Agreed! Sometimes I just want to shake the OPs and tell them to smell the marinara flags! Though, I kind of disagree on the mental gymnastics part. Hear me out. They genuinely believe in the insanity they spew because of their mental gymnastics. But abusers know they are lying. They know they are manipulating and gas lighting. They also know it isn't an ok thing to do (thus why they hide their deeds from others). So, are they really doing mental gymnastics while spewing their nonsense? They aren't convinced nor convincing themselves, they're just trying to convince their victims.

My ex and I used to be extreme couponers before we got divorced (not because of the couponing). We had a spare bedroom in our house that we started using as the storeroom for our 'haul'. we had racks of shelves in there and everything was very organized. We had a hard rule that if it didn't fit in the room, we didn't keep it. We had both (separately) lived in extreme poverty at one point in our lives and were very happy with stockpiling. This was the late 90s, early 2000s and was actually before the tv show. We did watch the show when it started and even checked many websites for better deals and tips. We were really great at it and probably had over $30,000 in food and supplies in our storeroom at the time. We would get extra stuff that we, ourselves, didn't actually use, but it was for family, friends, neighbors and even local food banks (we had both used them when we were both poor and we felt the need to give back). I remember that our best haul was about $1500 of food and stuff on 1 trip and they actually owed us money after being rang up. I think it was like $15 or such. We knew all the managers for each of the stores we went to and worked with them to make the large orders for the things we were getting more than 10 of those items. They were nearly all very helpful. (one store manager resented the hell out of us, but couldn't actually stop us after I talked to cooperate about it). Right after the show started getting popular, almost all the stores changed their policies and coupon companies changed how their coupons worked, so it pretty much killed off the 'extreme' movement that was gaining momentum. It became much harder for us to keep up to the level we were used to doing, but we were still able to save at least 50% or so each trip. After we got divorced, I didn't have the time to keep up with that amount of couponing, but I still do some, and I still keep a small stockpile (which has helped a ton during Covid lockdowns). But once I get more time on my hands, I'll put more into it again. While I do have a desire to have a stockpile, it's not an obsession, just a practical desire to have supplies in case I run into a problem and won't have a way to buy more (injury, can't work, lockdowns, ect), so that's why I don't have my whole house full, like some hoarder. Though there is comfort knowing that it's there should something happen, then I won't be as affected short term.

I used to coupon like that. It is a very addicting. It takes a lot of time and dedication and you do a get high when you see the receipt and how much money you save.

I remember my second driving lesson. I was in a city, it was already dark and raining. Already too much for me but I held on. On one crossing I waited for the lights to turn green and as soon as they did the car behind me started honking, even thought I started driving as soon as it was green. Messed me up a little. And the car behind could see the marker, that this was a car for driving lessons and probably used for such a lesson at the moment. After I got home I started crying from the build up stress that day

Younger sister used to do couponing when big newspaper Saturdays was a thing. Once the pandemic came along, getting coupons became harder, so she stopped. She had large stock piles of all sorts of things that all her brothers and sister in laws raided on a weekly bases. From free shampoo and toothpaste to Razors and cereal. Sharing among her siblings saved us all well into 1500 dollars yearly. Op should have done this with his friends from the start and it would have never gotten as bad as it did.

My mom has the same issue with a hoarding pantry, though she doesn't coupon for it. She stopped extreme couponing after we complained that saving on toothpaste was not changing the grocery budget

I love the idea of cuponing for charity! That was a smart move and it will put her OCCD (Obsessive Compulsive Couponing Dissorder) to use for the greater good. It is compulsive and growing with food insecurity does lead to hoarding. I live in a 3rd world country but went to abroad for a few years. I noticed upon returning that the lack of resources makes everyone hoard if given the chance, even if they do not really need it. So good on OP.

As a genuinely horrible driver (I do my best but it took until I was 27 to get my license just because I was so scared), the wholesome story at the end was really touching.

Extreme couponing for charity is a wonderful idea! You get to use the rush to do a good thing. I'm almost tempted to learn how to coupon to do it myself.

My mom and older sister were big into couponing for awhile (it was never my thing I dont have the patience for it) and OMG the rooms they had of extra stuff. Most people that do extreme couponing will usually either donate the excess items, gift them to friends/family, or resell them on marketplace, yardsales, or the fleamarket at a booth. they will all have a room/rooms dedicated to their hauls and my mom and sis did as well. The amount of money they saved was AMAZING. My mom had a 1k bill and with coupons only paid $6. And this sort of savings as the norm, not the exception. With most coupons going digital now though, finding the sales and coupon stacking is alot more difficult so you have to be really dedicated to do what OPs gf is doing. Its possible, but takes time and dedication to be an extreme couponer these days.

Companies have seriously tried to crack down on couponers since that show. Now they have clear limits printed on them and the computers won't let you use them past those limits (if they've been updated since like 2010).

Usually in my country, coupons have a maximum of items that will be covered, 6 mostly. It's because we don't have giant stores like Walmart, so it's to avoid shortages.

I grew up in poverty and still have food issues, not as bad as I used to but it's taken almost a decade to even get to where I am now. I highly recommend Op get his fiance into some therapy. Its not a "cure" but it certainly helps.

yeah everyone saying "limit her couponing" and shit are missing the point. The couponing is the symptom of a problem, not the actual problem.

It's a rush you get when you get so many items for next to nothing cents. I could see the food insecurities connect that now that she's an adult she probably sees how much her family could've saved and have enough money for other basic needs.

I remember the days of the super-couponers. It was literally a full-time job and these people would leave the grocery store with 4 grocery carts with mountains of goods and over $200 in cash FROM the store! Their garages looked like a preppers dream! B/c of this many of the stores started initiating coupon restrictions (not being able to double up, etc) and it's not as lucrative as it used to be. Still, I bet if there's a will there's a way!

I think it's awesome how reddit sometimes helps give solutions you wouldn't think of, I've seen people on extreme couponing shows often donate to charities and other good causes, but it didn't cross my mind how it could be the solution on story 1. I'm glad to read it helped both of them ♡

From the age of 2 until I was 21, we lived in real poverty because my father resisted paying anything for my mum, brother and I. When I started work I was able to fund our home properly. I found out that the pantry was overflowing. My mum told me that whatever food items she bought she had to buy three of each. This, I'm certain was a mental reaction to being able to buy food without worrying. I really think that subconsciously she felt that this security would fail so she wanted to ensure we could eat for weeks.

I know someone that does this. There’s Facebook groups where they share their “haul” and tell each other about where to find coupons. I’m all for saving money but the effort level is just way too for me. I’d rather have the time for other things.

Seeing people bring in 3 or 4 baskets full of groceries then divide them so each member within the group pays separately for maximum savings thanks to coupons being restricted to a single order, or seeing an entire group do the same but pass each other the same coupon for maximum savings, or even witnessing orders of upwards $400 or more dollars go down to around the $80 dollar mark thanks to maximum couponing, I can safely say it is a thing at least where I work at

When someone has sleep apnea they can often micro-sleep, or fall asleep and not actually know they're sleeping. I know this because that was me before I started sleeping with a C-PAP. I had a boyfriend at the time that also would get annoyed with me because I would nod off all the time, especially when watching movies or being a passenger in a car.

My boyfriend and I used to constantly argue about buying in bulk, I don't get into the extreme part but but I pay attention to store coupons and unit prices of items, until March of 2020 when I had purchased the ultra mega pack of tp a month previously. I was able to keep our grocery bill around $60 a week while we were unemployed for a bit. It did take a while for me to get out of that mentally

I did 10 years on a grocery store cash. I loved it when couponers came to my cash, because i was excited to help them save money. My philosophy was, "I;ve been a customer much longer than I was a cashier and treated people how I wish to be treated. Mind you, there were those customers I'd tell, " please continue to shop at walmart"...I worked at a completely different company.
