For me, i call my old name my birth name as opposed to my dead name. It still is a trigger, but I’ve learned to associate it more with something that used to apply to me, but just doesn’t anymore. When I was born, I was named that name. Now I’m not. When I was born, I was also 8 pounds. Not anymore!

I take the same approach, and that's how I'm still able to have some of the music awards I won a little bit ago hanging on my wall in my birth name, because I recognize that I once identified with it, but that this is the new me.

My name is Samuel and cis people who don't know I'm trans love calling me Samantha as a joke because its funny for some reason? @@samb8509 i was actually on your channel because i was trying to educate myself on trans issues. It is a shame that an honest response is taken so negatively by you. I thought you were posting to educate and open a discussion but apparently you are just posting for adulation. Not everyone who is trans passes. Aydian Dowling says he is a heterosexual man but his voice comes off as gay. I am sure it was the same with you at the beginning of your transition. That is all i was trying to say. names are so important! When I made my outing in front of my parents I have already choosen a name for me. After a year I finally got to talk to my parents more about my transition and because I'll get T next year, we talked about my name. They both didn't like my new name and because their opinion is very important for me, i listened to them. I have a little brother and my mom always wanted to name him robin. They never named him like this even if both, my mom and my dad loved the name. So my mom asked me to choose this name and I'm so happy and honored of that. I also love this name and the fact that my parents literally 'gave it to me' is such a wonderful feeling! It's a big step in the acceptance of my parents. It is very hard for them but with this step I can really see that they are trying to accept me as their son and not daughter anymore. Thanks for the video ty!

I was named after my uncle, and his name is Michael Aaron, but he goes by Aaron. My name was just his name but feminized and switched, so it was Erin Nicole (it would've been Michelle but my sister was already named that). I decided it would be easier to change it to Aaron Michael and go by Michael so I wouldn't have to change it much, and since my nickname was Nikki all they would have to do is call me Mickey instead. Easy peasy. I will say both my name's are super common and I kinda want to choose a cooler name (I'm not out to family, I live in Arkansas and my family is very conservative) but I like the name Michael a lot, and I think it fits me well. I like that you gave other people's perspectives, it was an amazing video!

I'm unable to call my birth name my dead name. Because I have not changed my name yet on papers, so everyday at my college I have to write down my birth name and it's a huge trigger but I'm in a part of my life where I'm unable to change my name due to the lack of money. I try hard to not let it effect me or effect my schooling but it does become difficult, along with still hearing my dad call me by my birth name. I am aware that my name is completely different from my birth name but it is a name that I've had people call me by since middle school. Since I've always hated my birth name, it's never felt right to me. Id rather be called my name Aleksander/Aleks than what was given to me.

First, as I watched a more recent video, I could not quite understand some of your references, as a man. A quick search to older posts cleared up my befuddled state. Second, as a gay man I find a familiarity to your point about being triggered...by an old name. It's just that, in my case, the triggers are all that went before my recent coming out. That older 'me' was closeted and traumatized in youth. I have often wondered if changing my name would be of help. In my case, I decided that the help was best applied internally to correct earlier learned dysfunctional dictates. So I am still Steve. Nice to meet you, Ty! Subscribed.

The intro is really good. I really liked your editing. I know no one cares, but for my name, I kind of just took it from a KZbinr that used to be kinda big back in the day. I didn't know that it was gender neutral at first. I firmly decided to keep it because it was six characters because my mom wanted it to match the six characters of my brother's name. My 'deadname' (it's only in English, by the way) is rarely said because my parents never speak English at home. I don't feel weird when people call me my Chinese name because it's very gender neutral, so I'm going to keep it. The funny thing is, even though I chose the name Jordan, all my friends mostly call me 'Tobi' because I told them that was my nickname during the first year of secondary school. I rarely got called Jordan back then. Nowadays, since I'm studying in England, I get called Jordan left and right and it's kind of a strange experience.

My mum was great about names when I came out. She was calling me by my new name immediately. But, multiples times pre coming out I had brought up wanting to change my name, I'd never felt comfortable with my birth name, and every time she'd end up crying, horribly distraught 'what's wrong with your name, it's a beautiful name, I *gave* you that name! If you change it you're throwing it in our faces you might as well leave the family if you don't want to even have your own name!' ... I guess she feels terrible about acting like that now that she knows why I had to change it. So, she was right on board with that. But I know she still hurt about it in some way, a sense of loss or grief, as silly as that sounds it obviously meant a lot and was hard for her, though she accepted it and made sure I did what was best for me. I didn't want to feel guilt over pursuing my own happiness, it was something I had to do, god it's tricky sometimes y'know? Anyway, when my name change came through, I was about 4 months on T, and I went to get my license changed over, new photo, name, and gender marker all at once. It'd all be correct now. I was so happy. My mum was happy... For me. But still feeling sad on some level, working it through for herself. So when the clerk grabbed my change of details form and asked me to give her my old license for disposal, I quickly decided that I had 'unfortunately lost it somehow recently', meaning they could issue me a new one without having to destroy the old one. Then I drove across town and gave it to my mum. The very last thing that would ever identify or record the person who looked like that, holding that name. Just a little keepsake for her. I think it's nice, she can have a tangible piece of the past and be a physical part of the present & future, seeing that you never lose the person that was, but rather get to see the person that is, and experience the reality of them being the same person, nothing lost at all. Anyway, that's how I lied to the state government and retained possession of a false document to give my mum a fake ID coz she's sentimental and I thought it was sweet 😂

Bryn Jackson that is honestly really sweet of you to do that and to be so understanding that it can be hard for a parent to just let go of what used to be. its like a child moving out, the old way of life is gone, but that doesn't mean this new way is bad. its just new, and new is good and exciting. and im so glad your mom warmed up so well to a new name once she knew why it was so needed! i wish both of you so much luck! 💞 also i used to talk about changing my name with my mom all the time, and she would get all "why, your name is so beautiful, why would you change it" and i'd be like "yeah its pretty but i want to change it" and i actually used to hate it so much. i do love it now bc its unique and a tie to my family's roots and history (its a french name and my family has a french canadian past AND i can tell people i was named after a duck, who wouldnt want that- my mom knew a duck with my name), but sometimes i do still want to change it for reasons. my mom got so used to me wanting to change my name that she opened up and was like "yknow... honestly i want to change my name. i've never liked that my mom and i share a name" so we started going by different names for a while every week! it was nice, and it was bonding. im still on the fence about changing my name, sometimes i feel it would be healthiest for me, but theres also that huge sentimentality i have (im a crybaby for the past lol). anyway that was more than i wanted to or needed to share sorry x

My birth name is not that triggering for me. So little so that I mostly kept it, just flipped it to the more masculine alternative. Dominique -> Dominic. Easier for me, familiar for my family. And I don't necessarily hate my name to begin with. Sucks that I'm gonna have to pay $400 in my state just to change a few letters 😂😂 ah well!

You're a very talented artist and all around smart and funny dude and I think we get more of a taste of that in videos like these than work-out videos (by that I don't mean that those videos are worse than this one - just very different). Although I've only watched a few of those so I could be wrong. Either way, great video!

I find it interesting that most of the people you talked to didn't change their names if they were gender neutral. I am afab and my name was actually traditionally masculine already but I changed it anyway because I always associated it with people thinking I was a girl. I always hated my name and I ended up choosing a name I had used for myself when I was very little because nothing else fit.

I love the format and editing in this video! I changed my name completely but only kept the first letter. My birth name is extremely feminine. It has few variations but it’s becoming more popular. I’ll here a mom in the store yell my birth name looking or addressing her daughter and I’ll have a moment of panic. Sometimes it sends me into a spiral that affects me for hours.

Your name can be whatever you want it to be. You don't even need to change it legally to start using it in your personal life, even at work you can tell people to call you something besides your legal name, even though on documents and stuff it would still say your legal name
