Patrick, I wrote on a few of your old videos, because I couldn’t find you, and was concerned . I hear you talking about oil painting. How strange, because after 30+ years of watercolors, (we had similar experiences about learning back then) I’ve now also started oil painting. I’m thrilled to see you doing this, and so far it seems like we’re doing the same technique. Love it. Tallahassee Florida.

Beautiful! It's more than a sketch. Your composition and color theory is obvious and you are already more accomplished than many painters in galleries.

Hi Patrick. I loved your watercolour videos and now oils? Wonderful. I am trying oils as well for the first time and I find them very challenging. I must learn to paint “loosely” - you seem to have mastered it already. It would be beneficial for me to see a close up of your original photo so that I might try to “paint along” and learn. I look forward to many more of your oil painting videos. Thank you so much!!

It was more than ok. It was amazing. Great job. I love the way you paint with such free strokes. I paint too tight, I need to loosen up.Thank you for sharing.🤗 From America.

Good to see you so energised Patrick and really enjoyable to watch your progress; so much chimes with my own experience of realising the futility of trying to copy and not enjoy (and ending up with mud that has to be scrapped back!!). Look forward to seeing more, especially your views on using water based oils.

Thanks Paul. I’m pleased you share my sentiments. I just like to take in the scene get it portions as good as possible then put the image away. I find painting outside so much easier.

Great to have you back, looking well and enthused. Interested in your opinion on acrylics....wouldn’t novice oil painters want to start with acrylics - cheaper, and faster drying times and less preparation.?

Fantastic video! I’ve been debating dabbling in the oils. This definitely makes me want too. I’m working on my drawing to get better at perspective and values at the moment but I really enjoyed watching you paint this and in all reality I would hang this in a wall. Lovely!!

This has been very enjoyable, one because you are enjoying and two because this seems to be what you were missing in watercolors. I used to watch Steve Adkinson’s fine art videos on You Tube but he is mainly an oil painter. He has done a few watercolors too. So what you are doing isnt all that unusual but it refreshes the mind. I may work more on gouache this winter for a change. Hope you really enjoy your break from work and it sounds like we may benefit from it too. Take care and stay well.

Thanks Essie , I feel like my painting has come alive again due to the oils . I’m looking forward to getting the watercolours out again soon but I’ll be painting boldly while keeping it simple and fresh. Gouache sounds like a great idea a bit of a halfway house between watercolours and oils. I hope you enjoy it 😀

Great video and painting. I started with watercolor about 8 years ago but within the last couple years have decided to try oils, acrylics and pastel. I like to sometimes try painting the same scene in all 4 mediums. I always learn so much! Thanks for your videos!

Thanks Patrick. I learned a lot in this video ... the tip about using separate brushes for each colour in order to keep the painting clean and vibrant is one that I will write down and put into practice. You may consider yourself a beginner but even so, you remain a consummate teacher as you share your process and keep it real. Question: What do you do with your used paper towel or rags when you're done. I've read so much about the danger of spontaneous combustion that I'm almost afraid to start in case I burn the house down! I've purchased Cobra water-soluble oils and a small bottle of the particular linseed oil, brushes, a couple of pads of paper for oil paints (for practice) and a few other things so I'm all set. I would love to see this painted in watercolour since I think it would really expand learning in both mediums (media?). Loved this and thanks again and paint to your heart's content during your two weeks off! P.S. Are you using synthetic brushes or real bristle ones? Do you prefer one over the other?

I enjoyed this video very much! Love the colors. It’s better than the photo in my opinion. I love a more impressionist or sketchy painting style. I look forward to your watercolor version of this scene. It would be great at some point to provide a brief look at your studio equipments and the lights, etc you use indoors. Do you have natural light? Thank you so much for sharing these videos of your art process.

Thanks Shannon I like the impressionist style to so much easier on the eye. I will certainly do an equipment video may well include some of it in my Q&A Video later in the week. 😀

@@PatrickLeyGreaves that would be great! Thanks so much for the quick response. I’m happy you are back. I don’t plan to do oil painting, because most of my supplies are geared to watercolor, but who knows.... after I retire (next year) I might want to try it. I’ll be cheering you on. It was nice to see you enjoying it! I have quite a few questions! How long did it take for the painting to dry? Do you premix your colors like a lot of oil painting artists do? Or do you mix as you go in a watercolorist way? Did it take long for you to get used to holding the brush so far up the handle? And painting on a stand instead of a tilted surface? Thanks for sharing your explorations!

Hi Zoe thanks for your questions if it’s ok with you I will save them for the upcoming Q&A video later in the week. I can give a more full explanation that way.

Hi Patrick Congratulations on a great painting! Could you tell me what is the drying time like using water based oils? I'm using Acrylics and find the drying time super quick which makes blending colours abit more challenging. I'm just wondering if the same problem is there with water based oils. Looking fwd to more paintings from you. Cheers

There's a video by Bill Inman where he discusses panels canvas and primers. He mentions some downsides to wood and hardboard, that it leaks a chemical into the air, i forget its name.... I'm not sure if what he says is being overly paranoid though, because in my research manufacturers seem think most of that chemical will have finished leaking by the time it reaches the consumer.
@PatrickLeyGreaves4 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I’m not a fan of Canvas I prefer the smoother feel of gesso board. I think everyone has a view on what’s right and what’s wrong I’m sure the boards would be pretty safe as there generally made for diy house projects . I appreciate you taking the time to pass on what you know .
