Probably not because I think my parents' idea of me would differ greatly from my own understanding of me. Moreover, I think I agree with John that I'd like to meet someone on my own. That way if it goes to shit 😅, I won't have anyone to blame but myself or well the relationship itself! But on more serious note, there's potential for more people getting involved when it's set up through parents' and their friends. It adds expectations, pressure and so if it doesn't end well or even if it doesn't go anywhere beyond a first meet, it has the potential of hurting more people and souring parents' friendships too. Perhaps it's just how I'm wired, but I like to minimise damage wherever possible or at least account for it before it happens. 🙈

I can totally relate to this video. As a Chinese female in her late 20s I'm constantly questioned by my family and relatives towards why I'm not in a relationship or when I'm getting married. This was especially evident after seeing all my younger cousins getting married. Although they offered to set me up with someone I agree with John, I would much rather meet someone on my own. Also don't know if it's just my family or if anyone can also relate. My family mindset is still stuck on girls should focus on starting a family and not focus too much on their career. I'm currently trying to communicate the importance of my career to my family in hopes to change their mindset on this situation.

Not everyone wants a career when their biological clock is ticking. I’m in no mood to start a job and wait 7 years to build a career and get married at the age of 40 years old. I’m 33 years old for gods sake. Some guys don’t even get married at 33. Some get married earlier. I wanted to get married by the age of 27 in 2017. A career isn’t a priority at the EXPENSE of marriage. You can have BOTH at the same time. There are many who marry ambitious women. The beta procrastinators who don’t and want to lock you in the house, can F off. I SHOULD have been married years ago. And I WOULD have been had a scorned bitter insincere psychopath not set out to ruin my life and my chances at finding love. My last date was in 2017. It’s February 2024 now. He has contacted every guy who liked me or wanted to marry me, not to meet me or marry me. That’s hardly organic. It’s not from the universe. That’s malicious, dirty, insincere and complete interference in my timing and what could’ve happened for me. It’s a calibrated effort to hold me back and BLOCK love, marriage and children from my life. It never should have happened and it could easily have been AVOIDED! It’s not normal behaviour. No one behaves this way. No guy has ever behaved this way. I WANT to be a wife and mother. It’s WHAT I want. I’m dying to play these roles. He got rejected. An alpha would’ve moved on. Alphas don’t hold others back. They make moves in their own lives.

there’s an unconscious “pressure” in trying to make that thing/ “relationship” work when you’re being set up to date someone. I personally think it’s better to meet someone on your own. At your own pace and time.
@SoKelly
@SoKelly 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer this, but I’m also not against my parents suggesting someone if they know I’d like to be in a relationship, doesn’t mean I have to be with that person, but I do value their opinion. Also with the “pressure” thing I just tell them if I’m not in to the person, I’m sure it also depends on how your parents listen and consider your feelings too tho.

As an American living in China, this is so relatable! Whenever I talk to my Chinese guy friends, all they talk about is how they are pressured from their families to get married and have children. But in China, it's common for the guy to give a gift to the girl's family. Usually a car and a house. So there's a lot of financial pressure on them as well. Thankfully, my American parents are relaxed and just want me to be happy. I think that's also because a lot of people both I and my family know are not happy in marriages.

The caught in 4K part had me kekein! 😂😆 It depends on who my mom sets me up with because her idea of what I want vs. what I want are on two different spectrums. I’ve been focused on work and school so much that YEARS have gone by and I still have nobody. I know I’m still young and I have a few years to worry about a relationship, I do need to at least consider it before my job consumes my body and soul even more.

My parents tried setting me up once. You could say they had strong opinions towards a particular person whom they encouraged me to get to know better. I was not of the same mindset, so didn't open any doors for it to become a possibility, putting a strain on my relationship with my parents. But as years went by, the person they liked changed and became someone they would not recommend for me to be with. So I find it interesting, because I believe that a lot of Asian parents want what's best for their children but it comes in forms of having good faith, having a successful career or coming from an educational background. I believe many parents see stability in those traits, but just because a person possesses such qualities does not equate to them having compatibility with you, which I think is way more important and something that your parents may not envision too well compared to your close friends. I don't think it's bad to see what your parents value in a partner, but to be set up by them also introduces a new conversation of their expectations and how they view you.

Interesting perspectives! I do see some changes in Asia countries in recent years, especially in fast paced cities like Shanghai, Singapore, Seoul. Increasingly more are choosing to stay single or become single as they realized they r simply happier that way than being attached or married. The parents still hope their kids get married of course and carry the family line 😍 At the end of the day, I guess there isn't one way to live our lives , we have a right to seek our own happiness and fulfilment.

I’ve been with my boyfriend for 9 years and I can happily say I love him more each day. I met him naturally and we both fell in love naturally. I personally don’t believe set ups would’ve worked for me unless the person had the same mindset, ambition, and enthusiasm. Ideally we want someone with the “whole” package, but at the end of the day you start to realize that what makes you love that person are the sacrifices they make for you, that they’re always there for you, and how they love you for who you are. It’s not about how much money you make or how you look like, because these things can change. Just being able to connect to another person that just gets you and loves you for you is incredible. He’s my best friend and my soul mate. My favorite person in the world. I hope you two are able to find that sort of love one day! Don’t go actively looking for it. It will come to you, honestly. Remember to focus on yourself, but remember you can grow old with someone and both be working on yourself still except now you have the extra loving support. 💕

My dad has definitely set me up on a blind date previously- however it’s been hard because I’ve been in different countries these couple of years. I think the culture clash I feel living in a predominantly white country definitely impacts how I view dating as well. Ideally, it would follow much of what you guys talk about what Koreans traditionally do though I’m not big on anniversaries but I’ve felt like I had to adapt to casual dating here. It’s definitely difficult and causes for culture clashes when both parties have wildly different ideas of the lines drawn and I can’t wait to here what John’s relationship was like! I guess I would be more accepting if my friends would do that setting up a date thing. But I think my parents are very understanding that my main priority for now is my career, and I'm still in my 20s. So I guess I'm still young. ;) More videos like this please because I just so love listening to the two of you and you keep me company while I'm working.

Your Parents are cool! They know you better than you do and may just pick your soulmate. At least let them try to help you and if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out.

My friend has been set up a few times for marriage. Recently he said yes to a girl that lives in the UK and she will come over to the USA to live with him. He is still young at 23 years old but I am proud of him.

My parents are pretty traditional, but never have they set me up on a date. They just give me advices and who I should surround myself around with (educated, good influence, Godfearing, etc). Majority of my friends are married and have families of their own. I think everyone has their own time and we shouldn't feel pressured or discouraged by anything. But I understand why some would feel pressured in a way, most especially for women who want to have kids (timing to them is very important). I still haven't found him and/or he hasn't found me. And if I ever do end up being single my whole life, I will still be happy. :) I just believe there is a reason for everything and in God's time everything will fall in the right place. :)

LOL I wouldn't want to date someone that my family tried to set me up with. Idk, it's just weird 😂 But I also don't get pressure from anyone to date (I'm 26 and Caribbean-American), which is great because right now I just want to date myself. But if I come across a guy I want to date then sure 😊Also! Welcome back Jason!

Sounds like my parents! 😂I hate setups as well. I prefer it to happen naturally and casually on my own, but it seems to be getting harder these days with all the dating apps and how superficial people can be. Doesn’t help that I’m an introvert as well😝Thankfully I’m happily single! Just wish my parents were happy for me! Ugh. They’ll never understand. They assume single is being lonely and sad. Not even! 🤦🏻‍♀️

As a parents we don’t want you to be lonely in your life and at same time we also want you to be happy. Marriage is like roller coaster sometimes is happy sometimes is say and something you are so angry but at the end you are not alone… 👍 take care and keep safe 🙏

When I lived in rural Georgia (USA) it was not uncommon for people to get married right after high school graduation or during their time in uni lol So there is definitely a city v. countryside dynamic in the US

I agree! It's cool to be single! In my country, there is no pressure to be married at a certain age.

My parents don’t pressure me into getting married, but if they did I would not agree to date someone that they want to set me up with.😅Instead, they pray about it (which I find it to be the purest/genuine form of love). & I’m glad they do because it’s something I can incorporate in the future with my own family. I’m almost 30 and not once have they asked me if I’m talking to someone. I come from a Mexican culture and it’s quite similar to Asian culture in terms of family and values. Although, the situation may possibly be different with guys. Haven’t asked my brother if he has been pressured by my parents?🤔 As far as I know I’ve never heard my parents asked him why he hasn’t found someone to marry.

But irony they alway bring the story of having grandkids any time we’re been a foolish and acting childish. But same time, it a reminder that their time to be with us in future at any time are running short😔😔😔😭😭😭

🤗, I definitely want to make sure my child meets a nice partner. Even though I didn’t let my parents choose my husband, if my dad had not liked him it would have been a no. Let your parents be “involved” you never know who they may point you to.

I just had to share. So I have a big family and when you said your older bro just got married it was less of a pressure on you. Then I thought about my whole family and I’m the only single one 🤣 Everyone in my family is in a relationship so my parents haven’t pressured me at all. I’m dead 😵 😂
