Self defense doesn't really apply here. All three of them, especially Iida, sought out Stain and put themselves in a situation where they had to fight. Iida was told NOT to chase after Stain by Manual. He chased him anyway. Midoriya was told to stay on the train by Gran Torino. He left anyway. The students actions may have saved lives and been just. That doesn't mean they weren't also breaking the law as established in the show.

Also, consider this: the law has to be applied equally to all people. If you say it's okay for one ordinary citizen to use their quirk to attack a threat, you have to say it's okay for all ordinary citizens to do so. Trouble is, not everyone has the same quirk. Some quirks have no nonlethal setting. Some people haven't trained with their quirks well enough to avoid doing serious harm to themselves or others. The whole reason heroes need to be educated and certified is to avoid these kind of situations. Legally condoning the actions of Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki means legally condoning vigilantism, which opens the door to way more harm than good.

Oh they absolutely did what was best for the situation and saving as many lives as they could. I'm glad they did it to. The fact still remains that they could be legally persecuted for using their quirks without permission and without a license. It's definitely not a perfectly tailored law for the situation that the kids found themselves in. However I can see why the law was implemented. It could be pretty dangerous if everyone was using their quirks whenever they wanted however they wanted.

There are people who have powers that can potentially cause a lot of damage. Do you just say oops when some well meaning guy accidentally bring down an entire building because he wants to help? It's not all that important in the long run, but my takeaway from the mention of Stain's parents was always they likely just happened to die coincidentally, that 10-year period is a decent amount of time for any random stuff to happen. But, as a result that probably meant Stain had nobody left in his life to talk him off the ledge, to prevent him becoming who he did.

Self defense my arse, Iida was quite literally hunting Stain down, and Midoriya went off to fight villains despite being told to stay on the train. The only one that makes sense is Todoroki because he got a message from his friend saying _"HELP!"_

Todoroki was the only rational and lawful acting one there, he was actively patrolling in that area with his father, got an out of character message from a friend with a set of local coordinates, informed the pro heroes and only went himself to investigate because the pro heroes were occupied by something else. Think of the whole support items ordeal as like selling munition or weapon modifications, you would have to go through the legal channels to obtain them and file paperwork for having that for your job, but say if you are a criminal and you want like kevlar and armor pierce rounds you would have to go into the underground, In this case the criminals would be selling gear to criminals that make them more dangerous rather then to the heroes.

Deku and Todoroki were defending themselves and protecting a comrade, but Iida is in a different boat. He went actively looking for Stain, so the police's comments are correct in that. But this show is more than just being a hero. It's about media perception and laws as well. The media plays a big part in My Hero, so I think you guys should be a bit more open to certain things instead of striking it down quickly or at least saying they have a point. The rules are there for a reason it's to protect the public as well as the heros as well. You think about it what if things didn't go down the way they did, then Iida, Deku, and Shoto all could have been hurt or killed. Or innocent civilians also could have been killed as well, creating a problem in that could cause civilians to start suing heros.

That's why I love this show. It takes the time to explore the logistics of having a world full of people with superhuman abilities. From small things like the giant doors in school (for accessibility) or the teacher talking in the background about construction regulations changing after quirks started appearing, to large things like quirk registrations and laws regarding who's allowed to use their quirk, when and for what purpose.

I think the laws surrounding quirk use is meant to reflect how it's illegal to own a gun in Japan except for the police, I think. Officially registered heroes are like a kind of police or branch of government, but civilians cannot harm another person with their quirk. And that can't be judged on a case by case basis, or else what's stopping anyone from trying to justify it? Stain was hurting others with his quirk, believing he was doing what was right for the world. Breaking the law is a crime regardless of one's reasons for doing so. The only other solution would be to take away all human rights of criminals so that actions against them aren't counted as crimes. But then there's still the grey area of if someone was killed before their suspected crime could even be confirmed.

You can leave a gun at home, safely locked away, before leaving the house. Or you have the option of not owning a gun at all. Where are these options with quirks? As soon as you are in a situation, where you happen to have a weapon with you and your only chance of realitically defending yourself against an attacker is to use it, this is absolutely covered by any sensible form of self-defense-law. The worst that could happen, is you getting charged for the laws you broke by having the weapon in this situation in the first place. *If* you broke any laws, that is. Again, with quirks, you don´t really have the choice of bringing them with you or not.

Tokoyqmi looks like a bird, and has a sentient shadow. The police chief looks like a dog, but has the ability to create straw men and knock them over. "So it's okay to break the law when it goes your way" is a hilariously broad statement. A more fitting assessment of the situation is "so it's okay to break the law when following the law would kill an unknown number of innocent people " Yes, iida broke the law, but it ended better than it begun. Stain is in custody, so he cant kill anyone else. Native is alive, try telling him you wish they had followed the law and he be dead.

There is a very important reason for why the Quirk restricting laws are so strict, for a long time after the quirks first showed up the world basically went into the dark ages with the magnitude of the disaster it was, and it didn't really stop until relatively recently. The quirk repression is something that gets brought up a lot throughout the series in the background, so I think the writers wants the laws to seek unfair.
