Honestly, this is both a stupid Windows bug, a stupid Windows design decision and a bug/design fault on the NIC. Because the BIOS/UEFI decides what hardware features are present and if it sets Wake-On-LAN off, especially on a NIC directly on the motherboard, that should be the end of the discussion. Windows shouldn't even have a Wake-On-LAN option for that device and even if it does, the device shouldn't obey it because BIOS/UEFI says no. And of course, a Windows design fault because why the fuck did they think it was a good idea to wake the PC on any LAN activity? We made Wake-On-LAN magic packets for a goddamned reason.

Years ago, I even made a simple Windows service that would put the PC back to sleep after a minute in case it woke up itself in the middle of the night. In recent years, just turning WoL, power to USB, hardware timers (Windows Update is the biggest offender when it comes to those) and all that crap off made it stop. But I'm certain there are still some motherboards that won't let you configure the PC that way. Same problem here a few years back. I found that some software can change driver power management in regard to wake on LAN within Windows. My experience revolved around a Gigabyte X570 Pro Wi-Fi and the bundled cFosSpeed software. After installing said software, system refused to shut down. Finally figured out the same thing you just did. Uninstalled the software and changed settings in device manager fixed the problem. Another noted problem at least on the AM4 platform and Gigabyte is there are two separate areas in BIOS setup for wake on LAN. The main as shown in video and another sub setting in the LAN settings menu. If you turn off the sub setting in BIOS it will not stay turned off. I believe this has been broken in the BIOS as I went from F11 to current F38 on the same system and the issue persist to this day. Does not keep the system awake, just appears to be bad BIOS coding here.

As for the checkmark not showing up and Phil was your witness. This has been a known "glitch" since Windows 95. The setting will be present in the Windows Registry but not always show in Device Manager drivers settings. Has happened to NIC's, GPU's, sound cards, and other add-on cards. Not strictly for add-on cards either as it can happen to integrated devices as well. The most common instances I've found over the many years I've been doing IT is after driver updates. The driver updates, has a feature enabled or disabled, updates the registry but does NOT reflect the same settings in device manager. This very problem is how I learned how to navigate, edit, and utilize Windows Registry as it was quicker and easier in the end.

HP printers send out these multicast packets constantly. It's basically screaming "hey, I'm here. Somebody notice me. Send me print jobs." Hope you can find the option to turn it off... If you haven't... try and disabling the USB C port on your GPU (if it has on obviously and you're not using it) that port can also confuse windows :p

@@Mr3ppozzthank you for this! If this vid doesn’t help I shall take a look. I’ve got an old 2080ti so pretty sure it doesn’t have a usb c port on it… could be wrong as I’m not at my pc until later! :)

I work in a print shop. Can confirm: all computer printers are demonically possessed, even the large industrial ones. (HP are the worst of the worst tho)

I've had this problem, only way I fixed it was a complete format & windows reinstall.

I've run into similar problems in the past it isn't too strange. Printer software in general is also hot garbage. Lots of software though likes reverting windows settings you change(and windows itself really loves doing this). Often you end up needing to run scripts or do registry edits etc to constantly force a setting to stay the way you want it.

One thing to be noted is that the main UEFI Wake on LAN setting you did would not apply to the 10G NIC since its not a chipset device. It would have its own menu with its own options similar to a PCI-E add-in card.

Do you have the note about the IT industry from 2 years ago? "Never use an HP printer again!" Ever since HP started forcing users to use their INK service via firmware, HP printers have been the worst garbage you can buy in IT. And I say that as a former HP employee. An HP firmware update destroyed my entire system 1 1/2 years ago and killed the printer, even though the automatic updates were turned off in the printer. I now only use Canon refillable printer and have no more problems.

OMG been having the same problem, I too just had to instal HP scan to pc software. THANKYOU for making this video. My PC is in my bedroom, it has been cycling because of going to sleep settings.

You forgot to turn off "magic packet" and to turn off "wake on lan" directly from the network card's settings via control panel, rather than Windows 11's "setting" panel. The "settings" version is a soft switch, meaning it's turned off but not for essential Windows services. So updates and other Windows services can still forcibly wake or turn on your computer. "Magic packet' can also do this, especially if you have any internal servers like Xserve for Linux in Windows running in the background.

Thanks Jay, you just taught me how to turn off the ethernet port lights off when I turn off my PC. I have my computer in my bedroom, so having that orange light on at night was so annoying to me

Even if you don't have an HP device, this video might still apply to you in the future. Here's why: Just this past summer 2024, "HP Smart" (dumb) suite for printers just decided to bundle itself with Windows 11 updates and self-installed on many computers anyway. I know because my clients (over 50 incidents) had HP printer drivers replace their other print drivers despite not having a SINGLE HP device on their premises. The HP Smart suite overwrote the recommended drivers on Windows, overwriting Lexmark, Brother, Canon, etc. Of course, that caused obvious headaches for the actual drivers that were meant to be there. Thankfully this mess-up has resolved itself a couple months later. Thanks HP. (and any other brand that doesn't learn from their mistake)

I have a very old PC (pre Intel i3 series) with this exact problem, except it only applies to power save modes; powering off completely works fine. Thanks for this tip - I will check this tomorrow! 👍

As someone who works at an MSP, I'm not surprised an HP printer/HP software caused this. Everything made by HP has been absolute garbage for YEARS. I also found out a while ago that some HP printers don't understand any network that isn't a standard Class C /24 range - if it's wider, any device that isn't in that same class C group it would be a part of, it will REFUSE to connect to the PC. The PC can see it, and the HP printer won't answer back. Total trash hardware AND software.

Similar problems but with sleep, and I haven't figured it out yet. PC1: main rig, kept in sleep as I use it to stream to Steamdeck, and wake up to run a backup automatically once in awhile and it takes an age to boot (AM5). I got it to sleep mostly, but sometimes it just half sleeps- leaves fans and lights running but otherwise seems asleep. PC2: used as an Emby server. I got it to sleep fine, where it would wake as soon as I opened Emby on something, and would sleep after a time inactive- no problems. Then with no changes it started sleep/instant wake cycling on it's own, now it just won't sleep. No printers or anything, and when I check what's keeping awake/last wake cause it usually gives me nothing (but sometimes Emby on the server, of course). Computers and I have a love/hate relationship.

learning about wake on lan from this video just fixed the sane issue that I've had for 2 years oh my god I've been having to turn off my PSU or just my monitors this whole time and I never knew about that setting

Thank you so much. I have had this issue for over a year since it was built. The Magic Packet trick finally fixed it!!
